Game Overview
I was writing about an online slot recently and remembered thinking a lot about how rarely you come across a genuinely adult-themed online slot. Mancala Gaming’s “The Twin Wins Mystery” isn’t quite what I would describe as 18+, but it definitely has a creepy, horror movie vibe to it – just look at the dolls on the paytable if you want to see an example! The game has fairly typical stats – 25 pay lines, the 95% RTP that seems common to all of Mancala’s games, and a top jackpot payout of 5,740x your bet – not the highest on the market, but plenty to keep most players interested.
The game features an enormous wild symbol that randomly shows up covering the entirety of the first two reels, whilst the main bonus round is a free spin feature that can award up to 100 spins if you hit all five trigger symbols. The bonus round also has a “Multiplier Pins” feature, allowing you to collect special pins in the base game between bonus rounds. The longer it takes to hit a feature, the more pins you will collect and the better your bonus round should be – theoretically, of course!

The Twin Wins Mystery Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The developer describes the theme of this game as being “Halloween/Mystic”, which isn’t quite the way I would describe it. Aside from the strange dolls, the rest of the symbols include a book with a pentagram on it, the triangle symbol, which I believe is associated with the Illuminati, a teapot, and a hand mirror … I guess you could call those things mystical in a way. Still, creepy/horror-inspired feels much more accurate to me. That’s a good thing, too – there are plenty of genuinely Halloween-themed online slots, but far fewer with this dark and eerie vibe.
The paytable doesn’t look half bad either – the top-paying symbol resembles what I believe to be a “Versace Egg”? It’s a piece of artwork that looks like an American Football wrapped in gold, a strangely ambiguous choice that somehow fits with the rest of the symbols and happens to pay a very chunky 1,000x your bet if you should score a full payline of five-of-a-kind. It doesn’t stop there, either – the second-placed teapot symbol also pays 400x your stake for a full payline, suggesting that neither of these symbols will be showing up very often. The Illuminati symbol takes third place with a return of 100x your bet for five-of-a-kind, whilst the spell book pays 40x, and the hand mirror drops this to 20x your stake. The lower-paying royal symbols have returns of between 4x and 10x your bet for all five, which might not be much but still compares favourably with most other online slots that feature 25 pay lines. After playing the game for some time, I came to realise that all of the five-of-a-kind combinations are somewhat rare, which balances out the higher-than-average returns attached to them.
The Twin Wins Mystery online slot has a relatively transparent betting range compared to many other Mancala games. The lower bound sits at €0.25 per spin, which works out as a penny per line and makes perfect sense. Don’t expect to be selecting how many lines you wish to play; however – just like almost every online slot released these days, no such option exists. The maximum bet per spin is €22.50, which should be more than enough for any sensible player. Not sensible? I’m sure you can find a Megaways slot that will let you bet €250 per spin if you look hard enough!
Base Game & Modifiers
We’ve already talked about most aspects of the base game, but let’s have a summary of each of the elements that have been mentioned so far. The Twin Wins Mystery online slot uses 25 fixed paylines, a standard-sized 5×3 playfield, and awards wins for hitting three or matching symbols on a line from left to right. Wilds appear only on reels one and two, and there is a single free spins bonus round to look forward to aside from the main game.
Wild Twins Symbols
There are three different versions of the “wild twins”, all of which only show up on reels one and two. First are the “regular” wild twins, a typical substitution symbol that shows up surrounded by a golden love heart. Then you have the “multiplier reward” wild twins, which have a silver love heart frame and will grant you a pin that will go in the cushion to the left of the reels until you hit a bonus round.
Finally, the “giant” wild twins symbol only appears during the bonus round but takes up a substantial 2×3 area on the reels. If this symbol lands partially off-screen, it will snap back into place to cover the entirety of the reels – even if you only have a single visible row beforehand.
Multiplier Pins Feature
There are three different types of multiplier pin, represented by the circle, triangle, and star symbols, shown underneath the skull-shaped pincushion on the left of the reels. After a while, you are sure to notice a definite difference in frequency between each of the pins, and you would be right – the circle refers to a 2x multiplier pin, whilst the triangle indicates the 4x multiplier pin and the star, a 6x multiplier pin. It’s no surprise then to learn that the star pin is the most infrequent, but these pins do not trigger the bonus round as I thought they did for a long time when I began testing this game – that part is handled by the scatter symbols described below.
The Twin Wins Mystery Slot Free Spins Feature
The free spins feature of The Twin Wins Mystery online slot is triggered by hitting three or more of the scatter ragdolls during the base game. At that point, all of the pins you have collected in the cushion to the left of the reels can be placed at positions on reels three, four, and five. The scatter symbols have no payout of their own, but you do at least win extra free spins for hitting more than three scatters – its ten free spins for three symbols, 40 free spins for four, and a whopping 100 free spins for all five triggering scatters.
After triggering the free spins bonus round, there are some important differences between this part of the game and the base game. Firstly, reels one and two now become locked together – the result shown on both reels is always identical during the bonus round.
You also have the giant stacked wild twins symbol, which only appears during the free spins feature. If the giant stacked twins are visible anywhere on reels one and two at the end of a free spin, then the symbol will nudge to occupy the entirety of the first two reels, giving you a much higher chance of hitting bigger wins.
Furthermore, you also have a ragdoll symbol that only appears during the free spin bonus round. If the ragdoll should land, it will instantly change into a voodoo doll and then begin to move across reels three, four, and five. Ideally, you want the voodoo doll to move through a position where you placed one of your scatter pins before the bonus round commenced, as this will then apply the total multiplier pinned to that space to your winnings for that spin.
I didn’t realise until quite late in writing this review that the multiplier pins you place do not do anything unless they happen to meet the voodoo doll symbol. That is a real gamechanger as far as I am concerned. These symbols do not show up that often, and it is possible to make it through an entire bonus round without a voodoo doll meeting any of your multiplier pins.
The free spins are still more profitable without the multiplier pins than the base game, but only if you can land lots of the giant wild twins symbols. My best results from this feature were disappointing, and that’s being generous – I certainly never saw a five-of-a-kind of the top two symbols which pay out 400x and 1,000x your stake, respectively!
The Twin Wins Mystery Slot Review Final Thoughts
This game looks like it should have a lot going for it at first – especially the huge wins listed on the paytable. Unfortunately, my results were extremely disappointing after playing the game for a while during testing for this review. Hitting anything more than a three-of-a-kind combination seems to be extremely rare outside of the bonus round, and I only managed to break 100x by bet inside the bonus round on one occasion.
I think I was probably a little unlucky, but The Twin Wins Mystery shows that just because a game has an impressive paytable, it does not guarantee you will end up with impressive winnings! It’s probably still worth a look, though – I had a lot of fun trying this slot, which counts for a lot.
