Kalamba Games is a well-known iGaming software provider founded in 2016, with headquarters in Malta and a development studio in Kraków, Poland. Despite being a relatively smaller company in the industry, Kalamba has built a name for itself by focusing on high-quality online slot games that rely on innovative mechanics, superb graphics, and creative features, such as its signature HyperBonus bonus buy option.

Through our Kalamba Games review, you can discover more about this software house as we cover topics such as company history, licensing, and in-game mechanics and features. As always, we give you the chance to experience everything the studio offers by supplying you with a free library of demo slots to play.

Company History & Background

Kalamba Games was co-founded by iGaming veterans Steve Cutler (CEO) and Alex Cohen (COO) in late 2016. Both founders had decades of experience working in the real-money and social gaming sectors, and this background was what allowed them to approach things a bit differently at Kalamba.

The company started as an international studio with two locations: a corporate base in Malta for commercial and licensing operations and a production hub in Kraków, Poland, where the game development team was based.

In its first year, Kalamba partnered with ORYX Gaming (now part of Bragg Gaming Group) to distribute its new games via ORYX’s platform. This was a significant move and allowed all their games to be pushed out to hundreds of casinos worldwide.

Today, the provider is, in our opinion, a mid-level developer. They’re not overly well-known, but they’ve had some hits, and we’ll look at some of their best game releases later in this review.

Highest RTP Kalamba Games Slots

Many players are unaware of the return to player percentage on an online slot, often referred to as RTP. Although calculated over millions or billions of spins, this percentage is important as it reflects the amount you can expect as a return over long periods of play. We like to let our users and members know about the highest RTP games for each provider, so below you will find a table of legacy and new slots from Kalamba Games showing their highest offerings.

Kalamba Games Product Portfolio

Kalamba Games’ portfolio is all about online slots, and from classic fruity-style games to modern, fantasy-adventure titles, the software provider offers it all! So far, the game developer has chosen not to expand into other areas, so you won’t find any table, live games, video poker or bingo titles. However, this isn’t a bad thing, and they’re clearly choosing to stay focused on what they do best – making slots!

Online Slot Games

Kalamba Games is a slots-only game developer, and while this means that some players might not find everything they’re seeking, for those who only care about slots, it’s a fine trade-off. Without the hassle of developing other types of games, Kalamba can dedicate its time solely to building video slots, and this means the production quality is generally better than what you’d find from other providers!

Below, we’re going to run through five of the provider’s most notable slot releases.

Blazing Bull

Blazing Bull is a 6-reel, 4-row slot offering 4,096 ways to win and an exceptionally high default RTP of 97.4%! The game became a player favourite for several reasons (the high RTP being one), but another factor that helped the game gain popularity was the progressive free spins system!

As you play, you fill two meters, and eventually, this will unlock Silver Free Spins (with 3x multiplier wilds) and Gold Free Spins (with 5x multiplier wilds). Of course, progression-based slots aren’t for everyone, but it’s a solid concept, and it proved to be such a success that Kalamba went on to release Blazing Bull 2, where you can hit multipliers of up to 8x!

Joker Max

Kalamba has a line of “Joker” slots that put a modern twist on classic fruit machine themes, and Joker Max is one of the most successful releases from this series. The game’s designed around a five-reel, four-row layout, and you’ll find 40 fixed paylines in play at all times. The game is pretty well-designed, and you’ll see a retro neon style throughout the slot!

Now, what makes Joker Max exciting is its four-level jackpot system: landing enough bonus symbols in one spin can award one of the jackpots (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum), and while they’re not progressives, it’s still a pretty cool mechanic, especially as it (usually) triggers quite frequently.

Joker Max also offers a free spins bonus, and while there’s no multipliers here, you can land extra wilds! Plus, true to Kalamba form, a HyperBonus option is also offered, allowing you to buy the free spins feature directly!

Caribbean Anne

Caribbean Anne is a pirate-themed video slot from Kalamba that takes you to the high seas in search of vast amounts of treasure! The game’s designed around a five-reel layout, and there are 40 fixed paylines in play at all times. Notably, Caribbean Anne was Kalamba’s first slot to contain the HyperBet mechanic!

