Snowborn Games is a Stockholm-based casino games developer launched in 2017. The game studio specialises exclusively in online slot machines, and while their current portfolio is relatively small, they release new games quite frequently, most of which are designed with an impressive level of quality.

The studio was founded by a number of highly experienced iGaming professionals, too, including ex-NetEnt staff, and they have a strong presence in Asia, largely due to Asian game distributor QTech Games acquiring a majority stake in the business back in 2018.

If you’re new to the studio or just interested in learning more, our Snowborn Games review will inform you about the company history, game features and mechanics and also includes a portfolio of demo slots you can try yourself for free.

History & Company Background

Snowborn Games began in 2017 in Sweden with headquarters in Stockholm and a satellite office in Helsinki. TheThe founders, including Björn Zethraeus and Magnus Palmstierna Eckhell, both brought decades of experience from their previous work at companies like NetEnt.tably, they both had extensive experience with developing math models, something that Snowborn was keen to implement into its games in unique ways.

In its early years Snowborn split its focus between developing an in-house platform and creating its first games. By 2020 it was operating purely as a game studio, powered by its own HTML5/JS framework for fast-loading, mobile-friendly slot games. The company adopts a “quality over quantity” strategy, which is one of the main reasons their titles take a considerable amount of time to be released.

Snowborn Games Product Portfolio

Snowborn’s product range focuses entirely on video slots. There are no table games or instant win games from them yet, and this means the only games you will find from them are, indeed, slots. They offer slots with a wide variety of themes, including Vikings, Pirates, Leprechauns, and virtually everything in between. Below, we’ll take a look at five of their most popular releases to date.

Online Slot Games

Portals

Portals was Snowborn’s debut slot, and it’s a sci-fi themed game set in outer space! It looks pretty appealing, and if you choose to give it a try for yourself, you’ll quickly get an idea of the kind of graphics that the software provider is capable of producing!

Portals is designed around a five-reel, three-row layout, and you’ll find 20 fixed paylines in play at all times. The graphics are neon and futuristic, and you’ll see swirling portal symbols and cosmic wild symbols on the reels: it looks cool, there’s no denying that!

Now, a special “Warp Wild” symbol can trigger a free spin of the reels, and this tends to land quite a lot, so if you’re the type of player who enjoys frequent base game action, this already should be a good enough reason to give it a try! The main bonus round, however, is a free spins feature, and here, you get to choose between a variety of different free spins rounds, each with varying win multipliers, or, if you pick the other side, sticky wilds.

The Vault

This was Snowborn’s second major release, and it was developed as a part of the studio’s Microgaming deal. The game’s designed around a bank-heist theme, and it’s designed around a five-reel, three-row layout, with 20 fixed paylines in play at all times.

Visually, it’s definitely an impressive-looking slot, and the artwork is really detailed, not something we always see from a studio, especially a new one at that. The gameplay revolves around collecting special symbols, bank cards, or keys during the base game. Once you collect enough of them, the main bonus round triggers, and you’ll then see the bank’s protective lasers deactivating as you attempt to break into the vault to win big!

The bonus round then leads to a free spins feature, during which multipliers and extra wild symbols can be added onto the reels. It’s a highly volatile game, and for the studio’s second release, it’s a solid effort, in our opinion!

Cat Clans 2: Mad Cats

Cat Clans 2: Mad Cats is a sequel to Snowborn’s first Cat Clans slot, and while much of the theme remains the same, Cat Clans 2: Mad Cats has far more action, higher volatility, and lots more to get excited about! If you are not familiar with the theme, prepare yourself, as it is quite unusual! The backdrop, for example, is a desert road, and here, you’ll see cats (wearing goggles and carrying bombs) in… hijacked cars!

Cat Clans 2: Mad Cats is designed around a five-reel, three-row layout, and you’ll find a familiar 20 fixed paylines in play at all times. The game boasts a bang-on-average RTP of 96%, and there’s a lot of bonus action to look forward to!

First, there’s Mad Respins. When these re-spins are triggered, mystery box symbols land on the reels, and they all then reveal either wild symbols or, if you’re lucky, cash prizes, which are credited directly to your balance as a cash win.

The game’s main free spins bonus is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view, and during this feature, wild cat symbols randomly appear in the reels, becoming wild in the process. You can also land special mystery boxes, which, during the free spins bonus, are worth larger amounts than in the base!

