Game Overview
Zombies are big business these days – you only need to look at the success of The Walking Dead and its endless spinoffs to see that. Strangely, this zombie obsession has not spilled over into online slots just yet, but Hacksaw Gaming looks set to change that with the release of their new slot, Undead Fortune. This is a ten-line slot with a larger than average playfield, so it will be interesting to see how the paytable arranges the games 96.29%. The RTP was calculated as the result of ten billion rounds, which seems like a decent sample size to me! The maximum win recorded during this test was just over 10,000x the bet – not a bad night’s work if you ask me!
So how were these wins achieved? Let’s start by looking at the so-called DuelReels feature. First up, there are “Walking Duels” – these cause a fight with a monster, and if the monster is successfully defeated, a multiplier is applied to all pay lines that intersect with the duelling symbol. There are also “Expanding Duels”, which are triggered by hitting an expand symbol on reels two, three, four, or five. The expanding symbol is wild, and once again, a fight will begin with a monster – if you are successful, a multiplier will be applied to the VS symbol, and it will move towards the left. There are two bonus games too – “The Curse” and “The Tomb”, as well as a bonus buy facility allowing you to purchase all five possible features. Phew! That’s a lot of features, Hacksaw!

Undead Fortune Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I said in the opening paragraph that the zombie craze has not spread to online slots just yet, but there have been a handful of attempts during the past decade. Most recently, we saw “Zombie aPopalypse” – a cleverly titled slot that is part of the MultiPOP series of games by Avatar UX. Apart from online slots, the video game “The Last of Us” is widely regarded as one of the best video games ever made, and that is a zombie-inspired experience too. The sequel was apparently a bit of a letdown, although I have yet to give it a try, so don’t take that as gospel. As for TV and Film, we are still waiting to find out more about the supposed Walking Dead movies that are due to come out “soon”, and whilst the main Walking Dead show is set to end this year, multiple spinoffs are expected to take over in its place. Apparently, this is a move designed to get around AMC’s contracts with streaming sites such as Netflix, so it’s a bit cheeky really. Let’s get back to the slots, though, eh! Much more interesting than all this Walking Dead talk!
I was expecting great things from the paytable, considering that this is a ten-line game with a large playfield, but sadly I was a bit disappointed once I saw the figures. The highest paying monster symbol returns just 10x your bet for a full pay line of five-of-a-kind, whilst the remaining “high-paying” symbols are worth 8x, 6x, with two more at 4x your bet for all five. The royals look pretty good with their stone plate design, but they only pay between 1x and 1.5x for a full payline of any of them, so they aren’t really going to be of much interest… or so I thought! Once again, this game is not about the numbers on the regular paytable – it’s all about the multipliers and features.
The minimum bet is a low roller friendly, €0.10 per round, and there are lots of intervals between this and €10.00, after which things get a bit crazy with big jumps up to €100.00 per round. Don’t be crazy and bet that much for each spin – you’ll empty your bankroll quicker than you can blink!
Base Game & Modifiers
The regular game takes place on a 5×4 playfield, but I have to warn you, be prepared for a whole lot of dead spins. With only ten pay lines and a larger than average reel set, it’s evident that making a winning payline will be more difficult than usual. With that in mind, I was prepared for a few dead spins, but this game does deliver a lot of them. For this reason, I recommend keeping your bets smaller than usual whilst playing Undead Fortune.
Walking Duels
Look out for “VS” symbols landing on the reels with “Walk” written underneath. These symbols will activate a walking duel. Several of these symbols can land on a single spin, which will cause all of them to activate simultaneously.
Each VS Walk symbol triggers a battle with a monster, and if the monster is defeated, a multiplier will be applied to all of the symbols where the duel took place. All winning pay lines which intersect the duel symbols will have the multiplier applied to them, whilst any pay lines that intersect multiple duel symbols will receive a total multiplier that is the value of each symbol added together. The possible multipliers that can result from this feature are 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x 8x, 9x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 150x, and 200x.
Provided that at least one monster is defeated during this feature, a free re-spin will be awarded. The VS Duel symbol will become wild and move one reel to the left, and a new duel will take place once the reels have stopped. New VS Duel symbols can land during a re-spin, causing additional fights to take place. This process will repeat until the VS Duel symbol has moved off the screen on the left of the reels.