When you load the game, you’ll be presented with a variety of different bet levels: 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x your base bet. If you choose to play with one of the HyperBets active, you’ll enjoy various perks – including, for example, higher multipliers on the wild symbols, or a higher starting number of free spins.

Big Bounty Bill

One of Kalamba’s most imaginative slots, Big Bounty Bill combines a Wild West theme with futuristic steampunk vibes! The game’s played on a five-reel, four-row layout, and, instead of conventional paylines, it uses a 1024-ways-to-win mechanic instead! However, the game also boasts expanding reels that can increase the grid to 6 rows high, creating up to 7,776 ways to win!

During the game, a number of special symbols and a re-spin feature let you “shoot” at the top of the reels to unlock additional rows! If you fully expand the reels, you trigger a bonus round with free spins, all played out on a fully expanded grid! Plus, like many recent Kalamba slots, Big Bounty Bill contains a HyperBonus, so you can buy instant entry into the main bonus round if you want.

Griffin’s Quest

Finally, we have Griffin’s Quest, Kalamba’s attempt at creating a fantasy-themed slot. Set in a mythological world of griffins, unicorns, and gods, this 5-reel, 4-row slot offers 2,400 ways to win (a highly unusual number of ways-to-win).

The game is packed with bonus features: there’s a Bonus Wheel that can award one of several free spins games or instant prizes, and during free spins, players can experience features like symbol splitting (certain symbols can split to count as two, effectively increasing the number of ways to win) or expanding reels in specific modes.

It may only boast a medium-to-high variance math model, but Griffin’s Quest is superbly made, in our opinion, and it doesn’t just look the part, it plays fantastically, too.

Jackpot Slots

Jackpots are an area where Kalamba doesn’t offer too much, and rather than producing progressive jackpot games, the company has chosen, instead, to focus on localised in-game jackpots. Kalamba does not currently offer any of the huge pooled progressive jackpots like Mega Moolah or WOWPot.

However, many of their slots do include local jackpot mechanics or “Cashpot” systems that function similarly on a game-by-game basis. For example, Mammoth Chase, one of Kalamba’s early releases, introduced personal progressive jackpots. In that game, collecting scattered mammoth symbols could award one of three jackpot levels, with the highest “Grand jackpot “ seeding at 1,000x your bet. This meant that as you played, your chances of hitting a jackpot prize grew, and the value of the jackpot increased slightly, too.

Another jackpot-style innovation appears in Kalamba’s Joker series, Joker Max, Joker Lanterns, etc. These slots feature four fixed jackpot tiers, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, and they’re won by landing a set number of jackpot symbols in a single spin or, sometimes, through a standalone bonus round.

Kalamba also uses Cashpots in some games. A Cashpot is a jackpot prize that can be won by accumulating symbols or via a bonus wheel. You’ll find this in games like 9 Blazing Cashpots, Cashpot Kegs, and, more recently, Cashpot Kegs Megaways. In the latter, landing eight or more of the special Cashpot symbols awards a jackpot instantly, with a top prize worth a cool 25,000x!

Table Games, Bingo, and Other Casino Games

Kalamba Games sticks firmly to what it does best, which is slot games. They currently do not offer table games, live casino, bingo, or lottery titles. In our opinion, this is a positive, as it means they’re focused on doing what they do best. And, while it’s true that some game developers can offer a balanced multi-game portfolio, most of the time, it’s pointless, as players only really play casino games from mainstream developers, anyway!

Game Mechanics, How They Work, and Unique Features

Over the years, Kalamba Games has incorporated different engines and mechanics into its slots, and in this section, we will explore each one and how they work.

Paylines

Paylines are the most traditional mechanic found in slot machines, and this format sees wins counted along specific lines across the reels. Kalamba has several slots that use fixed (or adjustable) paylines. Now, the most common type of payline game is a five-reel, three-row slot, with usually 10, 20, or 25 paylines, but you can sometimes find games that offer 30, 40, 50, or even 100 fixed paylines! Any more than that, and you’ll generally see a ways-to-win game instead.

