Game Overview
I’m not too sure about you, but when it comes to witchcraft and messing with black magic, I’d be one of those people you’ll find hiding behind the sofa that wants nothing to do with it. So, you can imagine how I felt when I saw Coven Rising from Pragmatic Play hit my desk today.
Okay, now that initial shock is over, let’s get down to business and find out what this release is all about. Unsurprisingly there’s a more dark theme to this slot, which also features high variance, special symbols, free spins and a maximum win of 5,000x. Are you intrigued to learn more? Great, let’s dig in with our full review.
Theme & Design
Coven Rising really does have it all when it comes to the theme. For starters, a rather haunting soundtrack welcomes you once the game hits your screen, and if that isn’t enough, you’ll find the slot presented to you in the middle of a forest (yes, think Blair Witch Project) with the main antagonists of this title surrounding the game reels, with their wands at the ready to cast potentially evil spells.
If this darker approach is something you’ve enjoyed, then you’ll be pleased to know we have a horror slots section here at Demoslot for you to explore, featuring top titles such as Nolimit City’s Blood Shadow 2, another excellent high-variance option in this genre.

Coven Rising Gameplay & Features
Pragmatic Play has opted for a rather strange setup on Coven Rising, with the game played on a 1-4-7-6-7-6-7-4-1 grid of symbols. Players are awarded wins when 5 or more matching symbols connect anywhere within the playfield, with winning symbols then flipping into new ones for more chances to win. All of the game symbols on each spin begin at payout level 1, but these can be increased up to a max of level 5.
Betting options on Coven Rising are fairly standard for a Pragmatic Play release, with stakes starting at a minimum of €0.20 a spin up to a maximum of €100. The game additionally comes with variable RTP models for operators to use, which are 96.42%, 95.49% and 94.49%.
Witch Modifiers
The main aspect of the game is the witch modifiers that appear in the centre of the game grid. When they activate, they all have individual abilities, which are as follows:
- Green Witch: When activated, it will collect all coin symbols in view.
- Red Witch: Will upgrade a random symbol to its next payout level.
- Yellow Witch: Will transform up to 5 blank symbols into paying symbols
- Blue Witch: Turns the middle of the grid into a wild.
Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatter symbols in the base game will trigger the bonus round, awarding 12, 16, 20 or 24 free spins, respectively. During the round all WITCH symbols and modifiers associated with them are available and can hit randomly.
Bonus Buy
If applicable in your jurisdiction, the following feature buy and enhanced betting options are available:
- Ante Bet: The free spins are 7 times more likely to trigger – Costs 3x the bet
- Standard Free Spin: Costs 100x the bet
- Super Free Spins: Cost 200x the bet
Pros
- A darker-themed slot, which some players will prefer
- Up to 4 modifiers can trigger
- The max RTP model is above the industry average
Cons
- Perhaps a bit complex for novice players
- Can feel frustrating with so many symbols on show and you still don't hit a win
- Feature buy options are restricted in some geos
Final Thoughts
Pragmatic Play do sometimes dabble in slots with a darker theme, and whilst they should be congratulated for that in Coven Rising, I still feel the gameplay is a bit too much, and even experienced slot players may find themselves flicking this one off pretty quickly, as the game just feels too busy.
