Slot Overview

Take a deep breath, as we’re set to travel down several fathoms as we explore the unknown in the Oxygen 3 slot from Elk Studios. This brightly coloured release from Elk features cascading reels, spot multipliers, free spins, and a huge maximum win of 25,000x the bet. Are you ready for a potentially high-paying underwater adventure? Then join us as we see what this game has to offer.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Oxygen 3 is a 5-reel, 7-row online slot operating on the cluster pays engine, which awards wins when 5 or more matching symbols connect adjacently within the playfield. Players can opt to spin the reels from a minimum of €0.20 a play up to a maximum of €100, whilst also enjoying an RTP of 96%, much higher than the 94% return to player often associated with Elk Studio releases.

Onto the features, and we’ll start with the cascading reels, which activate whenever a winning combo is formed, removing winning symbols from the grid and replacing them with new ones. These tumbling reels work hand in hand with the multiplier overlays, which first appear as bubbles when a win is formed over a reel position. However, if another win takes place over the same position in the same sequence of spins, it will turn into a 2x multiplier. Another win will see it increase to 4x and then continue to double with each win that occurs over the same spot.

During the gameplay, it’s also possible for the clam symbol to appear; that will trigger one of the following features:

  • The Squid: Starts a cyclic behaviour where it generates a wild on its current position and then moves to a new position.
  • The Pearl: Selects a random payout symbol which becomes sticky. Redrops then take place for more chances to land that symbol again and win big.
  • The Starfish: Starts a cycle where it rotates, removing symbols and increasing spot multipliers.

The main bonus of the slot is the free spins round, triggered when 3 scatters land in view, awarding 10 bonus drops. During the feature, spot multipliers will not reset between losing spins, and an oxygen meter is also in play. When this is filled up, it will empty upgrading multipliers within the playfield.

Bonus Buy/X-iter

As with all Elk slots, there are multiple enhanced bets you can place. These are:

  • Bonus Hunt: You are 3 times more likely to trigger a feature – Costs 2.5x the bet.
  • Mega Hunt: You are 6 times more likely to trigger a feature – Costs 6x the bet.
  • Clam Chowder: Guarantees 3 clam symbols will land in view – Costs 25x the bet.
  • Bonus Game: Standard feature – Costs 100x the bet.
  • Super Bonus: Trigger the super feature – Costs 250x the bet.

Theme & Design

Oxygen 3, like its predecessors, Oxygen 2 and Oxygen, takes you into the depths of the ocean, where you’ll be welcomed by colourful coral and some friendly-looking fish. Overall, it’s an improvement both design and quality wise compared to the releases that came before it, but it still doesn’t scream out “premium release” to me. Would you agree?

Pros

  • High max win of 25,000x.
  • An RTP of 96%, which is a big improvement on most Elk games.
  • Lots of features and modifiers to trigger.

Cons

  • I'm not sure the series needed a 3rd release.
  • There's often 1 spin that pays ok in the bonus, and the rest are awful.
  • Doesn't have the feel of a premium Elk release.

Final Thoughts

I've never really taken to the Oxygen series of slots by Elk, and Oxygen 3 hasn't done anything to change my opinion on that. Yes, it looks ok and has a high max win, and kudos to Elk for increasing the RTP up to 96%, when most of their older catalogue of titles is stuck on 94%. But, all that said, it just feels a bit old hat and nothing like a premium release we've seen from the studio in the past.
