Slot Overview
Wheel of Mictlan is a high-volatility video slot from Play’n GO that’s based on Aztec mythology and aggressive bonus mechanics, offering a massive maximum win potential of up to 40,000x! With expanding Wilds, Free Spins, and a Bonus Wheel round, there’s a lot going on, but is it too much, or can this dark mythological slot deliver? Read on to find out!
Theme & Design
Wheel of Mictlan is based on a Mesoamerican theme, and you’ll see a lot of theme-specific imagery, all of which centres on temples, carved stone idols, golden animal totems, and the presence of the god of death, Mictlantecuhtli.
It’s nicely designed, although it’s definitely a bit more “cartoon-like” than many of the games we’ve seen from Play’n Go recently. Of course, if you’re familiar with games like Aztec Empire or Aztec Powernudge, you’ll recognise this kind of theme immediately.

Wheel of Mictlan Gameplay & Bonus Features
Wheel of Mictlan runs on a five-reel, three-row layout with 10 fixed paylines. Wins are formed from left to right. You can bet from €0.05 up to €100 per spin, and the game boasts a default RTP of 96.20%, although, as is common with Play’n Go slots, lower configurations are available.
The game has a “Flip Wild”, and this substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter and Bonus icons. Now, when two or more Flip Wilds land, each has a 50% chance of transforming into a full-reel Expanded Wild. During the Free Spins, however, you only need to land one Flip Wild to have a chance of the expanding mechanic triggering.
The Free Spins themselves are triggered by landing three Scatter symbols in view, and doing so awards 10 free games. You can re-trigger these, up to a maximum of 140 in total, and during the bonus round all the base game mechanics remain active, with more frequent Bonus Wheel triggers (info below.)
Whenever you see the Bonus symbol landing on the reels, there’s a chance of triggering the Bonus Wheel game. Landing three symbols always triggers this feature. When triggered, one of four outcomes is awarded:
- A win multiplier that applies to all reel wins
- An instant cash prize
- Extra Free Spins (if inside the bonus)
- Entry to the Cashpot feature
The Cashpot feature takes you to a match-style mini-game that awards one of three fixed prizes. Here, you can win up to 5,000x your bet.
Pros
- Massive maximum win potential of 40,000x.
- Strong integrations between bonuses.
- Superb mythological theme with great graphics.
Cons
- The game is VERY volatile.
- The base game offers limited excitement without features.
- Not well-suited to low-risk players wanting a “chilled” game.
Wheel of Mictlan Slot Review Final Thoughts
Wheel of Mictlan is a pretty bold and impressive game that may not look like it but is insanely volatile. Its mechanics are designed to stack, allowing Wild expansions, Free Spins, and Bonus Wheel outcomes to interact pretty well with one another.
Of course, the slot’s real head-turner is the insane 40,000x maximum win potential, far higher than most Play’n Go slots, but, with this, of course, comes intense volatility and the potential for long dry spells.
For us, this is a game that’s well-suited to experienced players. Newcomers may find themselves busting through their bankroll quite quickly if they’re not careful with stake sizes; and, of course, the bonuses can be tricky to land, and there are no Bonus Buy options, so don’t expect to load the game up and waltz right into the features!
Still, it’s an impressive release from Play’n Go, and it’s definitely a slot we’ll be checking out for ourselves once it’s released!
