Slot Overview

Red Rascal is a new Hacksaw Gaming release that’s designed around a 5×5 grid layout. Like most recent Hacksaw releases, there are 19 fixed paylines, and you can look forward to sticky Rascal symbols, a pendulum-based respin feature, three free spins bonuses, and a solid maximum win potential of 15,000x. It’s a sinister carnival-themed game built around symbol collection mechanics, but is it any good? Let’s find out.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Red Rascal is played on a 5×5 grid with 19 fixed paylines, a fairly familiar setup for Hacksaw Gaming these days. The game boasts an RTP of 96.34%, and you can bet from €0.10 to €50 per spin.

During the base game, when 3 or more Rascal symbols land together, they stick in place and trigger Rascal Respins. From there, the goal is to land more Rascal symbols and keep going for as long as possible, and if you land enough symbols adjacent to one another, they transform into colossal blocks, too. Now, when the Rascal Respins finish, you’ll see the pendulum stop on one of two outcomes: Coon Mode or Wild Mode. In Coin Mode, all stuck Rascals turn into instant cash prizes and colossal coins. In Wild Mode, they become wilds and colossal wilds, followed by one extra spin.

There are three different free spins features. Landing 3 scatters triggers Ready to Riot, awarding 8 free spins and improving the chance of Rascal symbols landing naturally. Landing 4 scatters triggers After Dark, which starts with 10 free spins, and here, any Rascal symbols that land without reaching the 3-symbol trigger are saved in a Popcorn Bucket for later. On the final spin of this bonus, all stored Rascals are thrown back onto the grid at once.

There’s also a super bonus, triggered by landing 5 scatters in view. Doing so awards you with 10 free games, and here, you’re guaranteed at least 4 Rascal symbols on every spin.

Bonus Buy

Red Rascal includes a varied set of optional feature buys/spins. For 3x, for example, you can play BonusHunt FeatureSpins that increase the chance of landing a bonus round naturally, while for 100x, you can buy Fiery FeatureSpins which guarantee at least 3 Rascal symbols per spin. You can also buy directly into the Ready to Riot and After Dark bonuses for 100x and 200x, respectively.

Theme & Design

Red Rascal is designed around somewhat of a dark funhouse theme, and you’ll see the reels set inside a sinister-looking carnival tent, with a creepy-looking performer on the left-hand side of the screen.

It’s actually one of the better-looking Hacksaw Gaming releases, we’d say, and they’ve done quite a good job of making it look creepy and clown-like. Still, the reels themselves have that definite “Hacksaw look”, so if that’s something you’re trying to avoid, you may not like what you see here.

Visually, it’s hard to compare to, but we’d say it sits somewhere between Wanted Dead or a Wild and Hand of Anubis in terms of intensity at least.

Pros

  • Unique pendulum mechanic
  • Win up to 15,000x your bet
  • After Dark Bonus is great, and quite affordable at 200x

Cons

  • 19 payline setup is... boring
  • High volatility means the base game can be brutal
  • FeatureSpins/Bonus Buy options unavailable in some regions and markets

Final Thoughts

Red Rascal looks like one of those slots that knows exactly what kind of player it wants, and it’s also going to appeal to fans of regular Hacksaw slots, in our opinion. The base game structure is actually pretty simple, but we do like how sticky Rascals, colossal symbols, and the pendulum mechanic all combine to produce something fast-paced and exciting, and this is genuinely a bit different from a lot of Hacksaw’s recent games.

In volatility terms, this is clearly on the aggressive side, but it doesn’t try to pretend otherwise, and that’s entirely expected from a game with a maximum win potential of 15,000x.

Yes, it’s a pain that you can’t buy into the super bonus directly, but you can buy After Dark free spins for 200x, and that’s pretty affordable, we feel, given how good they can be. So, yes, this is one of the rare Hacksaw Gaming releases that we actually quite like, and we may well end up giving this a spin for ourselves!
