Game Overview

It’s a standard business practice to trademark specific terms – take “hold and win”, for example – at least three different studios all producing games with a “hold and win” suffix at the moment! For clarity, this classy looking addition to the hold and win library titled Reel Crown is from iSoftBet. The game boasts attractive graphics, a reasonably pleasant soundtrack, 25 fixed pay lines, and a 95.50% RTP. I didn’t spot any mention of a maximum win inside the game, but a quick trip to iSoftBet’s website revealed a top jackpot prize of 5,000x the player’s stake.

The headline feature is, of course, the hold and win bonus round, but the variant offered here is slightly different from the ones I have seen in the past. The bonus starts with the regular 5×3 playfield used in the base game, but several different coloured gems can be collected to add additional rows, multiply the value of your prizes, or boost your remaining spin counter. Three modifiers are included to spice up the base game, potentially adding extra bonus symbols, stacked wild reels, or simply guaranteeing a win.

All those features combined with excellent presentation and bags of potential for big wins all up to a great, fun new slot. Try it out for yourself with our free demo slot of Reel Crown (Hold & Win), available to play below:

Reel Crown Slot Paytable
Reel Crown slot paytable

I doubt this is what iSoftBet intended when they created Reel Crown, but for some reason, the game makes me feel quite nostalgic for the seaside arcades I visited when I was younger. I guess it might be the sound effects which do it – you don’t hear coins falling from slots when visiting land-based casinos nowadays, but you certainly do hear that sound in the arcades! If you’ve already played your fair share of Bar-X Megaways and Luck of the Irish Big Bonus and are still hungry for more arcade-style action, this game might just put a smile on your face.

At the top of the paytable, we have the all-important wild symbol with a return of 20x your bet for every complete pay line of five of a kind. The highest-paying symbol in that category is the lucky seven, which has a payout of 16x for all five symbols, followed by the bell with a return of 12x your bet. All of these symbols have an old-school fruit machine style look to them, which is probably another contributing factor to the arcade nostalgia I felt whilst playing it! The classic slice of watermelon will pay you 8x your bet for a complete pay line, followed by the grapes at 6x. Four more fruits make up the lower end of the table, starting with the plum and orange, which will pay you 4x your bet for five-of-a-kind. Finally, the lemon and cherries have the lowest payout at 2x the current stake for all five.

Choosing your bet in this game is achieved by selecting a coin size, just like most other iSoftBet machines. This setup creates a minimum/maximum bet of €0.25 and €25.00, respectively, a reasonable range, but it’s a shame that there aren’t more intermediate bets available between the two extremes.

Base Game & Modifiers

Reel Crown Slot Base Game
Reel Crown slot base game

The base game of Reel Crown (Hold & Win) utilises a traditional five reel, three-row playfield with 25 fixed paylines. This suits the game perfectly, as I doubt that the classic fruit machine vibe would work as well with the enlarged playfields we see in so many other modern slots. Wins are also awarded in the traditional way, meaning that you will need to hit at least three matching symbols on a payline starting from the left.

Any time a base game modifier is triggered, the game will ask you to pick from three reels to determine which modifier you will receive. The options include:

Win Spin Modifier

iSoftBet has done its best to maintain suspense for as long as possible with its Win Spin modifier. This is done by adding a stack of mystery symbols to the reels to conceal your win before randomly transforming them into one chosen symbol from the paytable.

Bonus Add Modifier

This modifier adds lots of extra bonus trigger symbols to the reels, but unfortunately, there is no guarantee that these will end up awarding you the bonus. During my testing of the game, I found that the average number of additional bonus symbols added was around 20. The bonus triggered roughly 2/3 of the time I activated this modifier.

Wild Reels Modifier

This was my favourite of the three modifiers because it was the most consistent in awarding me winnings during my testing! The game will add between two and five full-height wild stacks to the reels, and whilst this doesn’t technically guarantee a win, I never had a dead spin after triggering this modifier while writing my review. Hitting all five stacked wilds will award you 500x the total bet.

Reel Crown Slot Bonus Features

The hold and win feature begins as a fairly typical three-spin bonus round, but things can change quickly in this game thanks to the multi-coloured enhancement gems, which can appear whilst the feature is in play. You’ll need to hit at least five scatter symbols anywhere on the screen to activate the bonus, but these do appear in stacks which makes it much easier to hit five than in other games with regular single scatter symbols.

Hold & Win Feature

Your bonus round begins with all the triggering scatter symbols becoming locked in place, and these will remain sticky for the duration of the feature. You initially have three spins or lives, but you can boost this total by collecting gems during play.

Like other three-spin features, you need to hit at least one symbol on each re-spin to re-fill your lives back up to the starting three. If you go three spins in a row without landing a new symbol, the feature will complete.

The main aim of the feature is to fill all reel positions with bonus symbols. The game will award you the maximum jackpot of 5,000x your total stake if you achieve this. To aid you in this quest, the following gems will appear on the reels:

  • Red: Adds one additional spin to your lives counter.
  • Blue: Unlocks an additional row at the top of the reel set, giving you extra positions and therefore increased odds to hit new symbols on the next spin.
  • Purple: Increases the multiplier applied to your winnings at the end of the feature. The available multipliers are 2x, 5x, and 10x.
  • Green: Doubles the value of all bonus symbols currently visible on the screen.

You need to collect three of each coloured gem to activate their corresponding feature and can keep track of your progress in doing so by looking at the four meters displayed at the top of the screen.

Reel Crown Slot Review Final Thoughts

I had a lot more fun playing this slot than I was initially expecting – it’s quite an exciting little game with just enough features to keep things fresh during an extended play session. The hold and win bonus round did, however, feel a bit too difficult to trigger for my liking, but every time I managed to reach it, my results made the wait more than worth it.
