History & Company Background
The Light & Wonder story is a fascinating journey, and it all begins with Autotote, an Australian company founded in 1917 by George Julius. Autonote specialised in developing totalisator systems for racetrack betting, and in the mid-20th century, they expanded into the US market, which is where they’d go on to become primarily based.
In 1973, Scientific Games was co-founded by Daniel Bower and John Koza. They began by revolutionising the lottery industry by introducing the first secure instant lottery ticket in 1974. This innovation helped to make the company one of the best-known and most prominent gaming technology brands, and over the following decades, Scientific Games grew a lot, primarily through acquisitions. For example, they acquired Bally Technologies in 2014 and WMS Industries in 2013, and both of these brands themselves were hugely significant players in the industry.
Bally Technologies, for instance, has roots dating back to 1932. It was a pioneer in slot machine development, responsible for the “Ballyhoo” pinball machine and the Money Honey, one of the first electromechanical slots in the world!
These acquisitions, along with others like Shuffle Master, DEQ Systems, and NYX Gaming Group, transformed Scientific Games into a HUGE gambling player. In 2022, the company rebranded as Light & Wonder, and that’s how its games are branded today!

Highest RTP Light & Wonder Slots
The theme and in-game mechanics of a slot might be what draws you towards playing it, but the return to player percentage is another key point you should always take into consideration before spinning on any game for real money. More commonly known as the RTP, this value represents the amount the game will pay you back over a sustained period of play, often calculated over millions or even billions of spins.
Even though it’s easy to dismiss RTP due to how it is calculated, we still recommend you pick games with the highest returns to give you the best value out of your deposits. Since various game providers release casino games and slots under the Light & Wonder brand, the highest RTPs can be challenging to find, so we have listed those with the best offerings in an easy-to-view and helpful table below.
| Slot Name | RTP |
|---|---|
| 1. Black Knight | 97.75% |
| 2. Perfect Potions Megaways | 96.52% |
| 3. Spartacus Megaways | 96.32% |
| 4. Invaders Megaways | 96.30% |
| 5. Action Bank Safe Cracker | 96.28% |
| 6. Rainbow Riches Locomotion | 96.25% |
| 7. Secrets of Memnon | 96.19% |
| 8. Raging Rhino Megaways | 96.18% |
| 9. Monster Catch | 96.17% |
| 10. Montezuma Megaways | 96.17% |
Light & Wonder Product Portfolio
Light & Wonder is famed for its innovative collection of online slot games, offering a diverse range of themes, mechanics, and bonus features. From classic fruit slots to immersive, story-driven games, Light & Wonder offers something for pretty much every player. In this section, we’ll explore what style of games the provider has in its armoury, starting with five of their most popular titles, some developed in-house (by SG Digital) and some by their partner/subsidiary studios.
Online Slot Games
Bar-X Infinity Reels
Bar-X Infinity Reels is a popular slot that uses ReelPlay’s iconic Infinity Reels mechanic. The game’s played on an initial 3×3 layout, but every time a win is formed by matching three or more consecutive matching Bar, X, or 7 symbols, a new reel is added to the right-hand side of the screen.
If you manage to land three or more of the free spins symbols, either on the initial 3×3 layout or as the reels expand, you’ll trigger the game’s core free spins bonus round. During the free spins, multipliers come into play, as is the case with most Infinity Reels games, and it’s also possible to re-trigger additional spins!
Rambo
Rambo was developed by Atlantic Digital under the Light & Wonder brand, which is based on the famous action movie franchise. This five-reel, three-row slot uses 20 fixed paylines and incorporates a unique Stacked Mystery Symbols feature. During the base game, these stacked symbols can land anywhere in view, and when they do, they can nudge up or down to reveal full stacks of potential wins!
Another feature in the gameplay is the Rambo Reveal mechanic, which is triggered by landing six or more coin symbols anywhere in view. This is your classic Hold & Win Jackpot-style bonus, where you can also hit Collector symbols.
Finally, there’s a free spins bonus round, triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols anywhere in view. This awards you with up to 20 free spins, and during the bonus round, any Mystery Symbols that land lock in place, making it much easier for you to land full screens, or almost full screens!
Secrets of Memnon
Secrets of Memnon is an SG Digital video slot that takes you on a journey to ancient Egypt! It’s designed around a familiar-looking five-reel, three-row layout, and there are 20 fixed paylines in play at all times. The game’s playable on a wide variety of stake sizes, and there’s quite a lot of bonus action!
