Game Overview
I don’t know about you, but when someone mentions provider Hacksaw Gaming, the first things that come to mind are exciting, high-volatility slot games based on crazy themes with great bonus features. So, you can imagine my shock when I was asked to review one of their releases, only to load up the demo to find a very simple looking card game! Apparently, it’s one of several efforts from their Dare2Win series, which sees Hacksaw step back from the world of extreme spinning reel action into a calmer, more traditional gambling environment. Let’s unwrap this title further and see what exactly we are dealing with. The game is titled Twenty-One, and it features an RTP of 96% and a potential maximum win of 1,500x.
Although it’s straightforward graphically, it’s immediately apparent that this is a Hacksaw game through their signature design and the text type used. Set on a dark blue background, which reminds me of a felt casino table, is a series of three standard playing cards lying face down, and above this is a paytable which displays win values. That’s as complicated as it gets looks wise, so, how do we play and win on this game then? Well, this is where things get slightly more interesting. The object of the game is for the sum of your cards to equal between 16-21, and there are different win values for each of the numbers within that range, with 21 being the most valuable. The player has the choice to play the game with between 2-7 cards, and adjusting the number of cards in play will not change the objective of scoring between 16-21, but it will make it less likely in certain instances.
If you could do with a break from the high adrenaline and flashing lights of modern slot play and would like to chill out on something more relaxing, this game could be a great option. Why not check it out yourself? The Twenty-One demo slot is available to play for free below!
Twenty-one Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
If you’re unfamiliar with Hacksaw Gaming’s Dare2Win series and enjoy table-based games, then you’re in for a treat, as there are several other games within this genre to enjoy. For example, Hi-Low features a high RTP of 98% and a potential maximum win of 5,000x. As the name suggests, you’ll need to choose whether the next card drawn will be higher or lower, and the value of the card displayed will affect the risk and, subsequently, the payout value accordingly. Another great game in this area is Plinko, which has a brilliant RTP of 98.98% and a maximum win of 3,843x. It is slightly less skill based, as it just involves dropping balls from the top of a board that will then fall through a series of pegs into trays of varying value at the bottom. Make sure to check those games out, but first of all, let’s have a deeper look into the values that can be won on Twenty-One and how we can go about winning them.
How much you can win on Twenty-One will vary hugely by the amount of risk you are willing to take. That risk comes in the form of how many cards you choose to play with, and it’s possible to select from between 2-7. Whatever your selection may be, the aim of the game is for the cards to total a sum of between 16-21, and anything outside of this will result in a losing round. The exact payout values are as follows:
- 2 Cards – 16: 1.2x, 17: 1.3x, 18: 1.5x, 19: 1.6x, 20: 3.3x, 21: 5x.
- 3 Cards – 16: 0.1x, 17: 0.6x, 18: 1.5x, 19: 1.7x, 20: 3x, 21: 5x.
- 4 Cards – 16: 1.5x, 17: 2.4x, 18: 3x, 19: 3.5x, 20: 5.4x, 21: 10x.
- 5 Cards – 16: 4.1x, 17: 7.7x, 18: 12x, 19: 12.7x, 20: 12.9x, 21: 40x.
- 6 Cards – 16: 23x, 17: 43x, 18: 46x, 19: 85x, 20: 100x, 21: 200x.
- 7 Cards – 16: 100x, 17: 300x, 18: 375x, 19: 1,000x, 20: 1,000x, 21: 1,500x
Having a wide range of stake options can be very important in a game like this, so it’s pleasing to see that Hacksaw have provided a lot of choice here. Available values start from a low of €0.10 and rise to a high of €100.00, with plenty of well-placed bets within this range. This game seems fairly low volatility on the 2, 3, and 4 card options, but beware of increasing the stake too high with more cards than that in play, as it could be a dangerous, high volatility beast!
Twenty-one-gameplay
Getting the fun started on Twenty-One is a simple affair. Once the game has loaded, just select a number of cards and a stake option from the menu bar and press bet. The chosen number of cards will then be turned over, their values revealed, and if their sum is between 16-21, you will win the associated prize from the paytable. Drawing over or under this number range will result in no win. The total value of the cards is calculated in the following manner:
- Cards with the numbers 1-10: The value is the same as the number displayed on the card.
- J, Q, and K: These are all valued at 10.
- A: The value of this card will either be 1 or 11, depending on which is most beneficial to the player.
Twenty-one Bonus Features
Unfortunately, no bonus rounds or features can be triggered in Twenty-One.
Pros
- It is a simple to-play, well presented game.
- The option to choose how many cards are active allows the player to change volatility.
- There is a lot of variety in stake options.
Cons
- Maximum win and RTP are lower than many other games in the Dare2Win series.
Twenty-one Review Final Thoughts
As someone who predominantly reviews slot games, it’s important for me to remember that this is a table-based game when scoring it. When comparing it to similar online casino card games, this is a very solid effort from Hacksaw. It has a clean, attractive design and is very simple to play. The option to choose how many cards are active affects the gameplay massively, allowing the player to move between risk/reward levels easily, and this introduces another dynamic to the gameplay. There are also plenty of stake options available, and this ensures players can try to hit a larger prize on a lower stake before moving back to a bigger stake on a lower volatility card number selection if they wish to do so. The only downside for me is that the RTP and max win are lower than many of the other Hacksaw games in this genre, but I won't hold that against them too much as they are still at a respectable level.
