History & Company Background

Microgaming, established in 1994 in Douglas, Isle of Man, is one of the biggest names in the online gambling world, and for good reason. Founded by Martin Moshal, the company developed the first true online casino software and, the same year, launched The Gaming Club, arguably the very first online casino. In 1998, they released the world’s first progressive jackpot slot, Cash Splash.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Microgaming dominated the world of slots. They developed a huge range of branded titles like Game of Thrones, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2, and their early non-branded slots like Immortal Romance and Thunderstruck II would go on to become some of the most successful slots ever made.

In recent years, Microgaming has shifted toward B2B platforms and sportsbook tech (powering Betway’s sportsbook) while licensing out its games. In 2024–2025, it rebranded as Apricot Investments, focusing primarily on platform software and AI-powered gaming experiences​.

Microgaming’s Quickfire platform, introduced in 2010, quickly became the industry’s most popular game distribution network, allowing operators to access a vast library of games through a single integration. Quickfire would soon turn into yet another industry-leading product from the developer. In May 2022, Microgaming completed the sale of its Quickfire distribution business and online games portfolio to Games Global Limited, a newly established company founded in early 2021. First released in 2006, Mega Moolah is perhaps one of Microgaming’s most iconic releases, and it’s seen, to many, as their flagship progressive slot. Immortal Romance

Launched in 2011, Immortal Romance is a gothic vampire-themed video slot that became famous for its deep storytelling and engaging features. Built with a 243-ways-to-win mechanic instead of traditional paylines, Immortal Romance changed the face of slotting forever when it was released. It’s very volatile (for its time, at least) and follows the life of the four main characters: Amber, Troy, Michael, and Sarah.

Each character unlocks their own free-spin bonus modes, which can be accessed through the Chamber of Spins. This is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view, and your progress is saved, so when you return to the game, you can unlock later bonuses. Thunderstruck II

Released in 2019 by Gameburger Studios for Microgaming, 9 Masks of Fire is the only slot we’ve covered in this top five that Microgaming didn’t produce. We’ll talk more about why this is and how their partner arrangements work later in this review, but we wanted to include it here as it is, in our opinion, a good game.

Featuring a vibrant African tribal theme, 9 Masks of Fire is designed around a five-reel, three-row layout, and you’ll find a huge maximum win potential of up to 9,000x! Landing three or more shield scatter symbols triggers the wheel-of-fortune bonus, determining how many free spins and multipliers you receive. 

It’s possible to begin with up to 30 free spins and a 3x multiplier, and during the bonus round, you’ll find that there are far more mask symbols appearing on the screen! There’s also an instant win bonus, which awards cash prizes!

Jackpot Slots

Microgaming partially built its reputation on networked progressive jackpots, and Games Global inherited this legacy when it acquired the business in 2022. Arguably, Microgaming’s most well-known progressive jackpot release is their Mega Moolah slot, which we briefly covered earlier. Developed in 2006, this now has a number of linked games as part of it, and the multi-tiered jackpot network has, as of now, paid more than €1.3 billion!

Another really well-known jackpot game/series from Microgaming is WowPot! Launched in 2020, WowPot! is a four-tier network that includes Mini, Midi, Maxi, and WowPot! jackpots. It’s seeded at two million Euros, meaning the minimum jackpot amount is always €2M! 

Surprisingly, it quickly surpassed Mega Moolah in total payouts, hitting a new record €38.4M top win in December 2023! Some popular WowPot! Games include Book of Atem WowPot! and Wheel of Wishes, both designed by Microgaming’s partner studios.

Both legacy Microgaming and current Games Global content include a full range of digital table games. Megaways

Microgaming was one of the earlier competitor studios that licensed the Megaways engine from Big Time Gaming. This was a shrewd move from the developer, as it meant all of the providers under the Games Global umbrella could use the mechanic in the creation of new releases if they wished.

If you are new to Megaways, this unique reel-modifying engine can generate a different number of symbols on the reels every spin, changing how many ways you have to win each time. Typically, on a Megaways slot, the minimum number of winning ways possible is 64, whilst the max tends to come in at 117,649, although in recent times we’ve seen this number get a lot higher. With regards to creating a win, you’ll generally need at least three matching symbols to land on consecutive reels starting from the leftmost reel first.

Mega Moolah Progressive Network

The Mega Moolah Progressive Network is one of the most famous progressive jackpot systems in online slots. The Mega Moolah jackpot starts at a base amount, known as a seed, and increases with each wager made on any participating game until it’s won.

Our Conclusion:

We’re intrigued by the possibility that the Terminator 2 slot used to be a much higher-variance game, but it works well just as it is. We can’t help but suspect that one of these other reviewers simply got it wrong, and the second source copied the first without doing their research—you might be surprised how often this kind of thing occurs!

