It wouldn’t be a Nolimit City slot if it didn’t hit hard, but the original San Quentin slot hit so hard that it practically set a new standard for high-volatility slots, leaving players with adrenaline pumping as if they had just sprinted past the prison guards. The 150,000x maximum was massive, and the bonus buys were even crazier than the slot’s characters – Loco Luis, Heinrich 3rd, Biker Bill, Crazy Joe, and Beefy Dick. The volatility was and remains through the roof to this day. That groundbreaking title was released back in 2021, and it’s been a long time coming, but NoLimit City has finally launched a sequel. We’re heading back to one of America’s most notorious jails, where we’re sure to take a pounding (in one way or another), especially since the numbers look even bigger and scarier this time around. San Quentin 2: Death Row is a 6-reel slot with 1,024 ways to win, a 96.13% RTP, and a jaw-dropping 200,000x the stake maximum win.
That maximum win of 200,000x the stake can occur in one of three ways. You can hit it naturally during the Green Mile Free Spins bonus by landing 5 Jumping Wilds on the same spin, by gambling the Jumping Wilds you won when triggering the bonus, or by spending 2,500x the stake to buy the bonus game and hoping to land – or gamble for – more Jumping Wilds. I’ll explain all of this in more detail later in the review. As for what else you can expect, the sequel brings back fan-favorite features like xWays, Razor Splits, Enhancer Cells, and Split Wilds, offering more of the high-octane action that made the original slot so thrilling.
San Quentin is a prison for the toughest of the tough, and the same thing can be said about this slot. The free-to-play San Quentin 2: Death Row slot demo is below – so give it a try to see what you think.

Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
It says a lot when I – and probably many of you who have played Nolimit City’s slots – would call a game themed around one of the world’s most infamous prisons, featuring murderers, serial killers, and the worst of the worst, actually pretty tame for this developer. It’s hard to disagree, especially when you consider Nolimit’s other releases, like Karen Maneater, centred on a cannibalistic woman, and Mental, set in a mental asylum where patients are systematically tortured. And those are just two examples.
I could spend hours talking about the controversial themes of Nolimit City slots of the past, but this review is going to be long enough as it is, so let’s move onto the paytable of San Quentin 2: Death Row. The main cast returns for this sequel, and once again, they represent the slot’s high-value symbols. Beefy Dick has a 2x return for a 5-symbol combination, Loco Luis rewards up to 1.8x, Heinrich 3rd delivers a top payout of 1.6x, Biker Bill is worth up to 1.4x, and Crazy Joe returns a maximum of 1.2x. The low pays come from the Bar of Soap, Comb, Dice, Gloves, and Toilet Roll, with those returning up to 1x, 0.8x, 0.6x, 0.4x, and 0.2x, respectively. Spinning the reels of San Quentin 2 doesn’t have to cost much, with a minimum stake of €0.20 per spin supported. NLC slots do attract high rollers, though, and they can place spin bets of up to €100.00 per spin should they choose to.
Base Game & Modifiers
The first significant change from the original slot is an increased reel matrix. We now have 6 reels in a 4-4-4-4-4 configuration that deliver a base of 1,024 ways to win (they can increase due to Enhancer Reels, Razor Splits xWay symbols, etc) and volatility that can only be described as savage. Winning combinations form when three or more matching symbols appear on successive reels, starting from the leftmost reel and moving right.
Enhancer Cells & Wild Splits
There are two locked rows, one above the reels and the other below. These contain a locked Enhancer Cell each for every reel. When one or two bonus symbols land on a reel, they transform into wild symbols and unlock the extra positions at either end of the reel, with both revealing one of the following:
- High Paying Symbols: One of the Beefy Dick, Loco Luis, Heinrich 3rd, Biker Bill, and Crazy Joe high-paying character symbols.
- Wild Symbols: These substitute for all regular symbols when winning combinations are possible.
- Razor Split Symbols: These split all symbols on the reels into two instances of the same symbol. They’re split twice if Razor Split symbols appear in both Enhancer Cells. If a scatter symbol is on the reel, it transforms into a wild, which then splits all symbols on its row.
