Game Overview
Stand back folks; there’s a new outlaw in town! Or is that meant to be the sheriff? Ah well, not to worry – the new billy the kid on the block is Wild Outlaws, a 4,096 payway online slot developer by Light & Wonder. All of the usual Wild West tropes are here – cowboy boots, cowboy hats, bull skull wall décor, all that jazz, and it’s all set on a backdrop that looks like one of those stereotypical villages you always see in Western films. It’s an authentic look for a Wild West slot, but I’m even more excited to see a tidy maximum jackpot of 10,000x the total bet! There’s no trade-off in terms of the RTP either – at 96%, the odds offered in Wild Outlaws are spot-on with the current industry average.
The base game includes a ‘Wild Revolver’ feature that can trigger randomly when two bonus symbols land on the reels, which can be a nice consolation prize on all those occasions when you fail to hit the main bonus round! For that, you’ll need to catch all three bonus symbols on a single spin, which will then award you up to 18 free spins on an enlarged reel set. There’s an interesting bonus bet option available too; win more than 1.6x your bet with it enabled, and you’ll be taken to a ‘pick me’ bonus where you may be able to win a set of free spins. Not bad for just 50% extra per round.
I’ve been impressed with this game so far, and it may even be the best Light & Wonder slot that I have played so far! Check it out for yourself with our free demo slot of Wild Outlaws, available to play below.
Wild Outlaws Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
There’s been a mini-rush of Wild West-themed slots released recently as slot developers continue to challenge the dominance of NetEnt’s Dead or Alive 2 within the category. The competition is really heating up too – Stakelogic’s Outlaws Hunter was a reasonable effort, and the latest Money Train 3 game by Relax was an absolute smash-hit. I wouldn’t have expected anything less from that one though! In comparison to those games, Wild Outlaws looks a little bit rough around the edges – the graphics could certainly be better, that’s for sure. Graphics aren’t everything, of course – the feature set looks to be excellent, and the 10,000x jackpot is more than enough for me to forget about some less-than-perfect visuals!
The most valuable symbol on the paytable is a huge sack of gold, awarding 10x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. The bull skull takes the second-place spot with a return of 5x for all six symbols, whilst the cowboy hat and boots share equal returns of 1.5x for a complete payway. That’s your lot as far as the high pays are concerned – the rest of the paytable is made up of six royals with returns ranging from 0.4x for six nines up to 1x for six aces or kings. All symbols appear in stacks on the reels, which should make it a little easier to win on a large number of pay ways simultaneously.
The minimum/maximum permitted wagers in Wild Outlaws are €0.20 and €10.00 per spin, respectively. There are a decent amount of bet sizes to play at within this range, with the only slight complaint perhaps coming from the serious high rollers, but let’s be honest here, surely €10 a spin is enough for anyone.
Base Game & Modifiers
Wild Outlaws is an ‘all-ways pay’ machine that uses six reels of four rows each, resulting in a total of 4,096 ways to win. All winning combinations must start on the leftmost reel and consist of two or more matching symbols on adjacent reels. Only the highest-paying gold symbol has a reward for two symbols, and all other items on the paytable require a minimum of three.
Wild Revolver
When you catch two scatter symbols but fail to land a third to trigger the bonus round, there is a chance that the wild revolver bonus will activate. When this occurs, the two bonus symbols will transform into wilds, and up to five bullet holes will be shot at the reels replacing other symbols with additional wilds.
Bonus Bet
The ‘premium play’ button on the left of the reels is used to activate the game’s unique bonus bet. This will increase the cost of each spin by 50%, but the extra money certainly does not go to waste!
Any spin that results in a win of more than 1.6x the total bet will take you to a pick-me bonus featuring 12 badges – every single time! Most of these badges hide simple multipliers of up to 5x, but occasionally you will get lucky and reveal a set of free spins!
There’s only one problem here – achieving a win of more than 1.5x is a lot more difficult than it sounds! Only the top two symbols pay more than this for a single six of a kind hit, and they don’t show up as often as you might think. I still think it’s probably best to play with this feature enabled, but it certainly highlights just how badly the base game pays compared to the bonus round.
Gamble
If you opt to put the gamble feature on, then any wins over 5x in standard play or 1.6x in the bonus bet mode can be taken to the pie gamble. From here, you can win either bigger cash prizes or risk your current win for some free spins.
Wild Outlaws Slot Bonus Features
The free spin bonus round is triggered when three bonus symbols land on reels one, three, and five. Before the feature begins, each bonus symbol will spin to reveal a number of free spins between one and six. Once all three symbols have spun, their totals will be added to determine the total number of free spins.
Free Spins
The free spins feature begins with four additional reel positions added above reels two through five. These new positions are initially covered with jail bars, which can only be removed by landing a wild symbol directly below them. When this occurs, a duplicate of the wild will move up to the jail position, whilst the initial wild will become sticky for the duration of the bonus round.
Any further wilds that land on an unlocked reel will add 1x to the multiplier value of that reel. These multipliers stay in effect for the duration of the bonus round, making this an extremely lucrative feature if you can get lucky with enough wilds!
I was surprised to see that this feature can even be re-triggered by landing three further scatter symbols whilst the bonus is active. When this occurs, the bonus symbols will spin once more to determine the number of free spins to add to your remaining total.
Wild Outlaws Slot Review Final Thoughts
I struggled to get any decent hits out of the base game of Wild Outlaws, but I soon forgot about that once I made it to the bonus round! Sticky wild free spins are my favourite feature, and the ones offered here have as much potential as those in any other game out there. I can’t imagine we will have to wait long to see somebody post a maximum 10,000x jackpot video of this game after it goes on general release – an excellent release from Light & Wonder.
