Game Overview
Last time I knew, Microgaming held the official license for Terminator-based online slots, but I guess the situation has changed. This one seems largely based on the original film, although some of the Arnie artwork was undoubtedly borrowed from the second movie… which is a good thing, as that was obviously the best of the bunch! The Terminator from Inspired Gaming is a 20-payline game with a 94.50% RTP, and whilst there’s no mention of a cap on the maximum win, it doesn’t seem to be particularly high variance. I’d honestly be surprised if it’s possible to win 5,000x your stake on this one.
There are two sets of wild symbols, the second of which is used as a trigger for the ‘Win & Spin’ feature, as well as a base game modifier that is activated by landing a fully stacked symbol on the first reel. Most of the other features branch off the aforementioned ‘Win & Spin’ bonus, which is vaguely reminiscent of the bonus round from the hugely popular Money Train series of online slots. Unfortunately, we don’t get any free spins or anything like that in this one, so don’t expect a bonus buy facility either.
Which is your favourite Terminator film? I know there are more than a few fans of the original horror-inspired movie out there – if that includes you, why not check out our free demo slot of The Terminator – available to play below?
The Terminator Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The Terminator films eventually went on to become a hugely popular action franchise, but the original movie was undoubtedly inspired by the horror craze of the 1980s. That makes this slot comparable to machines such as Horror Hotel and Hacksaw’s Bloodthirst, although neither benefitted from such a high-profile license. I’m honestly quite surprised to find that it’s Inspired who has managed to score this one – things have all gone a bit wrong for The Terminator since the awful Dark Fate, but it’s still one of the most recognisable film licenses that any developer could effort hope to acquire. With that in mind, you would expect them to devote their best efforts to making an awesome release… so how has that gone?
The most valuable symbols on the paytable are the wild and Arnie, which share equal returns of 20x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. The Terminator endoskeleton is worth 10x the bet for all five symbols, followed by Sarah Connor at 5x and Kyle Reece at 4x. There are five more low-paying royal symbols, all of which share equal returns of 2x the total stake for a five of a kind combination. All symbols appear stacked on the reels, which should make it possible to score a full screen of any symbol under amazingly lucky conditions. Should that occur with the highest-paying wild or Arnie symbols, the player would receive 800x their total bet back in winnings.
The minimum/maximum available bets The Terminator offers are €0.10 and €100.00, respectively, and there’s no shortage of intermediate bets available for those who wish to play between the two extremes.
Base Game & Modifiers
The playfield used in The Terminator has five columns of four rows each, which is a little larger than the traditional 5×3 layout used in many other video slots. Lots of online slots use layouts such as this nowadays, but the issue here is that there are still just 20 active paylines – it’s very likely that you will end up hitting lots of combinations that look like they should award a win yet do not. The stacked symbols help with this, but you’ll still need three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left to score a win.
Respin Modifier
If any of the four character symbols land fully in view on the first reel, the base game modifier will be activated. At that point, the first reel and all other matching symbols will become fixed in place, and the remaining positions will automatically re-spin. Should any more matching symbols land during the re-spin, those will also become locked in place, after which the whole process will repeat indefinitely until the entire screen is filled or no more matching symbols land in view.
The Terminator Slot Bonus Features
The main bonus round is a three-spin-like feature triggered by hitting six money symbols during the base game. If you manage to hit more than six triggering symbols, you’ll be given an extra spin for each additional symbol.
Win & Spin Bonus
The main bonus round works similarly to the base game modifier, except now the standard reels are replaced with a new set that contains only money symbols and blank spaces. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll spot the terminator trail, which shows the android three steps behind you – if any new symbols land on the current spin, you will progress along the trail where extra prizes can be won, and the grand wheel can be triggered. If not, the terminator moves one step closer to you… let’s not imagine what happens if he gets hold of you!
In this mode, each money symbol has a value of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or one of the three ‘jackpots’ – I put that part in quotes, as the MINI, MINOR, and MAJOR are only worth 10x, 20x, and 30x your total bet respectively.
Pros
- It is based on an extremely popular movie franchise.
- Excellent presentation that does the license justice.
Cons
- Very little in the way of special features.
- The ‘jackpots’ are a bit low – 30x the bet for the MAJOR? Come on, Inspired; you can do better than that!
- Lower than average RTP of just 94.50%
Final Thoughts
I was hoping for a whole lot more from such a big-name license – Microgaming definitely did a better job with their T2 online slot a decade or so ago! Still, this one does look good and is worth a few spins as a curiosity – just don’t expect to be playing it for more than a week or two.
