Game Overview
I’ve known a few people over the years who are bonkers about sushi – I’ve never really seen the appeal myself, but I’m not exactly known for being adventurous when it comes to food anyway. And hey, the sushi featured in Play’N’Go’s new Slashimi online slot looks so happy; it’s like it’s begging you to eat it! Who could say no? The game uses an unusual reel setup with three columns of five symbols each for a total of 125 payways by default, although this can increase to as many as 1,000 under certain conditions. The top jackpot is unfortunately capped at just 5,000x the total bet, and the RTP is also casino-selectable – be sure to check that your favourite online casino is running the game at the maximum 96% setting before beginning to play.
As I understand it, good sushi is all about the chef, and that certainly seems to be the case in Slashimi! Before every spin, the chef will select a random symbol that will automatically divide into two when it lands. Should enough of these split symbols land, it can increase the maximum number of payways from 125 up to 1,000. Three scatter symbols will award just four free spins, but the special wasabi symbol that is only present on the free spin reels will often top you up with a fair few additional spins. Also, the free spin mode allows you to override the chef and choose your own splitting symbol from the menu, which will surely put your sushi-making skills to the test!
So, are you ready to slice and dice some of that tasty raw fish? Of course, you are! So, go ahead and fire up our free demo slot of Slashimi, available to play below:
Slashimi Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As you are no doubt aware, there’s no shortage of fish-themed slots these days – I’m too scared even to make a joke about jumping out of the window if I have to review another Fishin’ Frenzy or Big Bass Bonanza game, as I know for sure that one is going to land in my inbox in the next week or two! There have been a few more interesting fishing-themed games though – 4 Fantastic Fish, for example – but Slashimi is a very different style of game, both technically and visually, and that’s more than welcome in my view. It’s a shame that the top win has been set so low, though – nobody would complain about winning 5,000x their bet, but it just doesn’t seem enough in an era where some games offer 10, 20, or even 50 times that amount!
Things get a little bit off when it comes to the paytable of Slashimi, but this is an inevitable consequence of a game with just three columns. The highest-paying sauce bottle wild symbol is only worth 1x the bet for a complete payway of three of a kind, after which there are just four high-paying sushi symbols. I’ll describe these by the colour of their backdrops, as I’m no expert on the specific names of different types of sushi! The green one will pay you 0.5x for a complete payway, whilst the purple has a return of 0.4x for all three symbols. The cyan sushi is worth 0.3x, with the brown coming in last at just 0.2x for a three of a kind combination. The low-paying symbols are also represented by cute circular sushi pieces, each with a royal letter inscribed on top. All five share identical returns of 0.1x the total bet for a full pay way of three-of-a-kind.
There’s usually no reason to complain about the betting selection setup of Play’N’Go’s online slots. The minimum/maximum wager limits have been set at €0.10, and €100.00 per spin, respectively, and the quick bet selection bar allows you to jump between similarly sized bets at will from one spin to the next should you wish. The gaps between bet amounts get a little bit large towards the upper end of the scale, but I don’t see too many players who will be troubled by this.
Base Game & Modifiers
In some ways, I guess you could consider Slashimi as a typical video slot turned on its side – there are still 15 symbol positions; it’s just that the playfield arrangement is 3×5 rather than the more standard 5×3. Only full payways of three symbols count for wins, as you might expect, but those wins are very small unless they include some of the chef’s special split symbols.
Two For One Modifier
At the start of every spin, the chef will choose a random symbol from the paytable to act as the split symbol for that game round. Every occurrence of this symbol that lands on the reels will divide into two when landing, potentially allowing you to win on up to 1,000 payways.
Slashimi Slot Bonus Features
The green Wasabi scatter symbol is used as the bonus trigger in Slashimi, and you’ll need all three of them to trigger four free spins. Let’s look below at how the bonus feature works and what you can expect from it.
Free Spins
Four free spins don’t sound like a lot, and indeed it isn’t, but you can at least win additional free spins whilst the feature is active – one extra spin for each wasabi symbol.
In this mode, you are given the opportunity to decide on your own splitting symbol rather than relying on the chef’s recommendation. This adds a slight tactical element to the bonus round – do you choose a lower-value symbol that is likely to land more often, or go for broke by picking the highest-paying symbol and hoping it rolls in to create the largest possible win?
During free spins, the selected splitting symbol also becomes sticky, so even if you do only end up with four free spins, they can still end up becoming extremely valuable!
Pros
- Attractive visual styling.
- Up to 1,000 payways in a three-reel game are practically unheard of!
- Sticky-splitting symbols during free spins can be very profitable.
Cons
- Casino-selectable RTP practically forces you to check that you are getting a fair game whenever you want to play Slashimi at a different online casino.
- Low maximum jackpot of just 5,000x the total bet.
- Only four free spins are awarded by default.
Final Thoughts
I may not be keen on eating sushi, but I don’t mind spinning Slashimi! It really is a shame about the 5,000x win cap, though – I can easily see players running into that during a lucky bonus round with the splitting/sticking symbols. The casino selectable RTP is also frustrating in what is otherwise an excellent online slot.
