Slot Overview

Retro Verse is a mega-sized grid slot from developer Push Gaming, themed around their cluster link mechanic, where cascading reels, multipliers, collectors, and free spins can produce wins up to a maximum of 10,000x the bet.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Push Gaming’s Retro Verse slot is played over a 6×9 reel layout, with wins awarded when clusters of 5 or more matching symbols connect adjacently anywhere within the grid, also triggering the cascading reels engine when they do. Players can place bets from a minimum of €0.10 to a maximum of €100, whilst variable RTP models can be used by operators ranging from a high of 96.24% to a low of 85.32%.

The base game mixes cluster pays with a few key modifiers that can entirely change how a spin plays out. Wilds come with built-in multipliers, for example, ranging from x1 up to x10, and these are applied whenever they’re part of a cluster. If multiple wilds are involved in the same win, each multiplier is applied one after the other, so values can stack up pretty quickly.

Alongside this, you’ve got the wild mystery symbol, which works as a standard substitute but also progresses over time. In the base game, it levels up depending on how many winning clusters it’s involved in, gradually building towards something more valuable.

Instant prize symbols are also in play here. These carry fixed multiplier values and only pay when you land a cluster of at least 5, making them more about setup than constant hits.

Then you’ve got the two more active modifiers. The magnet pulls matching symbols from across the grid into one spot to force a cluster, and it can even grab Wilds or instant prize symbols if enough are on screen. The light gun does the opposite, clearing out two regular symbol types entirely to open up space for better connections.

Free spins

Free Spins are triggered by landing 3 or more scatter symbols within the playfield. Once activated, the game shifts away from the base setup. Instead of standard symbol drops, each empty position cycles through a set of special symbols, including wilds, wild mystery symbols, instant prize values, magnets, extra spins or blanks.

Instant Prize symbols become much more important here, as they stay locked in place for the entire feature and are only evaluated at the end. You’re essentially building the grid over time rather than collecting wins spin by spin. Extra Spin symbols can extend the feature by 1 or 2 spins, and once used, they convert into instant prize symbols, adding even more value to the board.

Wild Mystery, Collectors & multipliers

The Wild Mystery symbol becomes more involved during free spins. Instead of just progressing, it can now reveal additional symbols, including collectors and multipliers, depending on what’s happening in the cluster.

Collectors are key to actually turning the setup into a payout. When one lands as part of a cluster, it gathers all instant prize values in that group and removes them from the grid, storing the total.

Multiplicator symbols can also appear, either through the wild mystery or after a collector triggers. These apply a multiplier to all adjacent instant prize and collector values, boosting everything around them before eventually converting into another instant prize symbol.

By the end of the feature, all remaining instant prize values and collected totals are combined and paid out, making it more about building the right setup across the spins rather than hitting constant wins.

Bonus Buy

Where active, players can choose from the following enhanced betting options:

  • Bet Boost: 2.5 times the chance of triggering the free spins – Costs 1.5x the bet.
  • Mega Bet Boost: 9.5 times the chance of triggering the free spins – Costs 2.5x the bet.
  • Standard Free Spins – Costs 120x the base bet.
  • Super Free Spins – Costs 280x the base bet.

Theme & Design

Many game providers have tried their hand at retro-themed slots, but Push Gaming has made a series of them with Retro Sweets and Retro Tapes preceding the release of Retro Verse. As for the design and overall feel of the game, it’s very much the same as the titles that have come before it, so we’re talking high-quality graphics and visuals and incredibly smooth gameplay.

Pros

  • Packed with features, bonuses and modifiers
  • Two ante bet and bonus buy option
  • The third game featuring the cluster link mechanic

Cons

  • The base game can deliver alot of dead spins
  • RTP models can drop as low as 85.32%
  • Bonus buy not available in all regions

Final Thoughts

Push Gaming are rolling back the years again in Retro Verse, so those of you who have enjoyed this game franchise so far will be happy to see more coin collectors, multipliers, cascading reels and mega-sized playfields.

However, whilst the production of the game is undoubtedly good and the slot does include bagfuls of features, the base game feels quite harsh at times, and as we know from the previous releases, the bonus rounds can be brutal, which carries across into Retro Verse, too.

So, will this game be your favourite title in the franchise so far? Or are you going to be sticking with tapes and sweets instead? Give our free demo a try and see what you make of it.
