Slot Overview

Thurisaz is a Norse-inspired video slot from Kitsune Studios, and it offers cascading reels, frame-based multipliers, and expanding Dropping Wilds, all within a 5×5 grid layout. Built around rune symbols and a stormy mythological setting, Thurisaz offers a maximum win potential of up to 10,000x, but is it any good? Does it live up to its dramatic presentation? Read on to find out!

Theme & Design

Thurisaz draws heavily from Norse mythology, with its name taken from a powerful rune associated with giants, storms, and raw force. The visuals of the game are pretty dark and atmospheric, and you’ll see a stone-carved reel frame that’s filled with runes, storm clouds, and flashes of lightning in the background.

Being a relatively new game developer, Kitsune Studios is working hard to release games that capture players’ attention, and Thurisaz, visually, is fine. It’s not as detailed as some of their previous releases, however, like The Library or Evil Dozen.

Thurisaz Gameplay & Bonus Features

Thurisaz is played on a 5-reel, 5-row grid with 19 fixed paylines. The game uses a cascading reels mechanic, where winning symbols are removed and replaced from above. The game can be played at stakes between €0.10 and €100 per spin, and its default RTP sits at 96.3%.

At the core of the gameplay is the Frame Multiplier mechanic. Every winning spin creates glowing frames beneath the symbols involved in that win. When a framed position is hit again by another win, it activates as a 2x multiplier. Each additional hit on that same framed position increases the multiplier by +1, up to a maximum of 5x.

Now, if multiple framed positions are involved in the same win, their multipliers are added together, and this is where there’s some decent win potential in the base game. You’ll also see Dropping Wilds. When one of these lands, it expands downwards to the bottom of the reel. The number of positions it covers determines what multiplier value it can have, up to 5x. These Dropping Wild multipliers can also stack with Frame Multipliers.

In the base game, Frame Multipliers reset between spins, but they don’t during the Free Spins Bonus. The feature is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view, and doing so awards 10, 12, or 14 spins, respectively. Frame Multipliers don’t reset, and Dropping Wilds also appear more frequently. You can also win additional spins by landing Scatter symbols during the bonus round.

FeatureSpins/Bonus Buy

Thurisaz includes several Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins options:

  • Bonushunt FeatureSpins: Costs 3x and makes each spin five times more likely to trigger Thurisaz Free Spins.
  • Dropping Wild FeatureSpins: Costs 50x and guarantees at least one Dropping Wild symbol on every spin.
  • Thurisaz Free Spins Buy: Costs 100x for instant entry into the Thurisaz Free Spins.

Pros

  • Win up to 10,000x.
  • Strong multiplier mechanic; Frames + Dropping Wilds.
  • Multiplier Frames don’t reset during the free spins.

Cons

  • High volatility can result in quite a quiet base game.
  • Mechanics aren’t the most original in the world.
  • Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins available in some markets.

Thurisaz Slot Review Final Thoughts

Thurisaz is only the 6th release from Kitsune Studios, and like all of their other games released so far, it’s powered by Hacksaw Gaming’s aggregation platform, so the layout and user interface looks almost identical to Hacksaw’s own games. Thurisaz isn’t the most exciting game in the world, but it offers quite a straightforward, deliberate selection of bonuses and features, and there’s some decent action in the base game thanks to the Multiplier Frames and Dropping Wilds.

Unusually for Hacksaw-powered slots, Thurisaz only contains one Free Spins form; there are no enhancements for landing additional Scatters (besides getting a few more spins), but this makes the game simpler to understand; this may appeal more to casual players and those who don’t like the multitude of complex features found in many slots today.

Thurisaz is still volatile, however, and it’s common to see lengthy dry spells in the base game. Bonuses can pay, but you need a good combination of Multiplier Frames and Dropping Wilds working together to get towards the game’s maximum win potential of 10,000x. So, overall, Thurisaz is a fairly decent game that offers familiar mechanics, decent win potential, with a Norse mythological theme. It won’t suit everyone, but it’s a fairly enjoyable slot, we thought.