- xWay Symbols: When these land, they split two symbols directly above or below them (depending on which Enhancer Reel they land) and transform them and themselves into the same symbol type. If an xWay appears on both Enhancers, they split all symbols on the reel and convert them into wild symbols.
Split Wilds can also appear on the reels as a result of a base game spin, and when they do, they split all symbols on their reel.
Nolimit Boosters
You can choose to spin for 2x or 45x the current stake to have spins that guarantee 1 or 2 scatter symbols, respectively.
San Quentin 2 Slot Bonus Features
The main bonus game on San Quentin 2 is a free spins bonus that triggers when three or more scatter symbols land anywhere in view on a base game spin.
Jumping Wilds Maximum Win Gamble
Recently, Nolimit City has used different methods to goad players into gambling for their slot’s maximum wins. On San Quentin 2: Death Row, this is via gambling the Jumping WIlds received when triggering the Green Mile Free Spins Bonus Game.
On top of your 8 free spins, you receive 1, 2, or 3 Jumping Wilds for the bonus game, depending on if you landed 3, 4, or 5 triggering scatter symbols, respectively. Players can collect what they won, watch their free spins play out, or gamble for more Jumping Wilds and potentially the 200,000x the stake maximum win.
If gamble attempt rewards an additional Jumping Wild if successful, and forfeits 5 free spins if not. Any player that manages to win 5 Jumping Wilds is then given the option of collecting their free spins with 5 Jumping Wilds or the Max Win – a tough choice that one (not!)
Green Mile Free Spins
Assuming you’ve collected the free spins bonus, your spins play out with a number of active enhancer cells depending on how many Jumping Wilds you received:
- 1 Jumping Wild: 3 reels have unlocked enhancer cells.
- 2 Jumping Wilds: 4 reels have unlocked enhancer cells.
- 3 or More Jumping Wilds: 5 reels have unlocked enhancer cells.
If you have 4 or 5 Jumping Wilds, these start with a 2x win multiplier that applies to payouts they help create.
At the beginning of the bonus, the unlocked enhancer reels spin, and whichever symbols are revealed will lock in place for the remainder of the bonus. The Jumping Wilds jump to a random new position on every spin. If they appear on the same reel as a Razor Split, their win multiplier is doubled, and their values remain persistent until the end of the bonus.
Now, when scatter symbols land on the reels with locked enhancer cells, they transform into Jumping Wilds, meaning it is possible to trigger up to 5 Jumping Wilds simultaneously, which rewards the 200,000x maximum win on this slot. Finally, when 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols appear on a spin, you receive an additional 3, 4, 5, or 6 free spins, respectively.
Bonus Buy
Now for the craziest bonus buys you’ll ever see (or until NoLimit City outdoes themselves again):
- Green Mile Free Spins with a Single Jumping Wild costs 100x the stake.
- Green Mile Free Spins with 2 Jumping Wilds costs 500x the stake.
- Green mile Free Spins with 3 Jumping Wilds costs a bank account-shattering 2,500x the stake.
- A Lucky Draw with a 40%/40%/20% chance of triggering the respective options above costs 580x the stake.
Pros
- Massive 200,000x maximum win potential
- Packed with Nolimit City's signature features like xWays and Razor Splits
Cons
- Extremely high volatility can lead to brutal sessions
- Bonus buys are expensive and not for the faint of heart
San Quentin 2 Slot Review Final Thoughts
San Quentin 2: Death Row is every bit the brutal, high-octane sequel you'd expect from Nolimit City. If the original volatility of San Quentin scared you more than the thought of spending a night at San Quentin, then the sequel will have you comparing it to a six-month stretch with its cast as your cellmates. With a jaw-dropping 200,000x the stake maximum win and the return of features like Jumping Wilds, xWays, and Razor Splits, the slot is not here to play nice - it’s here to dominate. Then again, isn't that what we love about NLC slots?
