Game Overview

Piggy Riches Begins is Red Tiger Gaming’s next instalment in their (and NetEnt’s) iconic Piggy Riches series. Here, you’ll find a more straightforward progression-based Hold & Win mechanic compared to previous releases, but there are still other modifiers like expanding wilds, multipliers, and a maximum win potential of up to 21,285x. Is it any good? Let’s find out.

Theme & Design

Whether it’s NetEnt’s original Piggy Riches release or later sequels like Piggy Riches Megaways or Piggy Riches 3: Hog Heaven, this pig-themed range of games has always done pretty well, and the original still remains popular more than a decade after its initial release.

Visually, Piggy Riches Begins looks quite similar to its predecessors, and the reels sit in front of a bright yellow mansion complete with a swimming pool, luxury cars, and even a diving board that’s lined with gold!

Unlike previous releases, however, in Piggy Riches Begins you’ll see character portraits above the reels. These light up as you play through the game’s four levels, as we’ll see later in this review.

Piggy Riches Begins Gameplay & Bonus Features

Piggy Riches Begins runs on a five-reel, four-row layout, and the game uses a 1024-ways-to-win mechanic. You can play for stakes from €0.10 to €4, and the game offers a default RTP of 96.17%. Wins form by landing matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left.

Now, in Piggy Riches Begins, all wild symbols are tied to a unique growth mechanic, starting as 1×1 and gradually increasing to 1×4 as you advance through the game’s four levels. They appear on reels 2, 3, and 4, and when they land, they substitute for all regular symbols. The Collector symbol is the most important and appears only on reel 5; when fewer than six cash/prize scatters are on the grid, it instantly collects their values. Once six or more scatters land, the Hold & Respin bonus triggers first, after which the Collector gathers only cash symbols for the remainder of the round.

You’ll notice that cash symbols display random values, and these can reach up to 20,000x once you unlock Level 4! You can also land multiplier symbols on reel 5 that boost line wins.

Progression itself forms the backbone of the gameplay loop. Each time you trigger a Hold & Respin feature while below Level 4, you climb one level. Each level increases the size of wilds, expands the cash symbol ranges, and opens higher multiplier brackets. Once you reach Level 4, the game stays permanently unlocked, and it’s here that you’ll be able to win the jackpot prizes and land the game’s largest wild symbols.

To trigger the Hold & Respin bonus, you need to land six or more cash/prize scatter symbols anywhere in view. Once you do, all triggering symbols lock in place and you receive three respins. Each position becomes its own reel, spinning individually and landing either cash symbols, prize symbols, collectors, or blanks.

Each new non-blank symbol resets the respin counter to three. If you manage to land any of the Collector symbols, they collect all cash prizes on screen and then clear their spots.

Feature Buy

Piggy Riches Begins contains three bonus buy options. For 3x your bet, you can guarantee a multiplier on each spin; for 20x, you can guarantee a Collector symbol; and for 60x, you can instantly trigger the game’s main Hold & Respin Bonus.

Pros

  • Win up to 21,285x your bet.
  • Satisfying progression-based gameplay.
  • Collectors seem to land fairly often.

Cons

  • The base game doesn’t offer much.
  • Levelling up can feel quite slow.
  • The game’s maximum bet is low at just €4.

Piggy Riches Begins Slot Review Final Thoughts

Piggy Riches Begins is an OK addition to the series, and we know that software providers are almost forced, right now, to produce games with Hold & Win Respin bonuses: they’re proving to be insanely popular in the online gambling right now, but even many players are starting to get sick of them.

Sure, Piggy Riches Begins offers some nice touches, like the 21,285x maximum win potential, the expanding wilds, and progression-based gameplay, but we can’t help but feel it all feels quite flat.

For a series like Piggy Riches, which has been around for a long time, we really need to see variety and innovation with new titles. Piggy Riches Megaways did well, for example, because Red Tiger thought outside the box and introduced a unique expanding wilds AND multiplier mechanic, offering up some superb win potential.

Piggy Riches Begins, on the other hand, relies on dated mechanics we’ve seen a thousand times before. Plus, the progression-based system won’t suit all players, so, on the whole, we just don’t see how this release will do very well when it’s out. It looks fine, and it’s good that there’s a high max win limit, but this isn’t one for us, unfortunately.