What more can we say? It's a fun game with great winning potential and medium variance, which means you should get plenty of time for your money. Terminator 2 is a winner, and should there be time for a very last thought, I think we all know what it should be:

Microgaming’s Partner Studios

Alchemy Gaming

Alchemy Gaming was founded in late 2019 as an exclusive partner for Microgaming. The team is led by Rory Harpur, a former Gamesys producer, and Alchemy focuses heavily on data-driven game design. Their debut slot, Wheel of Wishes, introduced the “WowPot” progressive jackpot. Other notable releases include 10,000 Wishes and Africa X Up. Their titles are available exclusively via Games Global’s aggregation platform.

Almond Gaming

Almond Gaming is one of the newer additions to the Games Global portfolio, officially launching in early 2023. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find much public information about them, but we do know that their focus has been on streamlined, mobile-first slots with classic mechanics. Their first release was Snakes & Ladders Snake Eyes, offering a unique, modern take on the classic board game theme. Almond Gaming is yet to see real mainstream success, but they do make some reasonable games from what we’ve seen so far.

All For One Studios

All For One Studios was launched under Games Global’s partnership model in 2022. Unlike many boutique studios, All For One is structured as a collaborative team with rotating contributors rather than a traditional single leadership. Their first releases include Kings of Crystals and Roar of Thunder, both featuring highly customisable bonus rounds. The studio primarily targets regulated European markets like the UK and Spain.

AreaVegas Games

AreaVegas Games was established in 2023, aiming to deliver “Vegas-style” classic slots and table games to online players. The studio doesn’t publicly list any core members of the team. Their first major title, Blazing Bison Gold Blitz, was released in partnership with Games Global and combines land-based slot ‘vibes’ with online bonus mechanics. AreaVegas Games specialises in lower-variance games appealing to casual players, mirroring the types of slots you’d generally find in land-based casinos.

Aurum Signature Studios

Aurum Signature Studios was launched in late 2020 and was specifically created to deliver exclusive, bespoke slots for Microgaming operators. Led by Victoria Bonner (formerly of Pragmatic Play, now Aurum’s Head of Operations), the studio’s core specialty is custom content. Some of their notable releases include A Tale of Elves, Treasure Tracks, and a series of operator-exclusive branded slots like Book of Mrs Claus.

Blue Ring Studios

Blue Ring Studios launched in 2021, aiming to produce medium-volatility slots tailored to European markets. Their first widely distributed title was Treasure Tracks, which became available in 2021. The studio operates as a small team of around 15 developers and artists, and unlike most Games Global partners, Blue Ring uses old-school themes and fairly simple mechanics.

Buck Stakes Entertainment

Veterans from Stormcraft Studios and other major Microgaming-affiliated teams founded Buck Stakes Entertainment in early 2021. Their first game, 8 Golden Skulls of Holly Roger Megaways, was released in April 2021 and, of course, used Big Time Gaming’s Megaways mechanic. Buck Stakes’ games tend to be pretty feature-heavy. John Coleman, the former Microgaming CEO, leads the team, too!

Circular Arrow

Circular Arrow joined Games Global’s lineup in mid-2023, branding itself as a “math-first” studio. Their first slot release, Crimson Moon, was pretty risky, as it was highly volatile and offered a maximum win potential of 20,000x! It proved popular, however, and it would be a sign of things to come for the provider!

Coin Machine Gaming

Coin Machine Gaming entered the Games Global ecosystem in 2024 with a mission to revive classic coin-op arcade themes. Their flagship slot, Retro Reels: Neon Nights, does a solid job of combining vintage slot cabinet design elements with modern video slot concepts, and you’ll find a ton of bonuses and features, including re-spins and expanding wilds!

Flip Five Gaming

Flip Five Gaming is a micro-studio founded in 2022, focusing exclusively on quick-play slots and instant-win games. Their first major release, Flip the Switch, became popular thanks to its unique, ultra-fast 5×5 grid mechanics. Fortune Factory Studios

Fortune Factory Studios was founded in 2018 and quickly became one of Microgaming’s most popular exclusive partners. Based in Canada, the team is made up of industry veterans from companies like Electronic Arts and IGT. Their first hit was Roman Power, but they’re better known for Tiki Mania and Aliya’s Wishes, both vibrant, mid-volatility slots. So far, they have released over 15 titles exclusively for Games Global.

Foxium

CEO Åke André, a former game producer at Odobo, established Foxium in 2015 in Tallinn, Estonia. Known for highly narrative-driven slots, Foxium’s first major success was The Great Albini, which hit online casinos in 2018. Stumpy McDoodles followed this. Foxium’s games look superb, offering multiple bonuses, features, and solid win potential. In 2017, Foxium signed an exclusivity deal with Microgaming’s Quickfire platform, now integrated into Games Global. Their newer releases increasingly focus on the US and Ontario markets, too.

