Game Overview
Casino game provider Relax Gaming returns to the darker side of the slot world with Necromancer’s Gate, a pretty dark fantasy-themed game that offers symbol upgrades, multipliers, free spins, and wins of up to 10,000x! Is this occult-themed game any good? You can discover more in this comprehensive slot review.
Theme & Design
Relax Gaming has always done a good job of developing eerie, well-designed games, and Necromancer’s Gate feels like a “spiritual successor” to the studio’s darker titles. The reels sit inside a massive stone gate. In the background there are floating skulls, with a green, misty sky visible.
The Necromancer himself floats above the reels, holding a red staff, with two giant red arms creeping up behind him. Visually, the game looks great, although it’s not quite as detailed as we’d have perhaps expected.
However, if you’re a fan of darker slots like Book of Shadows or HEX, Necromancer’s Gate does a pretty solid job of tapping into that theme, and it renders well and plays smoothly, too.

Necromancer’s Gate Gameplay & Bonus Features
Necromancer’s Gate is built around a five-reel, four-row layout, and there are 20 fixed paylines in play at all times. The game can be played at stakes between €0.10 and €40 per spin, and it offers a default RTP of 96.10%.
There’s a lot going on in the game, and the first feature is the Mystery Respin bonus. At the start of any spin, there’s a chance that the Necromancer can trigger this bonus randomly, and when he does, 1-16 Cursed Skulls are added to the reels. To “unlock their secrets”, you need to land the Ghost Activator on reel 3. If it lands, the skulls all burst open, revealing either matching symbols from the paytable or the Coin Feature, which awards coins with prizes.
Next, there’s Chaos Spins, triggered by landing 3-5 scatter symbols anywhere in view during the base game. You then receive between 8 and 12 free spins, and these spins play out on a new 5×7 grid. During this feature, Mystery Skulls lock in place. Whenever one or more Ghoul Activators land in the middle, all Mystery Skull symbols are revealed. During this bonus round, there are no paylines, either, and a scatter pays win mechanic is used. You can also hit wild reels, with multipliers of up to 10x!
Another bonus is Necromancer’s Coin Toss, and these come from the Coin reveals. Each Coin is revealed one by one, revealing either a coin prize or a special feature, including:
- Monocle of Doom: Targets a coin on the screen and hits it 1-5 times, doubling its value each time.
- Soul Collector: Collects all coins in view before awarding a re-spin.
- Inferno Staff: Shoots out the value it lands with, up to 50x, applying this value to all other coins in view.
- Ghoul Tonic: When this lands, it targets a Ghoul Activator already on the reels. The Activator’s multiplier is boosted by an additional 1-9x.
Bonus Buy / Extra Bet
Necromancer’s Gate has two main bonus buy options. Chaos Spins can be purchased for 100x, while Super Chaos Spins, which offer a “greatly increased chance to hit a 1,000x Ghoul Multiplier combination”, cost 500x.
The game also has three upgrades. For 25% extra, you can double the chance of landing the Chaos Spins, for 1,000% extra, you can play on reels where only bonus symbols can land; and for 40x, you can play mystery spins.
Pros
- Unique combination of Mystery Skulls, activators, and coin features.
- Two different bonus rounds.
- Win up to 25,000x.
Cons
- Chaos Spins can feel a bit chaotic and drawn out.
- Bonus Buy option unavailable in some regions.
Necromancer's Gate Slot Review Final Thoughts
Necromancer’s Gate is a decent effort from Relax Gaming, even if it is quite complex to get to grips with at first. The game has a fairly strong atmosphere: a floating necromancer, giant red arms, cursed skulls, and a green sky set a sinister tone, even if the artwork isn’t quite as detailed as Relax’s most popular releases.
We also feel Relax Gaming has done a decent job with the multi-layered bonuses and features. Mystery Skulls, Activators, Coin Toss modifiers, and sticky reveals all come together to create a lot of action. We do really like the fact that the Chaos Spins are played on a different reel set that uses a scatter pays mechanic.
Still, it won’t be a game for everyone. Some features seem to trigger a bit too often, leading to small (or sometimes even zero) wins. The Super Chaos is very expensive at 500x. Still, Necromancer’s Gate is a creative and unique slot, and it’s definitely worth a spin if you’re into this type of game!
