Game Overview

Octoplay’s Serpent Gold: Hold and Win takes you into the heart of the rainforest and puts you up against a vicious serpent that surely has a venomous bite! Take him on, and you could win up to 6,001x your stake in this creative-looking release.

Theme & Design

Serpent Gold: Hold and Win is designed around a cool 3D rainforest theme, and you’ll notice that the reels are set on top of dense vegetation, with a crazy-looking serpent slithering at the top of the screen. The reels look to be set in an ancient structure, and the symbols featured in the game are low-value playing card values, including 10, jack, queen, king, and ace, and high variance theme-specific symbols, including a treasure map, a chest, and a compass.

Octoplay and its partner studios are notorious for creating games in the Hold & Win genre, so if you enjoy today’s release and want to try out some other games from the studio, I’d recommend The Grand Rooster and Coin Bang Bang to start you off.

Serpent Gold Hold & Win Gameplay & Features

Serpent Gold: Hold and Win is designed around a five-reel, four-row layout, and unusually for a game of this layout, there are just 20 fixed paylines, not many considering the slot could accommodate up to a 1024-ways-to-win mechanic. You can spin the reels between €0.10 and €150 per play, whilst the default RTP is 95.78%, slightly below the current industry average.

During the base game, up to eight Golden Coin symbols can land on the reels. These coins contain cash values of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, or 10x. When two or more land next to, or above, each other, they form a cluster. Each Golden Coin cluster then locks in place for three spins, and if any new ones land in place and join the cluster, the spin counter resets to three, and this process continues until you fail to land any new coins.

Now, each time you land a Golden Coin in the base game, it has a chance of “throwing itself” towards the Snake. This can randomly trigger the Hold and Win bonus. This is your classic three re-spin bonuses, and during the feature, the only symbols present on the reels are Golden Coins, Snakes, and Empty spaces. The reel grid expands to a 6×6 board. In addition to landing Golden Coins during the bonus round, you can also land Snakes.

The Snakes are your special modifiers. The Collect Snake, for example, collects all Cash Prizes currently in view, while the Clone Snake clones between one and all Golden Coins on the screen. There’s also a Double Snake symbol, which, when it lands, doubles the value of all adjacent Golden Coins.

The game also offers five localised jackpots: Mini, Minor, Major, Grand, and Ultimate, the latter of which is worth 5,000x! These jackpots are won by landing a certain number of locked symbols: the Ultimate Jackpot is won by filling 36 reel positions!

Double Chance

Serpent Gold: Hold and Win also contains a Double Chance mechanic. This increases your total base game stake, but in return, your chances of triggering the Hold and Win feature are doubled.

Pros

  • Win up to 6,001x the bet.
  • The double chance increases your chances of hitting the feature.
  • There are five localised jackpots to win.

Cons

  • The return to player percentage is below the average.
  • The jackpots are not progressive.
  • No bonus buy option,

Serpent Gold Hold & Win Slot Review Final Thoughts

Octoplay almost always does a great job of either creating or improving mechanics, and Serpent Gold: Hold and Win shows that the game developer can take existing mechanics and add their own spin on things.

Sure, at its core it’s another Hold and Win slot, but we love the addition of the base game features, as their inclusion allows you a shot at winning coin prizes and jackpots without needing to trigger the main feature. It goes without saying that it’s not going to win any industry awards for originality, but it’s an okay game, and with a maximum win of 6,001x, there’s some potential, too!
