Game Overview
I’ve had a bit of a fascination with undersea-themed slots ever since I first hit a monster win on Playtech’s Great Blue more than a decade ago. Unfortunately, I’ve never managed to get anywhere close to repeating that experience despite playing the game frequently during the years since, so I guess I now have to accept that it was almost certainly just a one-in-a-billion freak occurrence that hasn’t genuinely justified my love for the game ever since. I’m not going to let that spoil my excitement for AvatarUX’s new Popwins ReefPop online slot, though, a game that features up to 294,912 payways along with a 95.99% RTP and a 10,000x stake maximum jackpot.
As far as Popwins games go, this one has fewer features than most. I guess the argument here would be, just how many extra features do you need in a game that starts with 8,192 payways, and has reels that can grow so large that this rises to a frankly unbelievable 294,912? The free spin bonus round goes a long way towards making up for the lack of base game features, too, as it’s an ascending multiplier-based bonus that boasts theoretically ‘unlimited’ free spins. The reels can grow even larger during the bonus round – up to eight rows each – and, unlike during the base game, they do not reset back to their original size in between each round.
If you haven’t tried any of AvatarUX’s Popwins slots yet, you’ve truly been missing out! This slot looks to be as good a place to start as any, so why not try our free demo slot of Popwins ReefPop? It’s available to play below:
Reefpop Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
It seems that AvatarUX is stepping up their production of these Popwins slots off the back of the excellent reviews that previous titles have been receiving, and who can blame them? We’ve just been checking out another new Popwins game earlier this week – Looneypop – and the review should be available in our library by the time you read this. If not, I’d recommend trying HipHopPop, HelioPOPolis, and Kokeshi Pop – three excellent games that all use the same extending reels mechanic featured in Reef Pop. Visually, I’m not sure I like this one as much as the previous Popwins slots; the underwater theme doesn’t seem especially coherent to me, but perhaps this is just a matter of personal preference.
When it comes to the payouts, however, it’s much easier to remain objective! There’s just a single ‘super high’ paying symbol available – a shark – and this will award 3x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. As for the regular ‘high pays’, there are three… “fish-like” creatures, but I’m not sure how to describe them, so I’ll refer to them as the purple, orange, and reed symbols! This shouldn’t pose too much of a problem, as all three share equal returns of 1.5x the total bet for a complete payway. Next, three more strange fish-like creatures appear in the medium pays category, once again all sharing identical payouts of 1x the bet for all six symbols. Finally, three low-paying royal symbols complete the paytable with matching returns of 0.6x each for a six of a kind winning combination.
The range of available bets is a little wider than the last couple of Popwins games, which I suspect may be related to the fact that this machine offers a lower jackpot. Don’t get the wrong idea there though – this game is still capable of paying a very respectable 10,000x the total bet, and the minimum/maximum wagers are €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively.
Base Game & Modifiers
Immediately after opening Popwins ReefPop, the base game reel set will consist of six columns of four rows each. This would typically result in a total of 4,096 payways, but AvatarUX has chosen to make winning combinations pay in both directions, which doubles the pay way count to 8,192. Many more pay ways are waiting to be unlocked using the Popwins mechanic, so let’s talk about that next:
Popwins
Whenever a winning combination forms on the reels of ReefPop, the included symbols will ‘pop’, and each one will then be replaced by two new symbols. To accommodate these additional symbols, the reels where the winning combination occurred will extend vertically with extra rows. During the base game, each reel can reach a maximum height of six rows each; during the free spins bonus round, this limit is increased to eight rows per reel.
Reefpop Slot Bonus Features
AvatarUX promises ‘Unlimited Free Spins’ in Reel Pop, which is, predictably, a little bit of an exaggeration! Before we get to that though, let’s talk about actually triggering the free spins in the first place, as there are no scatter symbols on this game’s reels. Instead, you’ll need to unlock all six possible reel positions during a single base game spin. If that sounds like too much hard work, you could use the bonus buy facility instead!
Unlimited Free Spins
At the beginning of each bonus round, the free spin multiplier will be reset to 1x. On each subsequent spin where a win occurs, the free spin multiplier will increase by 1x, with no upper limit. If you manage to fully unlock all eight possible symbol positions on every reel during the bonus round, the multiplier increases and will double to 2x per spin.
So where does the ‘unlimited’ part come in? Well, this feature is something of a hybrid between a typical free spin bonus round and the three-spin type feature that has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Each bonus round starts with three spins on your remaining counter, and every time you hit a winning combination; this counter will be reset back to three. This means that you only have to go three dead spins in a row to terminate your ‘unlimited’ free spin bonus round, and I probably don’t need to tell you that this is a pretty common occurrence.
On a brighter note, the bonus round begins with six reels of six rows each – that’s more than 46,000 payways – and they do pay in both directions, too, so it is possible to get lucky and play a large number of spins during this bonus round. Nevertheless, I still feel that ‘unlimited free spins’ is a real stretch here – just as it is in every other online slot that makes such a claim.
Bonus Buy Feature
The bonus buy menu offers two choices; you can opt to pay 100x the normal price per spin to trigger the bonus round in the normal way or risk a massive 400x in return for an extended reel set with 93,312 pay ways active right from the start.
I’ll leave it up to you to decide if the latter option is worth it, but it’s also worth mentioning that you can choose to pay the regular fee of 100x and then gamble for the additional payways instead if you wish. You’d only need to win the gamble once out of four to make this a profitable strategy!
Reefpop Slot Review Final Thoughts
This certainly isn’t my favourite of the AvatarUX Popwins slots, but it’s a solid addition to the franchise that will certainly entertain fans of high-variance slots for some time. The top jackpot of 10,000x isn’t disappointing by any means, but it is low compared to other Popwins games, and that alone may be enough to convince some players to spend their money elsewhere.
