I’ve already mentioned that pirates appear to be coming back in a big way as far as online slot developers are concerned – this is the third such machine I have reviewed in the past couple of weeks, and of course, there are surely dozens more out there just waiting to get the demoslot treatment! Pragmatic Play’s latest attempt at a swashbuckling adventure comes in the form of their Pirate Golden Age slot game, a 20-pay line machine that boasts an attract 96.49% RTP. Sadly, the maximum win here is capped at just 3,000x your bet, so this isn’t a game that can offer you live-changing wins – if you are looking for an excellent game for chipping away at a wagering requirement, however, then this could well be your ideal choice!

As for the feature set, we have a skull and crossbones wild symbol (who wears a hat, interestingly enough!) that will pay you an additional cash prize when it forms part of a winning combination, alongside a regular bonus scatter that can also provide a win of up to 200x your current wager. Of course, the bonus scatters will also trigger a free spin round when three or more of them appear at once. No base game mods, I’m afraid, but the lack of any such twists never bothered me whilst I was testing and reviewing this title.

Pirate Golden Age Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Pirates then! What a theme! The so-called “Golden Age of Piracy” occurred between 1650 and the mid-1730s. In this era, maritime piracy was a significant issue for countries using designated shipping routes between the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, the Indian Ocean, North America, and West Africa. In the earlier years, the pirates were slightly less violent, provided they got what they came for; if you do a little research into the pirates who were alive during this time, you may be surprised to learn that, in many ways, they actually weren’t all that bad! For example, Black “Sam Bellamy” had the nickname “The Robin Hood of Pirates” and prided himself on his ideological justifications for committing piracy.

So, what is our paytable saying today then, m’hearties? Ah well, the captain, complete with his umbrella, made of a few feathers (wow, things were archaic back then, weren’t they?) Ahem, sorry, as I was saying, Captain? 75x your current stake for each full pay line of five-of-a-kind. Then we have the female pirate at 25x, the shipmate holding a knife (good plan, my friend, maybe you could stage a mutiny and get yourself a useless umbrella!) is worth 30x, the pirate will pay you 20x your bet for all five of his symbols. Completing the high-paying symbol line up we have an anchor at 12.5x and a bomb at 6.25x. Four royal symbols complete the high-paying section of the paytable, and as for the lower half… five royals, two of which pay 3x, and two that pay 1.5x for that magical five-of-a-kind combination. The wild is worth 75x, just like the highest-paying regular symbol. Finally, let’s not forget that secondary set of bonus symbols – these are worth 200x, 20x, or 2x whenever five, four, or three of them land anywhere on the screen, respectively.

The minimum bet of €0.10 is always included, especially for those trying to make their bankroll last as long as possible! At the other end of the scale, we have a maximum bet of €100.00, which is pretty insane, no doubt about that; however, if I ever was going to place bets of that size, this may be the game that I would choose. The volatility is such that my balance remained relatively static for much of the time when I was testing this game.

Base Game & Modifiers

Wow, the more I think about it, the surer I am that these two sections are going to be the shortest ones that I have ever written; I’ll give you three guesses to work out the size of the playfield… if you didn’t say 5×3, then please, get yourself to slots school or something like that… hey, if you find a slots school, let me know, I’ll go with you!

Okay then, so we have a 5×3 playfield; wins are awarded in the usual manner- three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left side of the screen. There are no base game mods to speak of; it really is just your typical slot machine with a free spins bonus and not a lot else. Pragmatic Play will have to do something impressive with their bonus round if they are going to rescue this from Club ’1999 …. Let’s find out if they can manage it!

Pirate Golden Age Slot Free Spins Feature

And now is the moment you’ve all been waiting for! The free spins bonus begins with seven spins added to your counter, and a new mystery symbol will be added to the reels before this mode starts.

In this mode, any mystery symbols that land in the middle of an otherwise winning combination will transform into the symbol you need to complete your otherwise broken pay line. Better yet, the coin will add a 1x multiplier to your current bonus – if you already have a multiplier, it will be increased to 2x, or 3x, and so forth.

Furthermore, coins are collected on the meter, which may display either above or to the left of the reel set, depending on the device in use. For every five mystery symbols collected, you will win either one, two, or three additional free spins, which will be added to your remaining counter.

Not a bad game – there are a few parts of it that I find slightly frustrating, but overall this is a nice effort from Pragmatic Play. If it weren’t for the low 3,000x winnings cap, I would be all over this as soon as it goes on general release.