Gameburger Studios

Gameburger Studios launched in August 2019 as a Microgaming-exclusive studio, specifically created to bring back classic American-style slots. Based in the US, their first release was Break da Bank Again Respin, a modern update to the 2008 Microgaming classic. Other major titles include Hyper Strike, 9 Masks of Fire, and 9 Pots of Gold, all of which did well, especially in the regulated North American markets.

Gold Coin Studios

Gold Coin Studios, founded in 2018 in Reno, Nevada, specialises in simple, land-based-style slot games adapted for online play. CEO John Duffy, a veteran of IGT and Bally Technologies, is responsible for leading the studio, and their first major release was Arthur’s Gold. This was followed by other slots like Silver Seas and Cat Clans.

Half Pixel Studios

Half Pixel Studios entered the Games Global network in late 2022, focusing on visually rich, mobile-first slot experiences. Their first slot release, Wondrous Woods, featured a unique parallax scrolling background. It looks really cool! The studio focuses on developing medium-to-high variance slots. Their team is relatively small, with fewer than 20 employees who are located throughout Europe.

Hammertime Games

Hammertime Games was founded in 2023 and immediately distinguished itself with a focus on medieval and Norse-themed slots. Their first release, Mjolnir Strike, focused on hammer-wielding gods and massive expanding symbols, and, in our opinion, it’s a lot of fun to play! Hammertime’s games often contain high levels of win potential, over 15,000x, sometimes!

High Limit Studio

High Limit Studio was established in mid-2022 specifically to cater to VIPs and high rollers! Their games tend to feature much higher minimum bet levels than normal, often £1 or £2. Their first slot release, High Roller Royale, features a maximum bet limit that reaches over £100!

Infinity Dragon Studios

Infinity Dragon Studios debuted in 2020, primarily targeting Asian markets with lucky numbers and dragon-themed slots. Their biggest title to date is Royal Dragon Infinity Reels, which combined the popular Infinity Reels mechanic with an Asian twist. Their games typically offer very high volatility and complex bonus systems, and their development team is based in Hong Kong and Malta.

INO Games

INO Games entered the scene in early 2023, branding itself as a “maths house” before anything else. Their first release, Time Spinners, featured a heavy focus on multipliers and random bonus features, and, unusually for a brand new game studio, it offered a huge maximum win potential of up to 25,000x! Their team is based in Eastern Europe.

Just For The Win Studios

A team of ex-NetEnt and LeoVegas developers, headquartered in Stockholm and Gothenburg, Sweden, founded Just For The Win (JFTW) in 2016. They’re perhaps one of the best-known Games Global partner studios, and they’ve released a slew of hits, including Deco Diamonds, Western Gold and Big Boom Riches. JFTW’s slots are all highly polished, and most are designed around a medium-volatility maths model!

Neko Games

Neko Games is a Buenos Aires-based studio launched in 2020, specialising in bingo-style slots aimed at Latin American and Spanish-speaking audiences. Their first release, Super Showball, incorporated elements of the classic Brazilian bingo game into an online format. Later releases included Fu 88 and Immortal Romance Video Bingo, taking some of Microgaming’s older concepts and combining them with video bingo elements!

Nailed It! Games

Nailed It! Former developers from Yggdrasil and Wazdan, based in Kraków, Poland, founded Nailed It Games in 2022. Their first major release, Dog Days, launched in 2023 and introduced innovative synchronised reel mechanics. The studio focuses on highly volatile, feature-rich slots with cartoonish visuals. They focus largely on mobile-first design, and their target markets currently include Europe and regulated US markets.

Neon Valley Studios

Neon Valley Studios, launched in 2019 out of Las Vegas, tries to bring “old-school Vegas glam” into modern online slots. Their first game, Aurora Wilds, became an instant hit with its re-spin mechanic and jackpot feature. Neon Valley is best known for medium volatility games, and some of their other notable releases include Age of Conquest and Queen of Alexandria WowPot.

Northern Lights Gaming

A group of UK-based industry veterans, led by CEO Andrew Goodale, a former Barcrest designer, founded Northern Lights Gaming in 2017. Initially focused on developing games for Sky Betting & Gaming, Northern Lights decided to move towards a larger distribution model via Microgaming in 2018. Their most notable games include Rocky’s Gold, TrailBlazer, and Gods of Asgard Megaways. 

Oros Gaming

Oros Gaming launched in 2022 within the Games Global ecosystem, focusing on premium video slots for international markets. Their first major release, Wonders of the Deep, combined a high-volatility math model with some solid underwater graphics! Based primarily in Malta, Oros operates with a team of about 20 developers and artists. They aim for no more than four releases per year, too, which is quite unusual, and shows they care more about quality and quantity!

On Air Entertainment

On Air Entertainment was founded in 2020 by a team of ex-Evolution Gaming employees, and the company has headquarters in Malta and operational hubs in Riga and Krakow. They specialise in live dealer casino games, launching their first blackjack tables in November 2021.
