Game Overview
Snowborn is one of the newest developers to join the ever-growing online casino industry, with just a handful of releases under their belt so far in conjunction with powerhouse Microgaming. The company has chosen the typically popular Norse Gods as the theme of this release, named Masters of Valhalla. The game uses 1,024 ways to win and has a maximum win per paid spin of 20,000x your bet. The RTP is casino-selectable according to promotional materials for the game, with a standard setting of 96% – it isn’t clear what adjustments can be made, but you can probably assume the numbers only go down from there.
There are over sixteen information pages in Masters of Valhalla, giving the impression that this game includes a whole slew of features and modifiers. In truth, there isn’t quite as much here as it first appears, but its still an action-packed online slot. The reason for the large number of pages is the mobile-centric design of the game, rather than the information-filled screens of many earlier online slots.
Fancy skipping the spiel and heading straight for the spins? Our free demo slot of Masters of Valhalla is available to play below on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
Masters Of Valhalla Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As we all most likely know by now, Valhalla translates to “Hall of the Fallen”, and the legends say that it is the place where heroes who are killed in battle will be received. The hall is said to be rules over by Odin and filled with unimaginable riches, which is almost certainly where the inspiration for many of these slots comes from. All the familiar characters are featured on the reels including Thor himself and his famous hammer.
As mentioned earlier, the paytable looks quite imposing with its endless stream of pages – I can’t help but feel the information would be easier to absorb if more of it were displayed on screen at one time. As far as the game’s payouts are concerned, the first page identifies the wild as the games highest-paying symbol with a return of 15x your stake for hitting five-of-a-kind. The wild is shown in four different colours, which is explained on the next page as being part of a “Wild God Respins” feature, although it does not make any difference to the cash payout. There are four “God” symbols, including Odin who pays 3x for five-of-a-kind, Freya at 2.4x, Thor at 2x, and Hel at 2x. The payouts don’t sound very godlike, but potential multipliers of up to 50x are available to boost your returns.
The stack of coins next to the spin button is used to select your stake for the next spin. There is a decent range of options available between the minimum bet of €0.10 and the maximum bet of €25.00, and I feel as if more than 99% of players will be happy with this upper limit.
Base Game & Modifiers
Most of your time playing Masters of Valhalla video slot will be spent looking at the regular 5×4 playfield. The game uses the popular “all ways win” payout mechanic, meaning there are 1,024 pay ways spanning this relatively small area. That explains the small numbers on the basic paytable, but how do you hit the big wins? Let’s find out:
Wild God Respins Feature
The paytable mentions collecting the various different coloured wild symbols for a chance to trigger the Wild God Re-spins feature but does not go into much more detail than that. After a short session playing the slot, all became clear – each time a wild symbol lands on the screen, it will be transferred to the chest in the bottom-left corner.
When you collect enough wilds of the same colour, you will trigger this feature with a focus on the god that relates to the colour of the triggering symbols. When the feature kicks in all wilds currently on screen will fix in place and up to 19 additional wilds will be added to the screen as well. Any god symbols currently in view will transform into the one God that relates to the colour of the triggering wild symbols.
The only downside to this feature is that it doesn’t trigger often enough! I only saw it twice during testing, so I can say with confidence that this is the rarest part of the game.
Berserk Bonus Feature
Each time you land a bonus symbol on reels one and three but fail to hit the last symbol on reel five, you will top up your “Berserk Booster” for the next bonus round. Should you manage to enable this feature, you will start your feature with four spins instead of three and the remaining counter will reset to four each time you land a new symbol as well.
Masters Of Valhalla Slot Free Spins Feature
Around half of the information pages in the paytable for Masters of Valhalla online slot are devoted to the Valhalla Bonus. This is triggered by hitting the bonus symbol on reels one, three, and five.
You begin the feature with three spins on your counter (or four if you have triggered the berserk booster feature), and this number will reset every time an additional symbol lands on screen. Should you manage to fill the entire screen during the bonus round, the game will reward you with an additional 500x your bet.
The big twist in the Valhalla Bonus are the Shield symbols, which return a multiple of your current stake. Wooden shields can have a multiplier of up to 9x, whilst the golden shields go all the way to 50x. Each of the gods can also land during the feature and will have a different effect on each of the shields that have already been locked in.
We’ve seen features like this in dozens of online slots before now, and there is nothing particularly special about this implementation apart from the supposed maximum win of 20,000x your stake. It’s always hard to say for sure from a short session testing and reviewing a game like this, but I can’t help but feel such a figure would be seriously difficult to obtain from this bonus round – even with the Berserk Booster.
Bonus Buy Feature
Purchasing the bonus feels like a bargain at just 50x your stake, but the option to add the Berserk Booster takes the price up to 100x – a typical cost when purchasing free spins in an online slot. This kind of suggests that the “Berserk” mode is the one to go for, and at 100x, it is a slightly tougher sell – though probably still worth it!
Masters Of Valhalla Slot Review Final Thoughts
I have mixed feelings about Masters of Valhalla – I can’t help but wonder if this is a game that simply requires more than a couple of hours of intensive play to really warm up to. As it stands, however, I struggled to get truly excited about the game. It might be more your thing, but it isn’t really mine.