Expanding Duel Reels
There are also special VS symbols with the text “Expand” written underneath, and these trigger an alternative feature. Only one of these symbols can land on a single spin, unfortunately, but they do have a multiplier assigned to them and will expand to cover the entire reel where they land, so they are extremely valuable despite the fact you can only land one.
Just like the VS Duel symbols, the Expanding Duel symbols will cause a fight with a monster, which you need to win to activate the best part of the symbol’s capabilities. If you do win, the multiplier assigned to the Expanding VS symbol will be saved, and the duel symbol will then grow one reel to the left. The available multipliers range between 2x and 200x, with the interval numbers given in the previous section.
If you fail to defeat the monster in this mode, don’t worry, as whilst the expanding duel symbol will not grow to the left, it will at least apply its multiplier to all pay lines which intersect its position. This can mean that even a losing duel results in a win multiplied by 200x, which isn’t a bad consolation prize.
Undead Fortune Slot Bonus Features
You might think that the duel symbols are the main features of Undead Fortune, but you would be wrong! The game has even more feature goodness to tell you about, so let’s dig into the real bonus rounds!
The Curse
This feature is triggered by hitting three “Curse” symbols during the base game. If you land one or two curse symbols, these will turn into wilds, which, again, is not a bad consolation prize for not hitting the bonus round.
The Curse is effectively a free spins feature, which awards ten spins with an increased chance of hitting both the Walking VS and Expand VS symbols. Indeed, I found that these symbols landed on almost every spin whilst I was testing this feature, which is cool, but it’s a shame that the free spins do not have a multiplier attached to them or anything like that.
The Tomb
Hitting three “Tomb” symbols during the base game will trigger this unique feature which takes you to a completely different reel set that contains only Tomb VS symbols, Epic VS symbols, Unlock symbols, and Golden Unlock symbols.
Each reel has a multiplier specified above it, increasing each time a monster is defeated on that reel. If a VS battle ends in failure on any reel, it will be tied up and unusable for the duration of the bonus round unless you can hit the unlock symbols, which will make your locked reels usable again.
This feature will continue until all five reels become locked, after which you will collect all of the multipliers specified at the top of the reels. While testing the game, I managed to get multipliers of more than 300x on all five reels, giving me a total win of over 1,500x my bet. Not bad for a 90 minute session of play, I’d say!
Bonus Buy
The bonus buy facility, if available in your region, has five options:
- Bonus Feature Spins – This is effectively a bonus bet rather than a bonus buy, as it will increase your wager to 3x the usual value in return for making it 5x more likely that you will hit one of the two main bonus games. 3x your bet for 5x more odds? That sounds like a good deal, but it is expensive, so be careful if you choose to use it.
- Walking Duel Feature Spins – Again, more of a bonus bet – this will guarantee that at least one Walk VS symbol lands on every spin. This is a highly volatile bet and costs 10x the regular spin amount. I believe these style of features are UKGC compliant, which may be why Hacksaw has included them.
- Expanding Duel Feature Spins – Another bonus bet style option, which makes every spin cost 50x the usual amount! Wow, things really are getting nuts now! If you activate this option, it will guarantee that an Expanding VS symbol lands on every spin. The developer calls the variance of this mode “Extreme”. I would call it “Insane”, myself!
- The Curse – Finally, a regular bonus buy option. For 100x your bet, you can get yourself a Curse free spins bonus round, where you have a very high chance of hitting VS symbols. I would probably go for this rather than the previous three options, but that’s just me.
- The Tomb – You can also pay 200x the regular bet to play the more generous Tomb bonus round, which is quite expensive, but I made a profit almost every time I tried this option, so it may be a good buy. It is costly, though, so use it at your own risk.
Undead Fortune Slot Review Final Thoughts
Well, that was a long one, wasn’t it? Undead Fortune is a great slot, but the number of dead spins in the base game makes it dull when you can’t even enable the fast spin option. The features do drop very regularly in the bonus rounds, but in the base game, they can be quite rare. I never got bored whilst this slot, and I would recommend it, but it is certainly far from perfect.