Cats of the Caribbean

Fourth on our list is Cats of the Caribbean, another five-reel, three-row slot with 20 fixed paylines. In this game, Snowborn Games has managed to combine… pirates with cats… and while it’s a pretty odd concept, this medium variance game works surprisingly well. During the base game, the pirate cat acts as a wild, making it easier for you to form wins, and you can trigger a standard free spins bonus round by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view.

The main feature, however, is the CatPot Progressive. During the game, collecting special coin symbols fills a meter, and when you fill it completely, you have a shot of winning the progressive jackpot! This is one of the provider’s only games to feature a jackpot, so it’s a decent little feature!

Pile ‘Em Up: Frosty Sweets

A spin-off of Snowborn’s earlier hit Pile ’Em Up, Pile ‘Em Up: Frosty Sweets is a retro arcade-themed slot mixed with a winter twist. Yes, it’s a seasonal game, and no, we wouldn’t normally list them in top five lists, but we feel Pile ‘Em Up: Frosty Sweets deserves a special mention, as it’s clearly had a huge amount of time and effort gone into making it.

Like the original, the gameplay focuses on collecting coins to earn increasingly high multipliers, and this is achieved through the studio’s patented 1Up Multiplier mechanic. In terms of structure, Pile ‘Em Up: Frosty Sweets is designed around a six-reel, four-row layout, and you’ll find 25 fixed paylines in play at all times. Once you start playing, each coin symbol you collect adds to a bank located at the bottom of the screen. Once banked, it awards a multiplier boost of 5x for each set collected, and when you trigger the bonus round, the current multiplier that you’ve built up transfers over to the free spins.

Jackpot Slots

Snowborn doesn’t produce its own standalone progressive jackpot slot series, but several of its games feature big-jackpot-style elements. As we saw above, Cats of the Caribbean has a “Catpot” jackpot that’s tied to a coin collection mechanic, but it’s not a true progressive jackpot in the same way that Mega Moolah or Greedy Goblins offer.

It’s slightly odd that the game developer doesn’t offer progressive jackpots, in our opinion. Given that they’re a Games Global partner, they could, if they wanted (we presume), access the Mega Moolah jackpot network, as we’ve seen from other Microgaming-linked studios, so the fact they haven’t means they’re either uninterested or are too new and are choosing to focus on other things right now.

Table Games, Bingo & Other Casino Games

Currently, Snowborn Games has chosen to focus exclusively on video slots. This means you won’t find any casino table games, Crash, or instant win titles in their game catalogue, and, as of now, we see no reason why this would change.

While it’s always good to see a provider offering a robust selection of games, there are cases where it’s simply best for a provider to stick to doing what they do and know best, and in Snowborn’s case, that means they focus, now, entirely on developing video slots.

Game Mechanics, How They Work & Unique Features

This section of our Snowborn Game review sees us look in more detail at the in-game mechanics and features the studio has used in its releases so far, along with an explanation of how each one works.

Paylines

Paylines are the most popular type of mechanic you’ll find in online slots, and these are designated patterns across the reels where matching symbols must land to create a winning combination. In older slots (think the type of game you’d find in old-school Vegas casinos), many games had just one payline running across the centre reel.

Modern online slots, however, often use multiple paylines, typically a minimum of ten. These lines can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or even zigzag in shape! To form a win, you (usually) need to land three or more matching symbols on a payline from left to right. Some online slots allow you to choose how many paylines to play, too, while others use a fixed payline mechanic.

Popular Payline Games From Snowborn Games:

  • Stellar Gold
  • Cash Flip Devil’s Coin
  • The Vault

Ways to Win

Ways-to-win is another very popular mechanic found in many online slots today, and in these games, you don’t need to worry about where symbols land, provided you land matching ones on adjacent reels from left to right. Popular formats include 243, 1,024, or even 4,096 ways to win. Instead of using specific line patterns, ways-to-win games typically award wins for matching symbols on adjacent reels, regardless of their actual position on those reels. For example, in a 243-ways-to-win slot, as long as matching symbols appear on consecutive reels from left to right, you form a win! Another difference in ways-to-win games is that your total bet isn’t calculated by coins per line; one bet covers all ways.

