Game Overview
Do not adjust your television set: this machine’s black and white colouring is a feature, not a bug! Nolimit City’s latest mature-themed online slot is titled Rock Bottom, a mostly black-and-white online slot with just the occasional dash of heavily undersaturated colour. The dark colour scheme is matched with an equally bleak-looking cityscape backdrop, and the resulting game has an almost menacing feel that perfectly exemplifies its title’s meaning. The game uses 576 payways, has a 96.04% RTP, and, if you are looking for the light in this veritable sea of darkness, the 19,690x maximum win should be enough to brighten up your day!
Rock Bottom is almost simple by Nolimit City standards; this developer usually crams as many features into their games as they possibly can, but it seems as if they have chilled out a bit this time around! The dividing xSplit symbols make an appearance once more, along with two free spin modes named “Headshrinker” and “Insanity”, but the feature set feels restrained compared to previous games released by Nolimit City. A bonus bet option is available, along with three different bonus buy facilities.
I’m a massive fan of the mature themes that this provider focuses on with their online slots. So let’s see what they have in store for us this time around. Try our free demo slot of Rock Bottom below and see what you make of it.
Rock Bottom Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Hitting “rock bottom” is an expression that is typically used to describe somebody that has been having a terrible time of things lately. The person may be suffering from an addiction of some kind, frequently alcohol abuse, and it is often said that these people will need to hit “rock bottom” before they will re-assess their situation and make a choice to stop and turn things around. That sure is a dark basis for an online slot, and it’s probably a good thing that the game leaves it up to you to decide on the story behind each of the five characters featured on the paytable. I remember thinking that the tale of Jack the Ripper was particularly dark when Spring Heeled Jack was released recently, but, in truth, only Nolimit City’s own games, such as the almighty Serial, come anywhere close to the mature vibe given off by Rock Bottom.
Let’s hope that the paytable isn’t anywhere close to rock bottom then, shall we?! Our highest-paying symbol is a clown-like character who I am certain was definitely not inspired by The Joker, and he will pay you 7.5x your stake for every completed payway of five-of-a-kind. Next, a female character rocking a 1980s-style hairdo will pay you 5x your bet for all five of her symbols, and she is followed by a guy sporting shades and a cowboy-like hat at 3.75x for a completed pay way. The remaining two high-paying symbols feature a Freddy Mercury lookalike and a punk rocker, with payouts of 3x and 2.5x your bet, respectively, when featuring in five-of-a-kind combinations.
The betting range starts at €0.20 per spin and maxes out at €100.00, which should be a wide enough range to suit those with a small bankroll and those who want to partake in a bit of high rolling.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Rock Bottom utilises a slightly unusual playfield with three rows on the first and last reels, along with four rows on reels two, three, and four. This creates a total of 576 possible payways, with winnings awarded for any set of three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left.
Xsplit Symbol
The xSplit symbol only appears on reels two, three, and four in the base game. It will split itself down the middle each time it lands, along with any character symbols that happen to show on the same row in adjacent positions.
It will also divide into two wild symbols, and multiple xSplit symbols can affect the same character symbol multiple times, potentially splitting one symbol into two, four, or eight new symbols. It will not affect scatter or low-paying symbols.
Xbet Flush ( Bonus Bet )
Many games offer a bonus bet facility, but it is not always clear whether utilising such an option will positively affect your return percentage.
Activating the xBet bonus bet in Rock Bottom will guarantee that a scatter symbol will always appear on the second reel. This comes at the cost of 50% on top of the normal price of each spin, and the paytable states that enabling the feature will lower the game’s RTP ever-so-slightly from 96.04% to 96%.
My analysis is that enabling the xBet will increase the frequency you will hit the bonus round, but it does so at a minimal cost in terms of your RTP.
Rock Bottom Slot Bonus Features
The scatter symbol in Rock Bottom is represented by an alcohol bottle – how appropriate, Nolimit City! Hitting three or four of these symbols will activate five “headshrinker” free spins, whilst hitting all five will instead award you the enhanced “insanity” free spins mode.
As a finishing touch, any scatter symbols that land above the bottom row will nudge before the bonus round begins, with one extra free spin being awarded for each nudge. Yes, even the scatters have to hit rock bottom before they work out what they are supposed to do with themselves!
Headshrinker Free Spins
There are five stages of shrinker spins, one for each of the five characters featured on the paytable. You start at stage one, increasing to the next stage every time you collect five scatter symbols. Each time you move up a stage, the game will add two additional spins to your remaining counter.
On stage one, the lowest-paying character symbol is expanded into a four-high stack. When moving up to stage two, the next highest-paying character symbol will also become a stacked symbol, with the highest-paying character finally becoming a stacked symbol if you manage to reach stage five.
Any character symbols which land before you reach their stage will build up a multiplier that will come into force after you reach the corresponding stage. This makes the feature a balancing act, as the longer it takes to reach the later stages, the more your potential winnings could be, but you will have fewer spins left to try and hit them!
Insanity Free Spins
The Insanity free spins work almost identically to the headshrinker free spins described above; however, each time a character symbol becomes an expanded symbol in this mode, the character will become wild instead of just a regular four-high symbol.
The name of this feature seems appropriate as it can undoubtedly be insanely profitable, however, hitting the five scatters required to trigger it without using the bonus buy facility is likely to be extremely challenging.
Bonus Buy
You can purchase the headshrinker free spins for a fair price of 75x the regular price per spin via the bonus buy menu if available in your country. If you wish to take a chance on the insanity free spins, you will have to risk big money – 500x the normal cost of a spin.
The price of the latter mode is quite prohibitive in my mind, as 500x is just way too much to risk unless it’s just a very occasional flutter at the end of a high-winning session.
There is an option to go for a lucky draw at the cost of 183x your bet – this seems like a good idea to me, as even if you lose the draw, you still get yourself the headshrinker spins which I would have been happy to pay a little more than 75x for anyway.
Rock Bottom Slot Review Final Thoughts
I usually enjoy playing Nolimit City’s games, but I sometimes feel they can be a little over-complicated. Rock Bottom seems like a decent compromise to me, as it features several of the best aspects of the provider’s games without things getting too over-the-top and confusing. With a huge maximum jackpot available of almost 20,000x your bet, this is a game to look out for between now and Christmas.
