Game Overview

Slot studio Hacksaw Gaming’s Toshi Ways Club is the sequel to their hit Toshi Video Club, and it once again plunges you into the neon-soaked world of futuristic Tokyo, fusing cyberpunk visuals. The game introduces a brand new Hackways system, with up to 1-million ways-to-win, and with a maximum win potential of 10,000x, it looks like it’s worth a spin; is it? Let’s find out.

Theme & Design

Like the original Toshi Video Club, Toshi Ways Club uses the strange-looking Japanese, almost “flat” design that we saw in the original. In the top right-hand corner of the screen you can see the number of “Hackways” in play, and this really reminds us of what we saw in early Big Time Gaming releases like Bonanza: it’s unique, and for Hacksaw Gaming, we feel very much needed.

Sure, it’s not the most intricate or complex design, but then, neither was the original. There’s not a huge amount going on, but we do like how the premium symbols have orange colouring; this really makes them stand out, especially against the plain and somewhat dull reel backdrop the game sits on.

Toshi Ways Club Gameplay & Features

Toshi Ways Club plays across 6 reels and 10 rows, using the developer’s new Hackways engine rather than fixed paylines. By default, the game offers an RTP of 96.09%, although as with all of their releases today, the game offers lower RTP configurations too: 94.37% and 92.46%. You can bet between €0.10 and €100 per spin.

At its core, Toshi Ways Club revolves around Flash Frames and two special symbols: Swap and Slicing Swap. Now, when a winning combo occurs, the positions involved with the win will be highlighted with a Flash Frame. These stick to the grid, and all of the winning symbols inside a Flash Frame reveal new symbols.

When a Swap Symbol lands, it replaces itself and every active Flash Frame on the grid with a single matching symbol. The Slicing Swap Symbol transforms all Flash Frames into one matching symbol, but it also divides them into the smallest possible symbol size, which is how you’re able to unlock up to 1,000,000 Hackways on a single spin!

There are three main bonus rounds in the game, the first of which is called Retro Reboot and is triggered by landing 3 FS scatter symbols. You then receive 10 free spins, with an increased chance of landing Swap Symbols.

The second bonus round is the Suckr Punch feature, triggered by landing 4 FS scatter symbols. Doing so also awards 10 free spins, but here, only Slicing Swap symbols can land. Finally, there’s Tokyo Data Drift, triggered by landing 5 FS scatter symbols. Here, you win 10 free spins with a guaranteed Swap or Slicing Swap symbol on each spin!

Bonus Buy

Like most Hacksaw Gaming releases today, Toshi Ways Club contains a few Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins options. BonusHunt FeatureSpins increase your base game stake by 3x but make it 5x more likely that you’ll land a bonus round naturally, while Toshi FeatureSpins cost 100x but guarantee a win and a Swap symbol on each spin.

The Retro Reboot bonus round can be purchased for 100x, while the Suckr Punch bonus round can be purchased for 200x.

Pros

  • Win up to 10,000x.
  • Sticky Swap symbols create up to 1 million ways-to-win.
  • Three different free spins modes

Cons

  • Base game is very volatile.
  • Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins unavailable in some regions/countries

Toshi Ways Club Slot Review Final Thoughts

Toshi Ways Club is a bold sequel to the original Toshi Video Club that finally introduces something new to Hacksaw Gaming’s slots than the payline mechanic they’ve relied upon for so long. The new Hackways mechanic is clever and unpredictable, and we expect to see it a lot in the provider’s future releases.

The gameplay in Toshi Ways Club is pretty decent, too, especially as there’s always an element of unpredictability on each spin. The Flash Frames and Swap/Slicing Swap symbols create enough action to keep you engaged, and if you manage to get the number of ways-to-win high enough, you really can hit some monster wins.

We don’t love the fact that the maximum win potential remains at 10,000x, as this slightly makes the 1-million ways-to-win mechanic a bit gimmicky. Sure, you can unlock a huge number of ways, but if you truly were to unlock all 1-million and hit a big win; well, you’re going to be capped by the maximum win potential quite a bit.

Still, if you’re a fan of the original Toshi Video Club or enjoy Hacksaw’s more experimental grid mechanics, this new release is definitely worth a spin!
