Game Overview

I’ve always found the use of the term “Muertos” a little bit unusual when it comes to online slots – the direct English translation of the term is ”dead”, although I suspect there must be a little more nuance to it. After all, “Dead Multiplier Megaways” doesn’t exactly make me feel like I’m about to win big – how about you? As is often the case in Megaways, we have a maximum of 117,649 pay ways on the Pragmatic Play title Muertos Multiplier Megaways, the RTP is 96% (or 96.03% when using the bonus buy facility), and the maximum win is capped at 10,000x your bet.

Features then, it’s a rolling reels game like so many other Megaways slots, meaning you can win many times from a single paid spin; it’s a good job, too, as the wins would be very low otherwise! Wilds have multipliers of either 2x or 3x, and there is a free spins bonus round that can award up to 14 free spins. A gamble feature lets you try to win additional free spins – if you are willing to risk your bonus round, that is! Finally, a bonus buy facility is available if permitted in your jurisdiction.

Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

We’ve seen quite a few slots with “Muerto” in the name, as I mentioned in the first paragraph – the most notable of these is probably Play’N’Go’s “Grim Muerto”, which was a great game, but is getting a little long in the tooth now. We have a newer game – Book of Muertitos, which has to be the cheekiest copy of Book of Dead of the bunch, in my opinion. Go check out our review for a bit of a giggle! Other than that, there are also the Esqueleto Explosivo games by Thunderkick, and whilst they don’t contain Muerto in the title, they are undoubtedly based on the Spanish festival of the day of the dead.

You won’t be surprised to learn that the payouts in this game are nothing special, at least as far as what is listed on the paytable anyway. First, the Skull and Roses are worth 5x your bet for a full pay way of six-of-a-kind, then you have a Liquor Bottle at 3x for all six, a Dancing Cactus at 2x, and a Burrito at 1x. Wow, they really are taking the stereotypes a bit far with this one, aren’t they? A pile of Nachos and a Banjo are both worth 0.75x, and four lower-paying symbols are represented by the playing card suits, all of which are worth between 0.6x and 0.5x your bet for a full six-of-a-kind combination. The wilds and scatters have no special payouts, so you will need to hit that all-important multiplier bonus round if you want to win big in this game!

The betting range starts at €0.20 per spin and maxes out at €100.00, with plenty of intervals between the two extremes – Pragmatic Play has included their usual three control setup, meaning you can bet any amount you wish in between the upper and lower bounds.

Base Game & Modifiers

So, no surprises as far as the base game is concerned – it’s typical Megaways fare with six regular reels and a separate horizontal reel across the top of the screen. The first and sixth reel can divide into up to seven segments, whilst reels two through five divide into up to six segments, with the final one being made up by the additional horizontal row.

Wild Multipliers

The wild symbols have a random multiplier of 2x or 3x each time they land. These multipliers are applied to all pay ways that pass through them, and when more than one multiplier is part of a winning way, the multipliers are multiplied together.

There’s a neat twist, too; if a new wild drops in as part of a fresh cascade of symbols, the full total of the previous multipliers will then be multiplied by the new multiplier, allowing you to reach bigger total multipliers than would be possible normally.

Muertos Multiplier Megaways Slot Bonus Features

The primary bonus round is triggered by hitting three or more scatter symbols during the base game, and you can also win additional free spins by hitting further scatters whilst the feature is in play. The number of spins awarded by default is 5, 6, 7, or 8 for three, four, five, or six scatters, respectively.

Before your feature begins, you will be offered the chance to gamble your bonus for the opportunity to win additional free spins. The maximum number of spins you can gamble for is listed as 14 on the paytable; however, when I successfully gambled up to 14, the game still offered me the chance to gamble for a 15th free spin. Predictably, I lost that time! Your odds of winning additional free spins increase the more spins you already have in the bank, so gambling from five to six spins is much riskier than gambling from 13 to 14 spins, for example.

Free Spins Feature

During the bonus round, any wild symbols which land on the reels will be collected on a meter. Every time another wild lands, it will multiply the value currently shown on the meter. This is much more generous than the typical ascending multiplier bonus offered in many Megaways games, but keep in mind that you do need to actually hit some wilds for it to be effective!

There is no limit to the number of times you can retrigger the bonus round and no limit to how high the multiplier can reach either – this should mean that the 10,000x maximum win is easily achievable if you have a lucky bonus round. Expect to see plenty of huge hits on this game on YouTube in the coming weeks and months!

Bonus Buy

For a cost of 100x the regular bet, you can buy the bonus with a random number of triggering scatters. I saw three and four scatters land with roughly equal regularity, whilst five only appeared once, and I never saw a six-scatter bonus whilst testing this option. My winnings were great, though, so if this option is available to you, I would definitely use it!

Pros

  • Two bonus features to trigger.
  • Free spins seem to activate with relative frequency.

Cons

  • Below average RTP.
  • Low maximum win cap of 5,000x.

Muertos Multiplier Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

This is one of my favourite Megaways slots I have played in a while – the bonus round is really neat, and I hope more games will use this style of free spins feature in the future. Perhaps with a bigger maximum jackpot?