In payline slots, players are awarded a win when, typically, at least three matching symbols connect across an active payline starting from the leftmost reel first.

Popular Payline Games From Kalamba Games:

  • Midas Treasure
  • Ruby Hunter
  • Legends of Senteng

Ways to Win

Many modern slots do away with fixed paylines and allow winning combinations in any left-to-right sequence on adjacent reels. Kalamba was, from the outset, keen to adopt this for themselves, and you’ll find the ways-to-win mechanic in quite a few of their slots.

In a ways-to-win slot, as long as matching symbols appear on consecutive reels, starting from the first reel, you win – and their exact position on each reel doesn’t matter. Ways to Win games generally offer better win potential than payline-based games (at least in terms of the base game wins you can hit) and they’re a bit more fun, too!

Popular Way to Win Games From Kalamba Games:

  • Blazing Bull
  • Safari Chase
  • Mooncake Riches

Megaways

Megaways is a mechanic that was created by Big Time Gaming (BTG) – an Australian game developer who became huge within iGaming in the late 2010s. The Megaways mechanic essentially changed the face of online slots, and it moved the industry away from low-variance games in favour of high-variance slots that offered significantly more win potential than most of the other games released at the time.

The Megaways mechanic can vary, but generally, it involves a six-reel setup, and between two and seven symbols per reel per spin. The number of symbols that land on each reel changes every spin, and thus so does the number of ways to win – or Megaways – per spin!

Due to the popularity of the Megaways mechanic, BTG started to license out the technology to other game developers – and Kalamba eventually licensed it for themselves, allowing them to use the technology in their slots.

Popular Megaways Games From Kalamba Games:

  • Rumble Ratz Megaways
  • Cashpot Kegs Megaways
  • Machina Megaways

Unique Features from Kalamba Games

HyperBet

This is a mechanic unique to Kalamba that allows players to adjust the level of risk of a game by essentially betting more in return for more perks and features. If a slot has HyperBet enabled, ike Caribbean Anne or Monkey God, you’ll see options to increase your bet level, and Kalamba usually offer you four different options.

The more you bet, the better the perks, and an increased HyperBet level will enhance certain aspects of the game, for example, increasing multipliers, adding more free spins, or boosting the base RTP slightly. It gives players a degree of control over volatility, but not in the way you’d find in Wazdan slots, for example, where you can genuinely adjust the volatility setting.

HyperBonus

Another Kalamba mechanic, HyperBonus, is the studio’s branded Bonus Buy feature. In jurisdictions where it’s allowed, players can click the HyperBonus button to instantly purchase a bonus round, usually free spins, rather than needing to trigger it naturally from the base game.

In many of their games, Kalamba offers multiple HyperBonus options, too. For example, you could buy eight free spins for one price or 15 free spins for a higher price, etc. Interestingly, HyperBonus appeared before bonus buys can become mainstream – and this shows how, even as a smaller studio, Kalamba can adapt and follow (or create) industry trends!

#2 Aztec ApocalypseKalamba Games

Slot Stats: RTP: 96% | Max Win: 10000x | Review & Demo

Our Conclusion:

Having been bombarded by both Hold & Win and collection-based slots of late, it was a breath of fresh air to review Kalamba Games' Aztec Apocalypse today. The main hook in this game, and indeed part of the game's longer title, is the Prizematch mechanic, which activates when matching symbols land in the highlighted positions on reels 1 and 2. This then allows for all cash symbols that land to be collected, along with all symbols from the Prizemartch positions being awarded a monetary value too.

Once the bonus round is activated, the Prizematch engine comes to life, with additional multipliers positioned above reels 3, 4, 5, and 6. Any cash values appearing on these reels will be multiplied by the respective amount above them, potentially leading to impressive returns. Other highlights of Aztec Apocalypse include players having the option to choose how many ways to win they wish to play with and having the choice to pick from multiple bonus buy options.

