Game Overview
Norse mythology continues to reign supreme in both the movie and slot industry, and unless we’ve suddenly turned into a movie review site, it’s a release in the latter that I’ll be talking about today, and that is a new game from Slotmill called Ragnarok. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been into the Norse Gods scene, but I’m the type that couldn’t care less about a slot theme as long as the gameplay keeps me engaged. Generally, Slotmill slots achieve that, so I’m interested to see if this one follows suit. Let’s start with the core details. Ragnarok is a highly volatile 5×5 cluster pays slot with a 96.12% RTP and a 10,000x max win.
As for the bonus features and mechanics, Ragnarok offers plenty. As you’d expect from a cluster slot, there’s an avalanche reels mechanic, but in conjunction with that are wild symbols, 2×2 and 3×3 giant symbols, and a progressive win multiplier that doubles after every cascade. All of those features occur in both the base game and the free spins bonus, but during the latter, the win multiplier does not reset between spins. Finally, an Xtra Bet feature increases your chances of triggering the main bonus, as well as a handful of buy bonus options.
While I’ll fill you in on all the details of this slot and give you my opinion on how it plays, sometimes it’s best just to dive in and have a few spins for yourself. Below, you’ll find the Ragnarok slot demo so you can experience all the above features for free.
Ragnarok Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
While the Norse Gods theme is of little interest to me, I’ve played plenty of great titles that incorporate it. It’s difficult not to, considering how many Thor, Zeus, and Loki-themed slots are doing the rounds today. I might be showing my age, but Microgaming’s Thunderstruck demo on our site was one of the first games to enter my mind, and it’s still a relevant slot today despite being released in 2003. A more recent title I’ve enjoyed is Pragmatic Play’s Power of Thor Megaways, a slot with up to 117,649 ways to win, and like Ragnarok, it has a free spins bonus with a progressive win multiplier.
Before I break down all the features mentioned in the opening of this review, I think it’s best to open up the paytable to see what payouts are possible on Ragnarok. It is a cluster pays slot with an avalanche feature, so you shouldn’t expect too much in terms of single payouts; the potential comes from chain reaction wins and multipliers. The Fire-Eyed Character offers the best payout, with a 12.5x return for a 12+ cluster. We then have the Purple, Green, and Blue Characters, which pay up to 9x, 8x, and 7x, respectively, whilst the low pays are Two Birds worth a maximum of 6x, a Wolf offering 5x for a 12+ combo, and a Dragon worth up to 5x.
Slotmill has been sure to provide players with a large number of betting options on Ragnarok, with over 20 in total to choose from, ranging from a budget-friendly €0.20 a spin to a maximum of €60.
Ragnarok Slot Base Game & Modifiers
Ragnarok uses a cluster pays mechanic with cascading reels across a 5×5 grid format. You receive a payout whenever matching symbols land in clusters of five or more in any position on the reels. Winning combinations are paid before the symbols disappear so more can tumble into position. If new combos are created, the process repeats, which will continue until a cascade does not reveal a new win.
Wild Symbols
As part of the cascading reels feature, a wild symbol will appear in one of the vacant positions left behind from winning combinations, which, as you can imagine, increases the chances of another cluster being created. Wild symbols substitute for all other symbols apart from the bonus scatter.
Progressive Win Multiplier
As well as delivering wild symbols and allowing new regular symbols to drop into play, cascades double a progressive win multiplier. The first cluster win will increase the multiplier to 2x, the second doubles it to 4x, and so on, meaning the more cascades achieved, the bigger the potential.
Loki’s Trick
At the start of any spin, Loki can randomly increase the progressive win multiplier by a random number of steps.
Giant Symbols
Giant symbols can also appear randomly, either at the start of a new spin or at the end when no further winning combos are created. These can appear as 2×2 or 3×3-sized symbols that count as 4 or 9 symbols, respectively.
Xtra Bet
For 50% on top of your standard bet, the Xtra Bet feature, once activated, gives you three times the chance to trigger the free spins bonus.
Ragnarok Slot Bonus Features
The bonus round on Ragnarok is triggered when 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols appear on the reels of the base game, awarding 8, 10, and 12 free spins, respectively.
Free Spins
The free spins bonus plays out with all the same features as the base game spins, with the one significant exception now being that the progressive win multiplier will not reset between spins.
Fast Track Bonus Buy
Clicking into the Fast Track feature to the left of the reels gives you the following bonus buy options:
- Gamble Feature (200x your stake): You have a 50/50 chance to trigger the free spins bonus.
- Giant Symbol (5x your stake): Guarantees a 2×2 or 3×3 giant symbol on your spin.
- Loki’s Trick (25x your stake): Triggers the Loki’s Trick feature, which increases the win multiplier by a random number of levels.
- 3 Scatter Free Spins Bonus (100x your stake): Triggers 8 free spins on the next spin.
- 5 Scatter Free Spins Bonus (400x your stake): Triggers 12 free spins on the next spin.
Pros
- Progressive multipliers, cascades, wild symbol generations and giant symbols - what more could you ask for?
Cons
- Another Norse God-themed slot, as if we needed one.
Ragnarok Slot Review Final Thoughts
I’ve been a fan of what Slotmill has been producing for some time now, and Ragnarok is another release that, in my opinion, will go down well with many of you. I like slots that keep me interested from the very first spin rather than having to endure a mundane base game until you finally trigger a bonus. If you’re into cluster pays slots, I highly recommend you give this one a try.
