Game Overview

Slot studio Blueprint Gaming is back with yet another “The Goonies” instalment, this time, with The Goonies: Quest for Treasure 2. This 4,096-ways-to-win game offers jackpot chests, free spins, progression trails, and a maximum win potential of 10,000x. Learn all about it here in this review.

Theme & Design

We’ve already seen Blueprint Gaming releasing a number of “The Goonies” themed slots, and they’ve always done pretty well. From the original The Goonies to later instalments like The Goonies Return and The Goonies Megaways, these games have always attracted casual players and fans of the movie, and it’s not hard to see why.

Visually, The Goonies: Quest for Treasure 2 looks like most previous instalments, although this time the reel set is slightly smaller, presumably due to the three “jackpot” mechanics above the reels” Trail Boost, Collect Expand, and Reel Attack. The reels are set deep inside a cave, and there are shimmering lanterns on the left- and right-hand sides of the reels; it looks good and fits in nicely with the series’ previous releases.

The Goonies Quest For Treasure 2 Gameplay & Bonus Features

The Goonies: Quest for Treasure 2 is played on a six-reel, four-row layout, and there are no paylines. Instead, the game uses a 4,096-ways-to-win mechanic. The RTP is slightly below average, coming in at 95%, and you can bet between €0.10 and €25 per spin.

Like most Goonies slots so far, Blueprint Gaming has included a “Hey You Guys” modifier in the base game. On any spin, there’s a chance that the Sloth can appear and award one random modifier. This can include randomly added cash prizes to the reels, an increased number of bonus scatter symbols to the reels for that spin, symbol upgrades, and cascading reels.

Then you have the Collect Feature. The COLLECT symbol is active on reels 1 and 6 only, and on any spin where a Cash Prize symbol lands on reels 1-6, if a COLLECT symbol also lands, then the collect feature is triggered. The COLLECT symbol will expand to cover the reel and collect all of the cash values shown on the Cash Prize symbols.

Now, each time you land a COLLECT symbol, it’s added to the progression trail. This allows you to unlock new features. Once a new feature is unlocked, it stays unlocked. The first unlockable is One Eyed Willy Treasure Chests, while subsequent tiers include Cascade Collect, Mystery Symbol, Boost Collect, and Treasure Wheel.

Landing 3 or more bonus symbols in view triggers the Treasure Spins or One Eyed Willy Spins, depending on which you’ve unlocked. Both features award 10 free games, and during the bonus, any unlocked features remain active. It’s basically all about landing COLLECT symbols during the free spins bonuses, as doing so increases a multiplier in the Treasure Spins or adds additional Cash Prize symbols in the One Eyed Willy Spins.

Power Play

If available via the operator, there’s also a Power Play option that becomes unlocked once you complete the progression trail. You then have the option to increase your base game stake by 5x, and then, only Cash Prize, COLLECT, and Bonus Scatter symbols can land.

Pros

  • Feels quite complex compared to previous The Goonies releases.
  • 4,096-ways-to-win mechanic.
  • Plenty of different bonuses and features.

Cons

  • Progression trails aren’t for everyone.
  • Power Play isn’t available until you’ve unlocked it.
  • Little to differentiate The Goonies: Quest for Treasure 2 from previous Goonies titles.

The Goonies Quest For Treasure 2 Slot Review Final Thoughts

While The Goonies: Quest for Treasure 2 definitely expands on Blueprint’s tried-and-tested “The Goonies”formula, it’s hard to escape the feeling that we’ve seen this all before. The modifiers, the cash collection mechanics, and even the way the game’s designed all feel kind of “recycled” from previous Goonies titles. Yes, the progression trail is good fun, but it also slows down the game’s speed - and acts as a total “no-no” for some players who hate progression-based slots.

Still, there’s still plenty of entertainment here for fans of the series. The mix of modifiers, bonus rounds, and collectible upgrades creates enough variety to keep things exciting. While the COLLECT mechanic is anything but new, it can help to produce some pretty healthy hits.

Still, the below-average RTP and the fact that the slot relies so heavily on unlockable progress makes it less appealing to casual players, we feel, and we can’t see it surpassing the popularity of previous Goonies titles.