Firstly, there are expanding wilds, and when they land, they cover the whole reel they landed on! If any Jewel Cash Prizes land in view, and an expanding wild does, too, the value of the prizes is collected and credited to your balance as real cash.g
Landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view triggers the game’s main free spins bonus round, which awards you eight free spins. During this feature, if you land any expanding wilds, they become persistent, locking in place for the duration of the feature, and, surprisingly, it’s also possible to re-trigger more spins!
Finally, the game also includes Light & Wonder’s Premium Play option. This allows you to increase your base game stake in return for a higher chance of triggering the bonus round. Playing with Premium Play activated also slightly increases the slot’s RTP.
Black Knight Evolution
Black Knight Evolution is another slot in the Black Knight series, and this game is played initially on a five-reel, three-row layout with 243 ways to win. However, during the base game (or bonus round), the reels can randomly expand; when they do, they can reach as big as 8 symbols high! This, of course, changes the number of ways to win, and it’s possible to enjoy up to 32,768!
As is often the case in most video slots, the core appeal is the free spins bonus round, and this is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Doing so awards a minimum of eight free spins, and during the free spins, your job is to try to land extra scatter symbols. Doing so expands the reels, and during the feature, the expanded reels stay expanded!
If you manage to expand all five reels fully, you’ll trigger the Super Spins Bonus, too, and here, all of the game’s low-value symbols are removed from the reels! Like most Black Knight slots, there is a gamble feature where you can gamble your winnings to try and enter the free spins bonus.
Stargate Megaways
Stargate Megaways, the last of the five games we’re looking at here, was one of the first Megaways games from SG Digital, and it, of course, uses the iconic Megaways engine created by Big Time Gaming (BTG). The slot uses a six-reel layout, and it’s based on the original Stargate movie. The game’s Megaways setup offers between 324 and 117,649 ways to win on each spin, and visually, it looks great, in our opinion.
When you begin playing Stargate Megaways, you will notice that it includes a nine-segmented trail to the left of the Stargate. Winning cascades advance the trail, triggering modifiers at segment 5 and a bonus game at segments 7-9. These modifiers include Random Wilds, Expanding Reels, Wild Reels, Mystery Symbols, and Regenerate.
If you manage to trigger the bonus round, you’ll be awarded a number of free spins, and you then get to select doors to win additional starting spins and multipliers! It’s a great game, with a default RTP of 96%, and the maximum win potential is a whopping 25,000x!
Jackpot Slots
Light & Wonder and some of their partner/subsidiary studios offer a range of standalone and linked progressive jackpots. While they don’t tend to offer the same levels of win potential found in progressive jackpots from providers like Playtech and Microgaming, they can still be worth a substantial amount!
Games like 88 Fortunes and Dancing Drums, for example, feature the Fu Bat Jackpot system, where players collect gold symbols to unlock one of four progressive jackpots. You’ll also find the Hot Hot Jackpots game series containing the ACTION SPINS Wheel Feature.
Light & Wonder has also implemented cross-platform progressive jackpots, like Super Cagnotte, which, uniquely, connects land-based and online games! This integration allows players to participate in the same jackpot pool, regardless of where they’re playing!
Light & Wonder also operates Operator Wide Area Progressive (OWAP) jackpots on cruise ships, which link progressive jackpots between different ships at sea, quite a unique little concept, if you ask us!
Table Games, Bingo & Other Casino Games
Light & Wonder offers a comprehensive suite of table games, bingo, and other casino games, as you’d expect from a provider of their size! Their table game portfolio includes a diverse range of popular casino classics, such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and poker.
The exact features of these casino table games can vary a bit depending on who makes them (Light & Wonder themselves or one of their partner/subsidiary studios). However, most of their casino table games include multi-hand options, detailed game history, and, in cases like roulette, numerous variations, like European roulette, American roulette, and French roulette.
Light & Wonder also offers a good selection of bingo games, most of which come equipped with customisable rooms, live chat functionality, and, sometimes, progressive jackpots! Their bingo games are also available on their social platforms.

Game Mechanics, How They Work & Unique Features
With a rich history and hundreds of games in its portfolio, Light & Wonder has used various in-game mechanics over the years. Throughout the next section, we will explore what you can expect to find within their titles and how each of these gaming engines works.
Paylines
Paylines are the most common mechanic found in online slots, and these games use virtual lines to determine when winning combinations are formed. Traditionally, these were horizontal lines across the reels, but modern slots feature diverse patterns: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and zigzag.
