Game Overview

The Popwins series of online slots by AvatarUX has been on a roll just lately, with each release somehow managing to surpass the last – even when those predecessors have themselves been thoroughly impressive games! So, of course, this begs the question: could AvatarUX pull it off yet again with their latest creation: Popwins LooneyPop? First, let’s talk about the all-important vital statistics; the reel set starts off innocently enough with just 486 payways, but don’t be fooled! These reels can grow to outrageous heights, with a corresponding increase in pay ways of up to 118,098! Factor in the industry standard RTP of 96% and a maximum jackpot prize of 50,000x the total stake, and I’d say that LooneyPop makes a great first impression.

They do say that you should never judge a book by its cover, so let’s dig a little deeper! If you aren’t yet familiar with the Popwins mechanic mentioned in the title, this works by increasing the size of each reel whenever it reveals a winning combination. In the case of LooneyPop, the Popwins feature allows each of the five reels to grow to six symbols high during the base game or nine during the free spin bonus round. In addition, a special ‘zap reel’ is located above the main reel set, which can boost the payouts of each spin through multipliers, linked reels, and expanded symbols. During free spins, the zap reel is guaranteed to award three of these features on every round! If you particularly enjoy the free spin part of the game, you’ll no doubt be pleased to learn that AvatarUX has included a bonus buy menu with both standard and enhanced free spin options available.

Looneypop Slot Paytable

We’ve been impressed with most of AvatarUX’s recent output, and the Popwins games have arguably been the jewels in the developers’ crown of late. Games such as CritterPop, and HelioPOPolis have all scored highly in our reviews, so I was incredibly excited to be asked to review the latest slot in the series! I assume that the ‘Looneypop’ moniker is intended to relate to the Looney Toons cartoons that were all the rage back in the 1990s – the art style used on the symbols certainly looks familiar, although AvatarUX has wisely chosen not to ‘borrow’ characters such as Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, or Porky Pig for this release. Unfortunately, this does mean that LooneyPop is something of a missed opportunity – the characters that have been included do look good, though, and I’d rather have a higher RTP than a lower one just for the sake of a big-name license!

The highest-paying symbol on the paytable is, I believe, intended to represent Yosemite Sam – best known for his outrageous moustache and dual-wielding pistols! He’ll pay you 1.5x your bet for a full payline of five of a kind, just like the female character who I believe may be based on Jessica Rabbit! The other two high-paying symbols also share the same return of 1.5x the bet for all five symbols, one of whom is obviously based on Marvin the Martian, whilst the other is a mad scientist who I don’t quite recognise… have I got a poor memory? I really hope he isn’t a super well-known character! Three medium pays are all based around bombs of one type or another, and these all share equal returns of 1x the bet for a five of a kind combination. As for the lows, there are six royal symbols making up the bottom part of the paytable, all of which will pay you 0.6x your stake for a complete payway. Whilst these returns are certainly nothing to get excited about on their own, the large number of payways and the zap reel modifiers combine to make them much more than the sum of their parts.

As for the betting range, you can play for as little as €0.20 per spin if you wish, whilst the maximum bet is limited to €40.00. Admittedly, that’s a little low compared to other top-tier slots, but it should still be plenty for all but the richest of slot fanatics.

Base Game & Modifiers

Looneypop Slot Base Game

Immediately after loading Popwins LooneyPop, the reel set features five reels of three rows each. This would typically result in a total of 243 payways, but AvatarUX has opted to make this machine pay in both directions, doubling the payway count to 486. Three or more matching symbols starting from either side of the playfield will result in a win, and each win will activate the popwins feature, potentially allowing you to win several times from each paid spin.

Popwins

Whenever a winning symbol combination forms on the reels, the included symbols will ‘pop’, and two new symbols will appear in the place of every single symbol included in the initial win. The reels will extend vertically to accommodate these additional symbols, with a maximum of six rows per reel during the base game or nine during the bonus round.

Zap Reel Rewards

On top of the main reel set, a single additional reel is shown with three symbol positions. During the base game, one symbol is guaranteed to land on this reel, although you can get lucky and hit two or three symbols during some game rounds.

The available zap reel rewards include the following:

  • 2x or 3x Multipliers, which apply to all wins that occur during the current round.
  • Split symbols that can result in up to five individual matching symbols appearing in a single cell. When this occurs, the number of active pay ways will increase to accommodate the additional symbols.
  • Expanded winning symbols that will cover the entire reel where they first appeared.
  • Synchronised reels whereby two adjacent columns are guaranteed to land matching symbols, increasing your chances of hitting larger wins.

Additional zap reel rewards are available during the bonus round – see below for details.

Looneypop Slot Bonus Features

Looneypop Slot Free Spins Feature
LooneyPop slot free spins feature

Popwins LooneyPop does not use traditional scatter symbols to activate its bonus round. Instead, you’ll need to expand all five reels to their maximum height of six symbols each to be rewarded with six free spins. If you wish, you can opt to use the ‘Wacky Gamble Wheel’ before your free spins begin for the chance to start the feature with 12 free spins rather than the usual six.

Free Spins

The free spins feature begins with all five reels at their six-high configuration, just as when the feature was triggered. In this mode, the reels can be further extended up to a maximum height of nine rows each.

During free spins, the zap reel is guaranteed to land three symbols on every spin. These symbols are also more valuable than those available during the base game, as follows:

  • 2x, 3x, 5x, or 10x multipliers, of which several can land simultaneously. When this occurs, the product of all multipliers will be applied to your win for a theoretical maximum multiplier of 1,000x!
  • The split symbol feature can now divide each position into up to ten individual symbols rather than the five possible during the base game.
  • The synced reel feature can now link up to three reels together rather than the fixed two available in the base game.

Bonus Buy Feature

Don’t want to wait for the free spins to trigger naturally? No problem! A bonus buy facility is available for players in jurisdictions where regulatory requirements do not prohibit such features.

  • 6 Free Spins can be purchased for 125x the normal price per spin. You can still choose to use the gamble wheel after purchasing this feature for the chance to upgrade the bonus round to 12 spins.
  • 12 Free Spins can be purchased for 500x the normal price per spin. This option also comes with the additional benefit of all synced reel zap reel prizes guaranteed to link three reels together every time the feature occurs.

Looneypop Slot Review Final Thoughts

Popwins Looney Pop is undoubtedly a worthwhile addition to the Popwins series, but it isn’t quite everything I had hoped for. Perhaps I have just set my expectations too high at this point – the bonus round is fantastic, but with all the paytable combinations being limited to 1.5x the bet or less, I can’t help but struggle to get too excited about this game overall.
