Theme & Design

Penguin Royale is a really well-designed video slot, and that’s something that we’ve come to expect from NowNow Gaming. Some of their previous releases, like Westend Wild and Shadow Treasure, have proven that the small-time studio is capable of keeping up with the big boys, although their partnership with Hacksaw Gaming has, of course, helped.

Penguin Royale itself is set in a cold, arctic land, and you’ll see snow-covered mountains, trees, and crevices behind the reels. In the top right-hand corner of the screen you’ll see the penguin himself, who, in keeping with the “royale” theme, is wearing a crown!

Penguin Royale Gameplay & Bonus Features

Penguin Royale is played on a 5-reel, 4-row grid, and the slot uses a 1024-ways-to-win mechanic, so you don’t need to worry about paylines! The game also uses a cascading reels system, so winning symbols are removed, and new ones drop down to take their place. The game’s RTP is slightly above-average at 96.31%, and you can bet between €0.10 and €100 per spin.

One of the game’s core mechanics is the Break the Ice feature. Symbols can appear in either standard or Frozen form on reels 2, 3, and 4. When a Frozen symbol is part of a winning combination, it shatters but does not disappear. Instead, it transforms into a Wild symbol for the next cascade.

You will also notice, at the top of the reels, a Multiplier Meter. This starts at 1x at the beginning of each base game spin. With every cascade, a randomly selected multiplier is added to the awarding multiplier, increasing the total win potential as cascades continue. Multipliers are worth between 1x and 100x, and the Meter resets between spins.

The Blizzard Bonus is triggered when 3 or more Scatter symbols land. Three, four, or five Scatters award 10, 12, or 14 Free Spins respectively. During Free Spins, one reel from reels 2, 3, or 4 is randomly selected at the start of each spin to be completely filled with Frozen symbols. This guarantees Wild transformations during the following cascades. 

The Multiplier Meter works just like in the base game. You can also re-trigger the feature by landing 3+ Scatters. Doing so awards +10 spins, with any additional Scatters in view adding +2 spins.