Wrapping up this review, it's been a pleasure to play something remotely exciting and original. So, if you're in the market for a new game to try, Aztec Apocalypse is a slot I'd recommend.

Commitment to Player Safety & Fairness

Licensing & Regulation

Kalamba Games is a reputable and licensed iGaming operator. Perhaps most notably, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) licensed Kalamba, and they were issued this in 2021. While the Malta Gaming Authority isn’t the world’s strictest iGaming regulator, they’re highly regarded, as receiving one of their licenses is not just a simple process.

Their MGA license number is: MGA/B2B/861/2020.

Kalamba’s games are also available in many other regions and jurisdictions. They are certified for players in Italy, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Ontario (Canada), but thanks to the provider’s aggregator partnerships, they can be offered in other regions, too. We’ll discuss the details of these collaborations in the following section of this review.

Fair Play & Security

Every Kalamba Games slot is built fairly, and all of the provider’s games use a random number generator. Their games and software undergo strict quality assurance and testing to ensure there are no bugs that could affect payouts or gameplay.

Once a game is developed, it’s not just released into casinos. Instead, it’s sent to accredited independent labs for testing. These labs verify the RNG, check that the game’s stated RTP is accurate, and ensure that all parts of the game function fairly and as expected. Kalamba Games doesn’t specify which testing house they use, but it’s likely iTech Labs, eCOGRA (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance), or GLI (Gaming Laboratories International) – three of the world’s leading iGaming certification labs.

Partnerships & Collaborations

To expand their reach and get their games in front of as many potential players as possible, Kalamba Games has entered several significant partnerships within the iGaming industry. These collaborations have been vital in getting Kalamba’s slots onto casino sites and into new markets, and below, we’ll explore a few of the studio’s main partnerships:

ORYX Gaming / Bragg Gaming Group: This was Kalamba’s first major distribution partnership, established in 2017. ORYX’s aggregation platform enabled Kalamba to launch its early games across numerous online casinos already integrated with ORYX. Over the years, as ORYX was acquired by Bragg Gaming, the partnership evolved, too – and before long, Kalamba’s complete portfolio became available via Bragg’s Remote Games Server!

Relax Gaming: Kalamba joined Relax Gaming’s Silver Bullet program, an aggregator platform where game studios can distribute games through Relax’s platform. Relax Gaming is known for its huge network of operators (especially in Europe) and its ability to handle heavy traffic load and compliance (meaning Kalamba can release its games in markets where the studio isn’t licensed, provided it’s certified).

SoftGamings and SOFTSWISS: Kalamba has also partnered with multiple aggregation platforms, including SoftGamings and SOFTSWISS, which are well-known casino software providers and aggregators. These partnerships ensure that Kalamba’s games can be easily added to a large number of online casinos that use those platforms for content. For example, SOFTSWISS Game Aggregator listing Kalamba means any casino running on the SOFTSWISS engine can offer Kalamba slots, and this has been very important, especially in the crypto gambling market.

Corporate Social Responsibility

While Kalamba Games has been around for a while, we couldn’t find any mention of CSR initiatives on its website. This isn’t a bad thing, CSR programs are often reserved exclusively for the larger iGaming providers, and many smaller studios don’t have the budget or time for them!

Final Summary

Kalamba Games has, in a relatively short space of time, managed to establish itself as a respected provider in the iGaming world. Sure, they’re not a household name, and not every player will be familiar with them or their slots, but their releases are generally okay, and they’ve done a good job of gradually growing their brand.

They’ve also worked hard to incorporate fresh and unique ideas into the industry, and the result is a portfolio of games that are visually impressive, fun to play, and packed with innovative features like HyperBet and HyperBonus. Their games also offer some fun themes, solid maths models, and generally fair (or above average) RTPs, and they don’t show any signs of slowing down or stopping!

Their partnerships with aggregator platforms like Relax’s Silver Bullet ensure their games are readily available, and with a constant flow of new content released each month, Kalamba looks set to be well-positioned as a reliable provider of casino slots in iGaming for the foreseeable future.