In payline-based slots, wins are formed when you land a specific sequence of matching symbols on an active payline, usually from left to right. Some slots have a fixed number of paylines, while others allow you to choose how many to play with. Today, however, it’s quite unusual to be able to select the number of active paylines.
Popular Payline Games From Light & Wonder:
- Secrets of Memnon
- Rambo
- Quick Hit Platinum
- Rainbow Riches
Ways to Win
Ways-to-win slots eliminate fixed paylines altogether. Instead, a win is awarded for landing matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of their position on the reels! The exact number of ways to win is calculated by multiplying the number of symbols on each reel.
For example, a 5-reel slot with 3 symbols on each reel offers 243 ways to win, while a 5-reel slot with four symbols on each row offers 1024 ways to win.
Popular Way to Win Games From Light & Wonder:
- Black Knight Evolution
- Bar-X Infinity Reels
- Sam on the Beach
Cluster Pays
Cluster pays move away from traditional paylines. Instead of lining up symbols on predetermined lines, wins are formed by groups or “clusters” of matching symbols adjacent to each other, horizontally or vertically, and, more rarely, diagonally.
In cluster pays games, you need to land a minimum number of “clustered” symbols, usually five, but can sometimes be as many as eight. These cluster pays mechanics are typically found in grid slots, and many of them use a cascading reels feature, too, so winning clusters disappear from the reels.
Popular Cluster Pays Games From Light & Wonder:
- Cluster Temple
Megaways
Megaways is one of the most recognisable and popular mechanics found in online slots, and it was developed in the late 2010s by Big Time Gaming (BTG). Due to its popularity, BTG started to license the technology to other game developers, and Light & Wonder, along with many of their subsidiary studios, received licenses to use the mechanic.
In Megaways games, the number of symbols that appear on each reel changes. Most Megaways slots have six reels, and the number of symbols that can land on each reel is usually between two and seven. This, naturally, changes the number of ways to win per spin, with most Megaways slots offering as many as 117,649 ways to win!
Popular Megaways Games From Light & Wonder:
- Medusa Megaways
- Stargate Megaways
- Rainbow Riches Megaways
Bonus Buys
Light & Wonder and its partner studios tend to have a good mix of bonus and non-bonus buy slots in their gaming catalogue. In the titles where it is present, it’s possible to gain access to the main bonus via the feature buy option, which can range, on average, from 50x the bet up to 100x the bet.
Unique Features from Light & Wonder
Dual Play Feature
The Dual Play feature is found in certain Light & Wonder slots, like MegaJackpots Siberian Storm. It’s an innovative and unique way to spin, allowing you to play two sets of reels on a single game screen. This, essentially, doubles your chances of winning – although it requires an increase in stake size.
Each set of reels operates independently, and they can trigger different bonus features or payline wins simultaneously. If, for example, you hit bonus rounds on both reel sets on the same spin, these bonuses play out one by one, so it’s quite a cool little feature. Some players like this if they’re going for the progressive jackpots too, as it doubles their odds of landing one!
Colossal Reels
The Colossal Reels mechanic is in some of SG Digital’s older games, including a variation of Rainbow Riches and Mighty Black Knight. This unique mechanic takes the traditional slot layout and presents you, once again, with two reel sets: a standard five-reel, three-row layout, and a colossal 5×12 set that operates at the same time, on the right-hand side of the normal-sized reels.
On the colossal set of reels, symbols can be stacked, and there are also a lot more paylines, up to as many as 100. So, on each spin, you get to play with ten reels, although it is just two five-reel games put together. In some bonus rounds, like in Mighty Black Knight, any wild symbol that lands in view on the colossal reels side expands fully, offering some really high levels of win potential!
Best Light & Wonder Slots Ranked By Demoslot Rating

Demo & Review
Our Conclusion: Montezuma is certainly no spring chicken in the world of online slots, but it has stood the test of time and can still be found in countless online casino lobbies. Furthermore, the popularity of this game actually led to Play'n Go creating their very own clone of this slot named Legacy of Egypt, which has also proved to be popular with online players. We enjoy Montezuma here at Demoslot and have done for several years, and this is a game that is likely to continue its path as a classic SG Gaming slot. As for players in general, it's more a case of which theme you like the best when choosing between this and Play'n Go's alternative option; for us, Monty just edges it.

