Slot Overview
Power Pops is a sweet-inspired scatter-pays slot from Backseat Gaming, built around a 6×5 tumbling grid. You’ll find persistent reel multipliers, unique Lollipop Multipliers, two free spins modes, several FeatureSpins options, and a mammoth maximum win potential of 30,000x. Is the game any good? Let’s find out!
Theme & Design
Power Pops takes place in a pastel-coloured sweet/candy world, with gummy bears, sweets, and star-shaped jellies dropping onto a semi-transparent grid. The style is actually quite cute but not overly childish, and this is a delicate line that providers have to get right in today’s online gambling world, especially with many of the new regulations aimed at preventing “child-like” imagery in games.
Visually, it’s pretty impressively designed, and in the backdrop you’ll see a kind of fantasy world, with snowy mountains and lollipop trees! There’s a definite Sugar Rush vibe here, but when you see how the game’s actual mechanics work, you may also see similarities to a Hacksaw Gaming slot called RIP City.

Power Pops Gameplay & Bonus Features
Power Pops is played on a 6-reel, 5-row scatter-pays grid, where wins form by landing eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the board. You can bet between €0.20 and €100 per spin, and the game’s RTP defaults to 96.31%, although, as is the case with most Backseat Gaming slots, lower RTP configurations exist too.
Every winning cluster triggers a tumble, removing winning symbols and dropping new ones into place until no further wins occur. This happens in both the base game and the bonus round. Now, the game’s core mechanic revolves around Lollipop symbols, which can land on any reel. When they do, they reveal a multiplier. In the base game, however, a Lollipop only activates if the tumble contains at least one win on its reel. In bonus rounds, Lollipops always activate on landing.
Each Lollipop adds its revealed multiplier, which is taken from one of four fixed multiplier pools, to the reel multiplier beneath it. As long as a winning cluster includes at least one symbol on a boosted reel, that reel’s multiplier is applied to the win. If more than one reel has multipliers, and they all form part of the same win, the multipliers values are added together.
Power Pops also includes two bonus features: Sugar Pop Free Spins and Lollipop Blast Free Spins. Landing three Bonus scatter symbols triggers the Sugar Pop bonus, and you’re then awarded 10 free spins. During the bonus round, the base game mechanics are followed, but you have an increased chance of landing Lollipop symbols and reel multipliers don’t reset between spins.
If you manage to land 4 Bonus symbols in the base game you’ll trigger the Lollipop Blast Bonus, again, receiving 10 free spins. During this bonus, the Sugar Pop bonus mechanics are followed PLUS you’re guaranteed to land 1 initial Lollipop spin, which guarantees a Lollipop symbol landing on all reels.
Bonus Buy & FeatureSpins
Power Pops contains four different Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins options. BonusHunt FeatureSpins cost 2x and make it 3x more likely that you’ll trigger a bonus game, while Lollipop FeatureSpins cost 50x and guarantee landing 1 Lollipop symbol per spin.
You can also buy instant entry into the Sugar Pop and Lollipop Blast bonus rounds for 150x and 500x respectively.
Pros
- Massive 30,000x maximum win potential.
- 4 Bonus Buy/Feature Spins options available.
- Unique reel-based multiplier mechanic.
Cons
- Base game feels quite dead without lollipops.
- Lollipop Blast bonus is very expensive to buy at 500x.
- Lower RTP configurations of the game are available.
Power Pops Slot Review Final Thoughts
Power Pops is one of Backseat Gaming’s most ambitious titles yet, especially when it comes to the maximum win potential. At 30,000x, it’s capable of paying more than pretty much all Backseat Gaming (and even Hacksaw Gaming) slots do, although, of course, this increased max win comes with increased volatility.
Visually, Power Pops looks decent, and yes, it doesn’t reinvent the wheel with the theme, but it works and is easy on the eyes. Don’t be deceived by its simple looks, however. The game has a lot more going on inside than it looks, and we really like how the Lollipop system works. The way multipliers build on individual reels is pretty unique, and not something we see often on grid-based slots.
We also like the fact that these multipliers are persistent during the bonus rounds, and this is where you’ll start to unlock most of the game’s win potential! Of course, both Bonus Buy options are expensive, at 150x and 500x a pop, but Power Pops is a high variance game, and if that’s what you’re after - you’ll probably like what you find here!
