Game Overview
We’ve had to wait a relatively long time for the fifth instalment of the Nitropolis slot series, about a year, in fact, and today I’m here to deliver news of Elk Studios’s Nitropolis 5 release and a review to boot! Is it more of the same? Are there some big new features and twists? Well, you probably have a few suspicions, but we’re about to find out. Fans will know these slots are packed with features and mechanics, so let’s just start with the simple stats, and that’s that this slot features 6-reels, potentially millions of ways to win, an RTP of 94%, and a max win of 50,000x bet.
The Nitro features such as reel expansions, Giant Symbols, Nitro Reels, and multipliers all return, as do the Nitro Boosts, which can add countless modifiers to the reels and any Nitro Reels symbols. Among those modifiers are symbol upgrades, expanding the grid to its full 6×8 configuration, pays both ways, re-spins, and more. Plus, the fifth instalment also has an additional bonus game, the Boss Battle, which could reward the slot’s max win of 50,000x. On top of that, the two free spin variations from previous titles return.
You’ll learn about each of those features in more detail shortly, but if you’re the impatient type, why not check them out for yourself? Simply click the play button on the Nitropolis 5 slot demo below!
Nitropolis 5 Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Like a popular television series, the Nitropolis slot range has even spawned some spin-offs. Whilst we’ve had to wait for this fifth instalment, we’ve been treated to the likes of Gritty Kitty, Rogue Rats, Dirty Dawgs, and Pug Thugs of Nitropolis to keep us entertained, with those four slots following the characters of the franchise whilst they’ve been in training for this ultimate battle. The question is? Has it been worth the wait?
Over to the paytable next, and due to the cascades, multipliers, modifiers, special symbols, and everything else on the reels, the Nitropolis series of slots have never had the most amazing single-symbol payouts. That is the case once again, as the paytable shows the Dawg is the best-paying with 3x the stake returned whenever six line up across consecutive reels. The Kitty, Pug, and Rat symbols come next, paying up to 1.5x, 1.25x, and 1x for their top symbol combinations. Then we have six in a row of any of the four clans’ logos returning 0.3x, while the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack symbols finalise the pays section offering a max payout of 0.25x.
Elk Studios has remained consistent with the staking ranges in the Nitropolis slot range, and once again, you can spin from between a minimum of €0.20 up to a maximum of €50.00 per press.
Nitropolis 5 Slot Base Game & Modifiers
If you’ve played any of the previous Nitropolis slots, you’ll know there’s going to be a lot to get through when it comes to the base game, bonus features, modifiers, and all the other hecticness going on across the reels. However, let’s begin with the core gameplay, which involves an initial 4,096 ways to win across a 6×4 grid matrix. All wins require at least three matching symbols across successive reels from left to right, or if the Pays Both Ways modifier is in play, from right to left as well.
As with the other slots in this series, those ways to win can increase massively thanks to the ways to win mechanic, expanding the reels up to 8 positions high, and Nitro Reels that can hold as many as a dozen additional symbols.
Regular Features
During the base game or free spins bonus, the following features and mechanics can come into play:
- Cascades and Symbol Expansions: All winning symbols are removed from the reels, and more symbols drop into place, providing the potential for additional wins on a spin.
- Nitro Reels: The regular Nitro Reels symbol is two positions in size but can contain 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 instances of the same regular-sized symbol. A larger Nitro Reels symbol can also land, occupying six positions in size and containing 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 instances of a 2×2 symbol.
- Giant Symbols: Regular symbols and wilds can appear on the reels in sizes of 1×1, 2×2, or 3×3. The latter two are classed as Giant symbols. Any 1×1 position beneath a Giant automatically becomes the same symbol type.
- Nitro Multipliers: These symbols resemble Nitro Reels but contain a single modifier of 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x, or 12x. The multiplier is applied to all wins resulting from the current spin, but the Nitro Multiplier symbol can also act as a blocker, reducing the number of winning combinations you can hit on a spin.
- NPD Holding Cell Feature: Triggered randomly on any spin, re-spin, or free spin, this feature delivers a re-spin if a randomly selected symbol matches one involved in a winning combo. Those symbols and any Nitro Multipliers remain sticky for the re-spin, which takes place on an expanded grid. Re-spins continue until no more instances of the chosen symbol land to improve the original winning combo.
Nitro Booster Modifiers
Returning for Nitropolis 5 is the Nitro Booster row that’s sat above the main grid. This three-position row could spin in any of the following modifiers before the reels come to a halt:
- Dirty Dawgs: A random number of high-value symbols are replaced by the slot’s highest-valued symbol.
- Rogue Rats: Adds a random number of Nitro Reels to the grid.
- Gritty Kitty: A random symbol is chosen to pay via scatter pays.
- Pug Thugs: Moves a random Nitro Reel into a winning position on the grid.
- Both Ways: Transform the reels into pays both ways, meaning winning combinations can form from the fifth reel as well as the first reel.
- Nitro Wilds: Any Nitro Reels below this symbol fill up with wild symbols.
- Nitro Match: Transforms Nitro Reels directly below into the same type as a symbol on its reel or in an adjacent position.
- Nitro upgrade: Increases the size of any Nitro Reels directly below.
- Maximum Rows: Increases the playing grid to the 6×8 maximum size.
- Re-Spin: Awards a re-spin where all special symbols remain sticky.
Nitropolis 5 Slot Bonus Features
One of the biggest differences compared to the previous slots in this series is the addition of a Boss Battle bonus. It becomes the second main bonus game on this slot after free spins.
Boss Battle Bonus
Achievable in the base game or free spins, this bonus triggers once all three positions on the Nitro Booster spin in Boss Battle Coins. You’re given 3 re-spins on a new 7×8 grid matrix that only reveals banks, coins, and Max Win symbols. Each time a coin symbol lands, you win its value before it disappears. The re-spins counter resets back to 3 after each coin lands. The bonus continues until there are no spins left or the Max Win lands to award the slots 50,000x the stake max win.
Free Spins Feature
Bonus scatter symbols appear on all 6 reels, and landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 will trigger 8, 12, 16, or 20 free spins. Any Nitro Reels that land during this bonus will remain sticky on the reels while winning spins increase a safety level by 1 from the starting level of 4 up to a maximum of 8. The reels will also increase by one row after each win, so there are more ways to win on the next.
If one of the triggering scatter symbols was a Super Scatter, you’ll receive an enhanced variation of the free spins bonus. Your spins will play on a maxed-out 6×8 grid, with pays both ways activated and an NPD Holding Cell feature guaranteed to trigger on every spin.
X-iter Bonus Buy
Those who can access the bonus buy menu can choose to play with the following features.
- Bonus Hunt: For 3x your current stake, you can spin with four times the chance of triggering the bonus game.
- Gang Warfare: You can spin with the Nitro Booster, which is full of features for 10x.
- BPD 4EVA: 25x gets you the Battle Boss bonus.
- Regular Free Spins: Costs 100x your current stake.
- Super Free Spins: This will set you back a whopping 500x.
Pros
- A new bonus game and the addition of the NPD Holding Cell feature.
- Packed with features from start to finish.
Cons
- A little disappointed the max win is still at 50,000x for this one - expected more for the fifth instalment.
Nitropolis 5 Slot Review Final Thoughts
Well, was it worth the wait, as Nitropolis 5 is arguably bigger and better than everything that's come before it? There are more modifiers and features, and now there’s an additional bonus game to aim for. So, my question remains, where do you rate this one in the series?
