Game Overview

Online slot developers seem to have a few go-to niches of games when they’re looking for inspiration, and Safari or Animals is one such genre of slot game that gets used a hell of a lot. The latest provider to fall back on this reliable theme is iSoftbet with their Roar of the Bear Megaways slot, a 6-reel game with up to 200,704 paylines, an RTP of 96%, and a maximum win of 10,000x bet.

If feature-rich slot games are your thing, you’ll enjoy exploring what Roar of the Bear Megaways has to offer. Cascading reels are present throughout, and we also have the presence of mystery symbols and two base game modifiers, which can transform low and high paying symbols into wilds. The headline feature of the slot is the free spins bonus, triggered when four or more scatters appear in view. Before the bonus begins, you’ll be awarded a random amount of spins and Golden Claws. The claws are important as the more you are awarded and collect throughout the bonus, the bigger your roaming wild will become.

Even the thought of a bear attack is enough to send a shiver down my spine and remind me of that scene from The Revenant, urgh. Rather than risking your life out in the wild, why not play it safe and fire up our Roar of the Bear Megaways slot demo? It’s a lot safer and potentially more fun.

Roar Of The Bear Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Almost every online slot developer has at least a handful of animal-themed games in their collection. This has led to some iconic releases over the years, with SG Gaming’s Raging Rhino slot being a roaring success and iSoftbet also having its fair share of popular games in this niche, with the likes of Majestic Megaways putting the provider on the map where Megaways were at the peak of their powers. It’s fair to say the draw of Megaways has weaned off somewhat, but iSoftbet continues to pump the games out, so let’s see what they’ve got lined up for us in their Roar of the Bear Megaways slot.

We’ll kick things off at the paytable, where we have some pretty impressive values on show. At the top of the table and the highest paying symbol, we have the Wolf, worth 1,000x for a winning combination of six. The Lioness follows at 500x, with the Reindeer next at 200x, an Owl paying 150x, and the remaining premium symbol is the Racoon, awarding 100x bet for a completed line of six. Unsurprisingly, we’ve got the industry standard royals as the low pays, with an Ace paying 80x for a full line, the King worth 50x, a Queen valued at 40x, and finally, the Jack and Ten sharing payouts of 20x bet for a six of a kind win. The Bear acts as the Wild in the game and will substitute for all other regular symbols.

iSoftbet sticks to their tried and tested method regarding the bet selection on the game, with the minimum price to play starting at €0.20 a spin and the maximum bet reaching €20. Players can choose to activate the Wild Bet at an extra cost of 50% on top of their normal stake, which will increase the chances of triggering the modifiers and bonus round.

Roar Of The Bear Megaways Slot Base Game

Roar Of The Bear Megaways Base Game
Roar of the Bear Megaways base game

Roar of the Bear Megaways is played on a slightly different playfield than what you’d expect from a Megaways slot. There are 6 reels in total, but also an upper and lower tracker in play, meaning the game can potentially roll in a 7x8x8x8x8x7 formation, providing 200,704 ways to win. Players will record a winning combo when at least three symbols (two for the wolf) match on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel first. All wins initiate the cascading reels feature, whereby symbols in the win explode and are removed from the reels before new symbols fill the spaces left behind, providing additional chances to win.

Mystery Symbol

Mystery symbols can appear on any spin, and when the reels come to a halt, all instances will change into a random symbol from the paytable, except the Wild or Scatter.

Max Megaways

During any spin, the Max Megaways modifier can trigger. This will cause the game to roll in the maximum of 200,704 ways to win on that spin.

Wild Eagle & Wild Salmon Modifiers

Landing an eagle symbol on the top tracker will transform all high value symbols into wilds, whereas landing a salmon symbol on the lower tracker will transform all low-value symbols into wilds. These symbols cannot both land on the same spin and are not active in the free spins bonus.

Roar Of The Bear Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Roar Of The Bear Free Spins Feature
Roar of the Bear free spins feature

We’ve got one main bonus round in Roar of the Bear Megaways, triggered by 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols landing in view, which will award 1, 2, or 3 bonus spins, respectively. The bonus spin(s) take place first and will award a starting number of free spins and Golden Claw symbols, determining the size of your roaming wild.

Free Spins Feature

Whilst the free spins are active, the main reels 2 – 5 are fixed and will always land 5 symbols in the marked section. In the same section, a Roaming wild will appear on random positions when the reels are spinning. Every 3x Golden Claw symbols collected will boost the Roaming Wild one size higher and award 2 extra spins. The wild can reach 1×2, 2×2, 2×3, and 3×3 in size.

Bonus Buy

A bonus buy button is active for players who wish to gain instant access to the free spins, costing 100x bet to activate.

Pros

  • There are many in-game features and modifiers to trigger.
  • High standard of graphics and design.

Cons

  • The free spins feature can feel very scripted once you get the roaming wild to a decent size.

Roar Of The Bear Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

I initially thought Roar of the Bear Megaways would be a slot I would enjoy. For a start, the values on the paytable are incredibly high, and there are heaps of bonuses and modifiers to trigger. This was short-lived though, once I had played a few bonus rounds. The wins are so high because there are no multipliers in the feature, and as soon as the roaming wild gets to a size that makes things interesting, it hugs the right side of that middle section or somehow manages to find a way not to hit a winning combo.Obviously, not every feature can pay you a big return, but I actually hit two zero-paying bonuses during the review and on one of the bonuses, the roaming wild was at a 2x3 size. Yes, it's a great-looking slot game, but not one I'll be revisiting in a hurry.