Demo & Review
Our Conclusion: If you're from the UK and have gambled in the past, there's a very high chance that you will have played at least one variation of Rainbow Riches. These games can be found pretty much everywhere, and there's even a huge collection of them now online for players to enjoy. In my opinion, the original of this game will always be the best. The only downside I find to the online version is that the prizes are half the amount of those on the terminals in the land-based premises. But, that aside, this will always be a game I go back to at some stage, purely to spin on it for reminiscing purposes.
Light & Wonder’s Partner Studios
Throughout our review, we’ve talked about and referenced Light & Wonder’s partner studios, so in this section, we’ll highlight who these are and give you some background information on them.
Bally Technologies
Acquired by Scientific Games in 2014 for a whopping $5.1 billion, Bally Technologies was one of the most well-known and iconic slot machine manufacturers, with a history dating back to the 1930s! This was a major acquisition for Scientific Games/SG Digital, and it allowed them to begin offering Bally’s full portfolio of games, including hits like Titanic and Quick Hit Premium.
WMS (Williams Interactive)
WMS – previously known as Williams Interactive – is another legendary slot machine innovator, with roots dating back to developing pinball machines! Scientific Games acquired the company in 2013 for approximately $1.5 billion. WMS became famous for its range of slots – many of which are household names in the iGaming (and land-based world) – including titles like Raging Rhino, Montezuma, and the Wizard of Oz.
Shuffle Master
Scientific Games acquired Shuffle Master in 2013 for around $1.3 billion – another insanely large acquisition! While famous for its automatic card shufflers – designed to “enhance game security and speed” – Shuffle Master also developed proprietary table games like “Let It Ride” and “Three Card Poker.”
Lightning Box
Lightning Box Games is a popular Australian game developer, known for its distinctive and innovative slot games focusing on maths-based mechanics. The studio was renowned for producing games with unique concepts and gaming engines that were often never seen in other slots. It was acquired by Light & Wonder in 2012, although it continues to operate independently, like many of Light & Wonder’s studios.
Elk Studios
Light & Wonder acquired ELK Studios, a Swedish game developer known for its high-quality, mobile-first slot games with innovative features and engaging story themes, back in 2021. Elk Studios is one of the most popular iGaming software providers, and it’s behind not just highly unique mechanics but also some hugely popular games, including Electric Sam, Voodoo Gold, and Pirots 3. Like Lightning Box Games, Elk Studios continues to function independently.
Playzido
Acquired by Light & Wonder on May 10, 2022, Playzido is a UK-based game platform and content provider. Known for its innovative game development and distribution approach, Playzido offers a diverse portfolio of online casino games, including hosting other content from independent studios. This acquisition was primarily designed to expand Light & Wonder’s presence in the UK, which, since Barcrest and WMS fell off the radar a bit, needed improving!
Authentic Gaming
Light & Wonder entered the live dealer market by acquiring Authentic Gaming in November 2021. Authentic Gaming provides live-streamed casino games, and while they’re not the largest live studio, they are quite notable, considering they stream live from real land-based casinos, including London’s Hippodrome!
NextGen Gaming
NextGen Gaming is another major “powerhouse” in the online gambling world, and it was a pretty significant move when Scientific Games/SG Digital acquired it. NextGen Gaming was founded in 1999 and purchased by NYX Interactive in 2011. It operated as a subsidiary until Scientific Games made a deal to make it part of their growing business in 2018!
Red7Mobile
Red7Mobile was a UK-based mobile and desktop casino game developer that also created sports apps. The company was acquired by Scientific Games/SG Digital in 2017, but it appears to have gone dormant since; it’s unclear whether its team/operations were absorbed into Light & Wonder or not.
Barcrest
Acquired by Scientific Games from IGT in 2010, Barcrest is a UK-based gaming company with a long history in arcade and casino games, famous for titles like Rainbow Riches and Thai Flower. This was another major acquisition, and it allowed Barcrest’s games, which had predominantly succeeded in land-based casinos, bingo halls, and betting shops, to be made available online.
Come2Play
SciPlay, Light & Wonder’s social gaming subsidiary, acquired this Israeli social gaming company in 2020. Come2Play brought expertise in the social casino market and diversified SciPlay’s portfolio with its mobile and social game offerings. This acquisition was designed to grow SciPlay’s reach in the ever-growing social gaming industry, particularly in markets like the US.
Dragonplay LTD
Scientific Games acquired Dragonplay, another Israeli social casino game developer, a few years ago. Little is known about what this acquisition entailed, but it appears they work closely alongside SciPlay.
