Game Overview

The internet’s favourite animal is amazingly resilient in my experience; no matter how many times the wider public decides they have had enough of cats, these amazing creatures transcend the normal rules of memeography and keep coming back – time and time again. In today’s cat-based adventure, we explore the latest online slot release by Kalamba, a 200,704 maximum Megaways game with a whole litter of cat-faced protagonists. Phat Cats Megaways offers a 96.22% RTP (increasing to 96.34% if the Bonus Buy facility is used) and promises a maximum win of “over 10,000x” the current bet. Sounds good to me, Kalamba!

As a Megaways game, the headline feature of Phat Cats is its insane reel set which can divide into more than two hundred thousand pay ways. The game also includes the familiar mystery symbols used by so many other Megaways slots, although they can occasionally transform into random cash prizes and regular paytable symbols in this game. So-called “upgrade” and “lock” symbol can further enhance the capabilities of those mystery symbols, but I suspect that the free spins bonus will be of far greater interest to most players. With that in mind, it’s nice to see that a bonus buy facility is available as well.

I hope you haven’t grown tired of Megaways slots already – it seems that these slots are almost as resilient as our feline friends mentioned earlier! The cats are here to stay, so you might as well try our free demo slot of Phat Cats Megaways – it’s available to play below:

We all love our pets, but those of us who own cats and dogs tend to be even more protective and defensive of our little walking poop-machines than owners of most other animals. I’m a cat owner myself, and I’d love a dog, but I wouldn’t feel fair if I got one when it would be restricted to my tiny high-rise flat for most of the day. Other people I know that own either cats or dogs, however, seem to have this completely irrational disdain for both the other animal and their owners – I’ve never really understood this, but it’s one of those weird stereotypes that the media loves to re-enforce on a regular basis. I’m probably getting off-track now, so let me say that slot developers appear to be on team cat! Search for dogs here at Demoslot, and sure, you’ll find a few games… search for cats; on the other hand… mayhem! Cats of the Caribbean, Big Cat Rescue Megaways, and even a person called Cat Wilde, who isn’t a cat; it’s madness, I tell you. Madness.

Hitting it big on Megaways slots requires you to hit a whole lot of matching symbols simultaneously – preferably with at least a few six-of-a-kind payways. The numbers on the paytable reflect this; our highest-paying yellow “godfather” cat is worth just 3x your bet for a full six-of-a-kind payway, whilst the red “gangster” cat drops to just 2x the bet for all six. The green female feline and the smartly dressed… “sherlock” cat are each worth 1x for a full pay way, whilst the blue… err, “Watson” cat is worth only 0.75x. They are not the best numbers, but they sure are better than the low paying symbols, which only pay 0.2x the bet for a full payway.

You can choose to bet as little as €0.20 per round, up to a maximum of €50.00 if you have the bankroll to back it up. It would have been nice if you had a little more choice over your bet size towards the higher end of the range, but almost every game I review seems to have that issue these days.

Base Game & Modifiers

Anybody that has experience playing a Megaways game will be right at home with Phat Cats Megaways. The game features six reels and an additional four-symbol reel that scrolls horizontally above reels two through five. That sounds like the standard Megaways setup, but one key difference is that the main reel area can divide into seven sections on every reel, increasing the maximum number of payways from 117,649 in the original Bonanza Megaways up to 200,704 in Phat Cats.

Mystery Symbols

The mystery symbols in Phat Cats work similarly to those in most other Megaways games. One advantage of the mystery symbols in this game is that they can transform into random cash prizes as well as regular paytable symbols. On the other hand, one disadvantage is that they cannot transform into the highest-paying symbols on the paytable.

I saw mystery symbols scrolling through prizes of up to 500x the bet whilst I was testing this game, but I never actually landed one that was worth more than 10x.

Mystery symbols appear as stacks of symbols and will lock into place after the current spin is completed. Any reel showing a stack of mystery symbols between spins will scroll down one position between each spin unless a lock symbol appears and fixes that reel in place.

Phat Cats Megaways Slot Bonus Features

The paytable does not make clear if there is any advantage to hitting more than three triggering scatter symbols, and in the end, I decided that it doesn’t matter how many you hit – the bonus round is just the same. This is a little bit disappointing, as a six-scatter trigger is obviously far less common than a three scatter one – there should be some reward for hitting these less frequent combinations!

Free Spins

In the bonus round in Phat Cats Megaways, you have a consistent multiplier that keeps on increasing between free spins, and this will continue as long as there is at least one mystery symbol on the reels. So, in essence, it is an unlimited multiplier.

Keep in mind that mystery symbols will remain in place in between spins and will scroll down one position at the beginning of the next spin, so as long as you can keep one visible somewhere, the free spins can go on for a very long time. I managed to get my multiplier up to more than 40x during testing this game and had reasonably good results in terms of payouts too, but on many occasions, I did find that I only got around five free spins before all of the mystery symbols disappeared… it’s just the luck of the draw, I guess!

Bonus Buy Feature

I’m slightly torn on this one – the price to purchase the bonus round of Phat Cats is a chunky 150x the normal spin price. That’s no problem if you end up with 20 or more free spins, but much less palatable when the bonus only results in five free spins or thereabouts. Overall, it’s tough to recommend using this facility when it can end up finishing with almost no returns – the free spins do drop reasonably frequently during the base game anyway, so I’d be reluctant to pay this much to go straight to the bonus round.

Phat Cats Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

Phat Cats certainly isn’t the best Megaways slot I have played this year – but it’s not a bad game by any means. If you’re a big fan of Razor Shark from Push Gaming, you’ll likely want to try a few spins on this game too. It might just be what you’d call puuuurfect. Don’t worry, I’ve got my coat, and I’m going. Enjoy the demo.
