Game Overview
Progress brings prosperity; Red Tiger informs us on the opening screen of their latest game; I don’t know about you, but the name “Shadow Society” makes me think more of the Illuminati and Black Rock than peace, progress and prosperity. Still, let’s keep an open mind – perhaps this is the good kind of shadow society… those do exist, right? The game uses nine pay lines as standard, but a grid expansion feature not only adds extra reels and rows but also increases the number of pay lines up to a maximum of 25. The RTP of 95.76% is just shy of the 96% average, whilst the top win from a billion-round simulation was 1957.7x. I’d guess this machine is a medium-volatility affair, considering these statistics.
The main special feature of the Shadow Society slot game is the expanding playfield, but Red Tiger has included a few other interesting twists to spice things up. A progress bar above the reel set awards extra winnings-boosting modifiers after every five completed steps. There’s also a free spin based bonus round with ascending multipliers up to a maximum of 15x; how valuable this feature is will strongly depend on the size of the playfield when the free spins are triggered, however – you can increase the size of the playfield during the free spins feature. Still, ideally, you will be hoping to trigger it when you already have the maximum 5×3 reel set in play.
It sounds like an interesting game, doesn’t it? I certainly thought so, but why not give our free demo slot of Shadow Society a blast here and decide for yourself?
Shadow Society Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
A shadow society – often referred to as a secret society – is a club or organisation that conceals their activities, events, inner functioning, and often even their membership. There have been many rumours throughout history concerning shadow societies – some of these are well-documented today, such as the Knights Templar, whilst others, such as the Illuminati, remain firmly in the realm of conspiracy theory. Most of the best-known shadow societies are thought to be involved in politics, college/university fraternities, and loose-knit groups of online activists, such as those who identify as anonymous. According to the most recent census taken in several western countries, there is also a growing number of people who claim to belong to the secret order of the Jedi. Sadly, I’m not allowed to talk about this any further.
Not to worry, though – I can tell you about the payouts in the Shadow Society online slot. I’m sure that will satisfy your interest in secretive societies no end! The only problem is that I have no idea how to describe the four picture symbols in this game! There is an old looking guy in a gold frame who is worth 30x your bet for each full pay line of five-of-a-kind, followed by a masked lady with a return of 15x for all five, then a guy in a green frame who reminds me of the green lantern with a return of 12x for a full pay line of his symbols. The last picture symbol has a purple frame, and she is worth 10x for a five-of-a-kind combination. There are five lower paying symbols with returns of between 3x and 7x for full pay lines. Keep in mind, however, that the default grid size of 3×3 prohibits you from hitting any of these wins – you’ll need to expand the grid to five reels before a five-of-a-kind is possible!
You can opt to bet anywhere between €0.10 and €40.00 per round in this game, which is quite a high maximum bet for Red Tiger, who usually opt for a lower figure. Note that the numbers shown on the paytable are based on the minimum bet, so you must multiply them by your current stake if you are playing at more than €0.10 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
Let’s talk about the base game then – the action begins on a 3×3 playfield with just nine paylines. You’ll need a full line of three matching symbols to win anything at this stage, so you’ll want to get the grid enlarged as quickly as possible. To do this, you’ll need to collect progress symbols which appear as large 1×2 special blocks.
Progress Bar
The progress bar is shown above the regular reel set and will fill by one point each time you land a progress symbol, as described above. There are 40 steps on the bar, with a new feature being unlocked after every five symbols you collect. These features are:
- 5/40 – Purple Character Symbol is Unlocked
- 10/40 – Reel Four is Unlocked
- 15/40 – Green Character Symbol is Unlocked
- 20/40 – Row Four is Unlocked
- 25/40 – Red Character Symbol is Unlocked
- 30/40 – Reel Five is Unlocked
- 35/40 – Golden Character Symbol is Unlocked
- 40/40 – Row Five is Unlocked
I couldn’t find any information about when these features are taken away – they didn’t disappear after I hit a free spins bonus round. Still, I can’t imagine they remain unlocked permanently. Then again, as the game doesn’t specify anything about this, perhaps they do. After all, the features in Microgaming’s slots remain unlocked permanently after you have played the game enough to earn all of them, so perhaps this machine works similarly.
Shadow Society Slot Free Spins Feature
There is just a single free spin-based bonus round outside of the base game and its many unlockable features. You’ll need to hit three scatters on reels one, three, and five to trigger this bonus round, which awards ten free spins.
The free spins feature will begin with the same grid size you had when it was triggered; however, progress symbols will continue to land during the feature, so you may be lucky enough to expand the grid in the middle of your bonus round on occasion.
During the free spins feature, a multiplier is applied to all wins, which increases by 1x after each free spin. If you manage to retrigger the feature, the multiplier can reach a maximum of 15x, after which any further retriggers will still add more free spins to the remaining counter, but the multiplier will remain capped at 15x.
Shadow Society Slot Review Final Thoughts
If you like a good conspiracy theory, then I’m sure the imagery in Shadow Society will appeal to you very much! I enjoyed testing the game, but I don’t think I would spend too much time playing it in real money mode. Still, the expanding grid makes for an interesting game that will probably tempt many players to keep playing until they have unlocked everything and seen all the game has to offer.
