Slot Overview
Sand and Ashes is Hacksaw Gaming’s latest venture into Ancient Egypt (finally, an Egyptian-themed slot; haven’t seen that before!), and the game’s played on a 5×5 grid with Sticky Wild Respins, Storm Modifiers, Wild Multipliers worth up to 999x, and a maximum win potential of 10,000x. On the surface, it looks very Hacksaw, but is it any good? Let’s find out.
Gameplay & Bonus Features
Sand and Ashes is played on a 5×5 grid, and there are 19 fixed paylines in play at all times. The game boasts a dead-on-average RTP of 97%, and you can bet between €0.10 and €100 per spin.
The game’s central symbol is the Wild Scarab Multiplier, which substitutes for all paying symbols and carries a built-in multiplier value. If the Wild helps to form part of a win, it is then applied against that win, and Multipliers can land as 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, or 200x. Plus, if more than one Wild Scarab Multiplier appears on the same winning payline, those values are added together before being applied to the win, too.
Now, whenever a Wild Scarab Multiplier lands, it triggers a Respin, too. On the Respin, the Wild remains locked in its original position while new symbols spin in around it. Any additional Wild Scarab Multiplier that lands during a respin resets the counter and triggers another, so this is basically a respin-until-no-more-wilds-land feature.
During any respin, one of two storm events can randomly trigger, too. Firestorm adds a random multiplier value of up to 100x to all Wild Scarab Multipliers on the screen, while Sandstorm nudges all Wild Scarab Multipliers one reel to the left.
Landing 3 of the FS symbols triggers the Desert Fury bonus, awarding you with 8 free games and an increased chance of Wild Scarab Multipliers landing. Landing 4 FS symbols triggers the Storming Sphinx bonus, and this awards you 10 free games.
During the Storming Sphinx Bonus, Wild Scarab Multipliers no longer trigger respins when they land. Instead, Firestorms and Sandstorms can activate on every free spin, and all Wilds that land lock in place and stay locked for the duration of the feature.
FeatureSpins / Bonus Buy
Like all Hacksaw Gaming slots today, Sand and Ashes contains a few bonus buy/feature spins options:
- BonusHunt FeatureSpins: Costs 3x and makes each spin 5x more likely to trigger a bonus.
- Pharaoh Phrenzy FeatureSpins: Costs 50x and each spin guarantees at least 2 wild scarab multipliers land.
- Desert Fury: Costs 100x to buy 8 free spins.
- Storming Sphinx: Costs 200x to buy 10 free spins.

Theme & Design
Sand and Ashes takes a pretty notable detour from what Hacksaw Gaming usually produces, and for us, here at Demoslot, that’s a definite good thing. Finally, the studio has produced something that doesn’t, at least, look like another re-skin of games we’ve seen tens of times before, and the game has some decent design work, all themed around Egyptian archaeological mystery.
That said, like we said earlier, Egypt is one of the most thoroughly overdone slot themes in the history of the universe, and while it looks good, Sand and Ashes probably doesn’t do quite enough to really separate itself from the likes of Hand of Anubis or Book of Dead.
Pros
- Win up to 10,000x
- Two base game features keep gameplay fairly exciting
- Slightly more affordable Bonus Buy options than Hacksaw normally offers
Cons
- A very, very over-done theme
- Only 19 fixed paylines
- FeatureSpins/Bonus Buy options unavailable in some regions
Final Thoughts
Sand and Ashes is an interesting release for Hacksaw Gaming, and while, on one hand, they’re clearly trying to step into something a bit new, they haven’t quite, in our opinion, managed to shift the “Hacksaw” feel yet.
Yes, we like the way the sticky wild re-spin mechanic works, and the two storm modifiers in the base game do ensure that, unlike a lot of their titles, non-bonus spins aren't completely dead. However, aside from that, it just feels very... Hacksaw Gaming-like... and sure, for some players, that won't be a problem. For us though? We're getting a bit tired of seeing the developer rely on mundane and overdone mechanics.
Add to that the fact that they've chosen the single most overdone theme in the history of slot machines, and you have to wonder what's really going on inside Hacksaw’s development studios!
It's definitely not the worst game we've reviewed, but whether it becomes a lasting entry in Haxel's portfolio will depend on how players react when it is officially released. For us, it's not a game we'll be playing, although we understand there will be many players who feel differently.

In my opinion, Sand & Ashes from Hacksaw Gaming actually has an interesting concept in terms of theme and visuals. The ancient Egyptian feel and animated effects feel typical of Hacksaw, which is known for its strong and cinematic slot designs. However, when it comes to gameplay, I think the game feels too heavy on volatility and lacks the sense of progression felt in the base game. Many spins feel empty without any meaningful connection, so playing sessions often feel like just waiting for a feature to arrive.