Popular Ways to Win Games From Snowborn Games:

  • Pharaoh’s Riches
  • Tippy’s Golden Pot
  • Masters of Valhalla

Bonus Buy

Snowborn Games are a studio that has opted to stick with popular trending iGaming features, which has seen them add a bonus buy option to many of their releases. Whilst the price to buy instant access to the bonus round can vary, typically, you can expect to pay around 100x the current bet.

Unique Features

1Up

Snowborn Games is responsible for developing the unique 1Up mechanic, which typically involves a multiplier that increases as special “1Up” symbols land on the reels. In most games, the multiplier begins at 1x, and each time a 1Up symbol lands, it increases this multiplier, up to a maximum of between 10x and 50x depending on the game.

The multiplier that you manage to build then applies to various in-game features. This can include wins formed in the base game; it can carry through to the free spins bonus round, or, in some games, it can also apply to cash collection mechanics.

It’s quite a cool little mechanic, and we really like the games where you have the option to play your free spins bonus with the multiplier you’ve built or ‘store’ the multiplier to increase it further for future free spins bonuses!

Commitment to Player Safety & Fairness

Licensing & Regulation

If you look at a lot of other casino review websites, you will find that a lot of them say that Snowborn Games holds a couple of gambling licences, including ones from the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC).

However, we didn’t see any evidence of licensing information on Snowborn’s website, which is something we’d expect to see, so we decided to search the regulator’s websites manually. On the Malta Gaming Authority’s license finder, for example, there is no entry for Snowborn Games, and the same goes for the UK Gambling Commission.

With all that being said, Snowborn Games is a subsidiary of Games Global (previously Microgaming), and this means that they don’t actually need a license to offer their games to players. Instead, they “piggyback” on Games Global’s licence. This allows Snowborn Games to operate and distribute their content through Games Global’s established and compliant network, which, in turn, allows their games to be offered in regulated markets without needing to hold separate individual licenses. This is common for smaller studios, especially those operating as subsidiaries of massive studios like Games Global, so it’s nothing to worry about.

Fair Play & Security

Regrettably, Snowborn’s website lacks sufficient information and fails to disclose which testing house certifies their games. However, given their partnership with Games Global, we have no concerns about the fairness of their titles, and it’s likely they use a testing house like eCOGRA (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) (given that it’s owned by Games Global), BMM (BMM Testlabs), or iTech Labs.

Partnerships & Collaborations

Snowborn Games may primarily be known for its partnership with Games Global, but that’s not the only collaboration they’ve formed. In fact, their most pivotal came in 2018, when they partnered with QTech Games. QTech now distributes Snowborn slots across Asia and some other markets, and this allowed Snowborn to see near-instant exposure in markets like India and the Philippines.

It wasn’t until 2020, in fact, that the software provider struck a deal with Microgaming (now Games Global), launching The Vault exclusively on the Microgaming Quickfire network. Today Snowborn is listed among Games Global’s network of studios, so all of its titles are available through Games Global’s aggregator platform.

In addition to QTech and Games Global, Snowborn has also partnered with other aggregator platforms, including SoftGamings, and this makes their games available through a single API integration in other markets, too.

Corporate Social Responsibility

While we were unable to find any direct information about Snowborn Games’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and whether they even run them or not, we should point out that they’re a studio operating under the Games Global (formerly Microgaming) umbrella, and this means they contribute, indirectly at least, to a number of CSR initiatives.

Games Global has shown a robust CSR framework throughout its life, and they do a lot to support local charities on the Isle of Man. They are also a major sponsor of many responsible gambling charities and they also run days where staff are paid to volunteer in areas like education, environmental awareness, and social welfare.

So, Snowborn Games doesn’t appear to run any of their own CSR programmes; their parent company (or, at least, their main partner) does.

Final Summary

Snowborn Games has, pretty quickly, managed to establish itself as one of the most creative and forward-thinking iGaming studios out there today. Thanks to their extremely high-quality games, their partnerships with Games Global and QTech, and their ability to innovate, as seen in their 1Up mechanic, they’ve managed to achieve quite a lot in a relatively short time span.

Sure, the game developer may not hold their own individual iGaming licenses, but this isn’t really something that’s needed, as they “piggyback” on those from Games Global. What’s more, their games are all fair and certified, ensuring that when you play any of their titles, you’ll be enjoying a slot that’s truly random.

Yes, they’ve chosen to focus, for now, exclusively on video slots, and they don’t offer any of their own progressive jackpot titles, but their portfolio is growing, and we’re excited to see what they’ll do in the future!
