Game Overview
Okay, I’m a tad confused – is he a knight, or is he a king? I guess the title implies that he is the king of the knights, but if that were the case, wouldn’t that just make him the king? I’m probably overthinking this again, aren’t I? The bottom line is that Pragmatic Play’s latest online slot is named ‘The Knight King’, and I guess it’s simply not our place to question whether that is somewhat ridiculous! Knights are a little old-fashioned nowadays, so I think there is at least some logic to the fact that this is a rather ‘old school’ online slot! As for the headline numbers, there are 20 paylines, a 96.05% RTP, and a maximum win of 5,000x the total bet.
What makes a slot ‘old school’, anyway? First, the wild symbols have an enormous payout compared to the rest of the items on the paytable – that’s definitely something you don’t see every day in other modern slots! Anything else? The Knight King has a somewhat limited feature set by Pragmatic Play standards – the base game includes a ‘money symbol’ feature, but apart from that, there is just a single free spin bonus round to keep you entertained as you spin. Ah, I almost forgot – there’s a bonus buy facility available, too, if you are one of the lucky folks who aren’t prohibited from using such apparent works of the devil!
What do you think? Is he the King of the Knights or just a pretender to the throne? Perhaps you should give our free demo slot of The Knight King a few spins before you decide! It’s available to play below.
The Knight King Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Not everybody is aware that knights still exist to this day – when the British monarch awards ‘Order of the British Empire (OBE)’ titles to people who have made an outstanding contribution to some area of society, those are, in fact, knighthoods. Of course, being a knight in 2023 doesn’t involve going into battle on horseback, jousting with lances, or wearing ridiculous chain mail armour – which is either a good or bad thing depending on the exact recipient of the honour. You won’t find many slots based around this modern interpretation of a knighthood though – games such as Black Knight, Avalon Gold, and Templar Tumble wouldn’t be very exciting if their characters were nothing more than a typical member of the House of Lords, would they?
I mentioned in the opening paragraphs that this game featured a huge hit on its paytable – this is assigned to the game’s shield wild symbol and will pay you 300x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. Unfortunately, the rest of the paytable does not fare so well – the dragon head is the most valuable regular symbol with a return of 7.5x for all five symbols, whilst the Knight King himself will only pay you 6x for a full payline, not a very ‘kingly’ sum. There are two more high-paying symbols; the female character is worth 5x for all five of her symbols, whilst the horse is less valuable at 3.5x for a five-of-a-kind combination. I think it goes without saying that there isn’t much in it as far as the separation between the ‘high’ and ‘low’ paying symbols – five aces are worth 2.5x the total bet, and it’s all downhill from there until you hit 1x for a full line of jacks or tens. In my opinion, these are not great numbers, but don’t click away just yet – the ‘special money symbol’ feature may save the day!
Of course, there’s no problem as far as the betting range is concerned in this game – this is one thing that Pragmatic Play always gets right. The lowest permitted wager is €0.20, and you can play any multiple of this that you wish until you hit the maximum limit of €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
The Knight King uses the classic video slot layout of five reels with three rows each, along with 20 fixed paylines that are active on every spin. The developer scored the game five out of five for volatility, so be prepared for a long wait between winning spins. If you are lucky, the amount should be bigger than a comparable low-volatility game. The paytable certainly didn’t sound like that of a high volatility game though, so what’s going on here? It’s all down to one key feature we have yet to discuss – read on…
Special Money Symbols
Randomly at the start of any spin, one of the paying symbols – including the wild – may be selected as the special money symbol for the current round. When this occurs, the selected symbol is assigned a new value from a predefined set and becomes a scatter-pay symbol.
During the base game, the possible values assigned to the special money symbol are 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x, 15x, or 20x, the total bet. In addition, symbols can appear stacked on the reels, which could theoretically mean a 300x top-up to your regular line wins on the best possible spin.
The Knight King Slot Bonus Features
Bonus scatter symbols appear on reels one, three, and five only, and you’ll need all three of them to trigger a set of seven free spins. Whilst the free spins are in play, the scatter symbols move to reels two and four instead.
Free Spins
Before each free spins feature begins, a symbol will be selected from the paytable as the special money symbol for the entire bonus round. This works the same way as the Special Money Symbols feature of the base game, except that the chosen symbol will be active on every free spin.
If a regular symbol is selected to be the special money symbol, the maximum value that it can be assigned during free spins is limited to 7x the total bet. If the wild is selected, the maximum value increases to the same 20x available during the base game.
Every time the special money symbol lands during a free spin, its value will be increased for the following spin. The limits mentioned above still apply, but this does at least mean you stand a good chance of reaching the maximum value at some point during your bonus round. Hitting two scatter symbols on reels two and four will add four free spins to your remaining total.
Bonus Buy
If you would rather not wait for the free spins to trigger naturally, The Knight King offers the choice to purchase a set of seven spins at the cost of 80x the normal price per spin. This seems like good value, and I was surprised at just how often I made a profit from this option whilst testing the game for this review.
The Knight King Slot Review Final Thoughts
The regular paytable isn’t all that impressive, but the special money symbol feature just about manages to make this game worth a look. It’s not Pragmatic Play’s best work of late – the developer has published some real corkers during the first weeks of 2023 – but I’ll still be giving it a few spins when it goes live during the next week or two.
