Slot Overview

Casino game provider Yggdrasil Gaming has finally released a sequel to Raptor DoubleMax: Raptor 2. This high-volatility follow-up is, of course, once again built around the studio’s DoubleMax mechanic, where the win multiplier doubles after every consecutive cascade. This sequel, however, offers much more than the original, including an expanding grid, free spins, and 3 feature buys, albeit a lower maximum win potential of 9,494x. Is it any good? Let’s find out.

Theme & Design

The original Raptor DoubleMax quickly became one of Yggdrasil Gaming’s most successful releases in history, and the game was set deep in the depths of a prehistoric jungle. Raptor 2 DoubleMax keeps the same general setting, but graphically, it’s been enhanced a lot.

The game grid now sits deep within a mysterious, purple-coloured backdrop complete with trees, fossils, and a somewhat sinister vibe; it feels like there are dinosaurs waiting to pounce on you as soon as you let your guard down!

It’s a good-looking game, and it’s definitely more theme-specific than other dinosaur releases like Dinopolis or Dinosaur Park.

Raptor 2 DoubleMax Gameplay & Bonus Features

Raptor 2 DoubleMax’s gameplay begins on a five-reel, three-row layout with 243-ways-to-win, just like the original. However, during the free spins bonus, the reels can expand up to 5×7 with up to 16,807 ways-to-win, unlocking, of course, significantly more win potential. You can bet between €0.10 and €10 per spin. The game offers an exceptionally high RTP of 97%, although operators can choose lower configurations, too.

Raptor 2 DoubleMax uses an avalanche system, so when you hit a winning combo, all winning symbols are removed. A wild is then added to one of the winning positions. New symbols then drop down, just like in the original. Each consecutive avalanche win in the same round doubles the DoubleMax multiplier, which starts at 1x. In the base game, the multiplier then resets between spins; in the free spins bonus, it does NOT reset between spins.

The free spins are triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the scatter symbols anywhere in view. Landing 3 scatters awards 5 free spins on the standard 5×3 layout, 4 scatters awards 15 free spins on a 5×5 grid, and 5 scatters awards 15 free spins on the fully expanded 5×7 setup.

During the bonus, hitting 3 or more scatters again activates the Reel Expansion feature. If the grid is below 7 rows tall, +2 rows are added (up to the 5×7 maximum), and landing 5 scatters also adds +1 free spin. As mentioned earlier, the main attraction of the feature is the DoubleMax multiplier, which doesn’t reset between spins!

Bonus Buy

Raptor 2 DoubleMax includes three feature buy options. You can pay 80x, 240x, or 880x your stake to buy immediate entry to the free spins round with 3, 4, or 5 triggering scatters, respectively.

Pros

  • DoubleMax multiplier can reach up to 2,048x.
  • Expanding reels in the bonus; unlock up to a 5x7 grid with 16,807 ways-to-win.
  • Very high RTP of 97%.

Cons

  • Bizarrely, the maximum win potential of 9,493x is lower than the original.
  • Lower RTP configurations are available.
  • The free spins isn’t that exciting unless you manage to expand the grid.

Raptor 2 DoubleMax Slot Review Final Thoughts

Raptor 2 is a classic “bigger in some ways, smaller in others” sequel. On the plus side, we like how Yggdrasil Gaming has introduced the expanding reels mechanic and made it possible to increase the number of ways-to-win.

However, to us, it’s just POINTLESS if the game’s maximum win potential is lower than the original! Sure, 9,493x is still a great win to hit, if you manage it, but why make a sequel with extra bonuses and features, and then make the win limit lower than the original? It makes absolutely no sense, and it’s such a shame, as Raptor 2 DoubleMax had all the potential to be a superb game.

Sadly, because of this, we simply don’t feel Raptor 2 DoubleMax is going to do anywhere near as well as it could have done. Yes, it looks great, and yes, the additional bonus mechanics are great fun, but this lower maximum win potential is, for us, a deal-breaker.