Koukoi Games Oy
SciPlay acquired Koukoi Games Oy, a Finland-based developer of casual mobile games, in July 2021. The acquisition brought an experienced team focused on casual game development, again supporting SciPlay and helping them expand into the casual gaming industry. They achieve this primarily through developing new game concepts and using their proprietary technology platform.
Stargames Pty Ltd
This Australian game development studio is part of Light & Wonder’s ANZ (Australia and New Zealand) operations. Unfortunately, there is very little information surrounding the actual acquisition, and some sources speculate that the studio was integrated into previous acquisitions like Bally Technologies, which had a significant presence in Australia.
Bang Bang Games
Light & Wonder made a 20% equity investment in Bang Bang Games, a London-based slot studio, in April 2025. This investment, part of Light & Wonder’s Spark program, is designed to “support emerging studios by providing them with tools and market access”, although it remains to be seen how this will pan out as it’s very early days.
Commitment to Player Safety & Fairness
Licensing & Regulation
Light & Wonder holds several licenses across various jurisdictions, and this allows them to push their games out to players all over the world. They are licensed in Malta under the MGA Critical Game Supply Licence, with the license number MGA/B2B/112/2004. In Greece, they operate under the HGC Manufacturers Licence, number HGC-000022-MN.
Romania has granted them the ONJN Class 2-a Licence, Decizie Nr. 310, and in Sweden, they hold the SGA (Spelinspektionen) Licence to manufacture, with license number 23Si756. Belgium has also awarded them a license through the Commission Des Jeux De Hasard, with license E563148. In Denmark, Spillemyndigheden licenses them, with the license number J.nr. 24-439710.
Their operations in Gibraltar are covered by the B2B Gaming Operator’s Licence (RGL No. 073), while in the UK, they hold several remote operating licences. These include the Combined Remote Operating Licence 000-040129-R-319453-014, 000-008894-R-104453-019, and 000-041115-R-320348-019, which allow them to legally operate across various parts of the UK.
It’s one of the most well-licensed iGaming studios we’ve ever seen. To our great pleasure, it also maintains a clear and up-to-date licensing page on its website, giving visitors full transparency of its operations.
Fair Play & Security
As one of the world’s largest casino game developers, Light & Wonder has to deal with extensive testing of its games. One of the main testing houses they use is Gaming Laboratories International (GLI), which is considered a reputable and respected name in gaming testing and certification. They also work with BMM (BMM Testlabs) – although it’s unclear when (or why) they use each testing house over the other.
Partnerships & Collaborations
Light & Wonder has established partnerships with numerous content providers and aggregation platforms to promote and distribute its own slot games and launch titles from other studios within its portfolio.
In North America, for example, LNW has secured exclusive distribution agreements with several game developers. Notably, they have partnered with SPRIBE to bring the popular crash game Aviator to US operators, and they also partnered with Konami to bring on games like China Shores and Astronomical Magic, which are now available to operators in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Light & Wonder also offers slots from other game studios on its network. This includes developers like Peter & Sons, Stakelogic, and Evoplay.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Light & Wonder’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts are pretty extensive, as we’ve come to expect from a major publicly-traded company like this. All of their CSR initiatives are run through their “Game Changers” program, which focuses on five main areas: Community, People, Planet, Player, and Governance.
In the Community category alone, for example, Light & Wonder has donated $2.3 million and volunteered nearly 16,000 hours to 289 charities worldwide! For their People initiatives, they doubled the number of members in their Employee Resource Groups, reaching over 1,300, and achieved a 93% participation rate in their global engagement survey.
They’re also pretty ‘hot’ on environmental efforts. For example, Light & Wonder funded the planting of 5,000 trees and managed to recycle $13 million worth of materials from decommissioned gaming machines. They’ve invested $150,000 in responsible gaming programs around the world, and, according to their website, these efforts all tie into 12 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, so it’s very impressive, to say the least!

Light & Wonder has made a historic mark on the iGaming industry, no one can deny that! They offer a massive range of innovative products and are constantly adapting. With a history dating back to 1917, they’re also one of the oldest studios in the world, and it’s a really impressive journey they’ve been on.
Their game portfolio is highly diverse, offering everything from in-house developments to games from studios like Barcrest, WMS, and Elk Studios, so there’s something for pretty much everyone! Plus, their acquisition of Authentic Gaming means they can now offer live dealer games, too!
