Slot Overview

Tropicool 5 is the latest instalment in Elk Studios’ “Tropicool” series, and this high-variance game is played on a 6×5 grid with the series’ signature Cool Reel (a two-row feature strip), avalanche-style drops, and a pile of transforming/upgrade mechanics, including sticky Fixed Wilds, Row Swaps, Mystery Reveals, and Bonuses! With a huge maximum win potential of 25,000x, it’s clearly designed for players wanting volatility and action, but is it any good? And can you really ‘keep your cool’ when playing? Read on for the full Demoslot review!

Theme & Design

Tropicool 5 continues ELK’s “tropical holiday in the wrong climate” look, and it’s not the 5th instalment in the series, with previous titles like Tropicool 4 and Tropicool 3 all proving popular with players.

Like the instalments before it, Tropicool 5 features juicy-looking fruits, beachy animals, and colourful cocktails, and it’s finished with a frosty, ice-cube-like presentation that makes the grid feel like it’s literally been frozen over. The Cool Reel sits above the main grid and plays a core part in the game’s overall mechanics, and we’ll talk more about this later.

Now, a word of warning: Tropicool 5 can feel pretty chaotic, especially when the giant 2×2 symbols land. Still, we feel that Elk Studios has done a pretty solid job of balancing things out, and while there’s a lot going on, it’s easy enough to follow once you get the hang of the game’s basic mechanics.

Tropicool 5 Gameplay & Bonus Features

Tropicool 5 is played on a 6×5 layout, and the game uses a 15,625-ways-to-win mechanic. You can bet between €0.10 and €100 per spin, and RTP varies depending on operator configuration. The different options are 94.00%, 92.00%, 90.00%, and 87.00%.

Like the previous Tropicool releases, the game’s core loop is designed around drop symbols and avalanches. Winning symbols pay and then are removed, letting new symbols fall down. This is also where the game’s Cool Reel comes into play; its symbol shifts along each cascade, and any functional icons above empty cells can then drop onto the main grid, which is how the special modifiers are triggered.

Now, there’s a huge amount of action, and first, you’ll see Fixed Wilds. When Wilds land, they lock, with “charges” remaining on the grid for a set number of wins before disappearing. Any mystery symbols that land reveal the same symbols once all symbols have dropped, while golden symbols introduce win multipliers that scale by row position. Crucially, columns add their multipliers, and different columns multiply together, which is how big wins can be formed in the base.

Another feature is the Row Swap. This can turn an ordinary-looking drop into a full-row conversion, replacing symbols in a row to create new wins. While eggs can also randomly turn into Bird Wilds, and if there’s a space in the column, the size of the created Wilds is scaled based on the number of empty symbols below.

Tropicool 5’s main bonus game is triggered by landing 3+ bonus symbols in view. You then receive 6, 9, 12, or 15 free games. During the bonus, the Cool Reel can also add extra symbols and modifiers, including extra bonus symbols and multiplier adders that increase a global win multiplier. Fixed Wilds continue to lock in place, and basically, this bonus is all about getting as many modifiers to drop down onto the grid as possible!

X-iter

Tropicool 5 includes ELK’s X-iter system, letting you pay to enter selected modes directly. Options include Bonus Hunt, Mega Hunt, Fixed Wild, Buy Bonus and Super Bonus, with costs ranging from 3x (for Bonus Hunt) up to 500x for the Super Bonus.

Pros

  • Massive maximum win potential of 25,000x.
  • X-iter offers multiple paid entry points.
  • Cool Reel + lots of modifiers produces constant action.

Cons

  • The highest RTP is just 94%, which is very low.
  • Tropicool 5 is a very volatile game.
  • There is a LOT going on; can feel messy until you really understand the game.

Tropicool 5 Slot Review Final Thoughts

Tropicool 5 is unapologetically an ELK “machine slot”: rather than aiming for the simplicity many providers are trying to produce today, this game is anything but! Pretty much all of the game’s action is designed around the Cool Reel + Modifier mechanics, and there’s so much going on, so there are plenty of ways to swap, upgrade, and multiply your way to big wins, even in the base game.

For us, volatility is the defining factor. The base game can look like it’s action-packed, even though, a lot of the time, it doesn’t actually pay very well. Plus, the game’s top RTP setting of just 94% is way too low in our opinion; it means most win potential is likely locked up in the bonus rounds, which can cause the base game to feel incredibly dry at times.

However, the maximum win potential is solid, at 25,000x, and if you enjoy complex, feature-rich slots and don’t mind quite a steep learning curve to familiarise yourself with the game (and can look past the below-average RTP), then it’s definitely a decent game. Just take some time to read through the rules, and perhaps play in demo mode for a bit before committing any of your own cash!
