Game Overview
You’d have to have been enjoying slots for a very long time if you were around when Play’n Go released Legion Gold in 2006 – 18 years in fact, and today, I’m reviewing the sequel to that slot, Legion Gold Unleashed. Is that the longest time between a slot and a sequel? Surely, it has to be up there, as sequels usually come out a year or two later at the most. Either way, before writing this review, I got excited to learn what might have changed from the original – so much has changed since those days, so I thought we might have a that has added to the best aspects of Legion Gold. Well, a quick look at the core specifications and a few spins quickly told me I thought wrong. Like the original slot, Legion Gold Unleashed has 5 reels, 3 rows, 25-fixed paylines, a similar RTP of 96.25%, and a slightly increased max win of 3,000x the stake.
As for the bonus features, there’s not much change here either, as both the main bonus games, the Mega Free Spins and Gold Respins bonus games, return, and while there are a few differences, nothing major sets them apart. The only exception is you can retrigger the Mega Free Spins, something that held back the original, in our opinion. Still, despite being a bit too similar, let’s dive into Legion Gold Unleashed and dissect what it offers.
Whether you’ve played the original and want to see what, if any, changes the sequel offers, or you’re new to both games and just want something new to enjoy, power up the Legion Gold Unleashed slot demo below. It’s free to play|!
Legion Gold Unleashed Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As you’d expect from a sequel, like the original, the theme used on the Legion Gold Unleashed slot is the Roman Empire, or more specifically, what went on in the Colosseum way back when. As you’ll know from numerous movies, it was used to host Gladiatorial contests between warriors and animals and regularly attracted crowds of over 65,000 people. I know the movies indicate this, but were we so bloodthirsty back in those days that people would pay to see people or animals potentially mauled to death? I’ve always struggled to get my head around this. Still, Ancient Rome remains a popular theme in the slot’s sphere, and some of the best examples you can try here on our portal are Red Tiger Gaming’s Athens Megaways and the Centurion Megaways demo from Inspired Gaming, as both titles earned good ratings here at Demoslot.
So, what can we expect from the paytable on Legion Gold Unleashed? Well, first of all, the high-paying regular symbols are different from the original – each represents a different beast the Gladiator would have to face in the Colosseum. Gone is the armour-clad horse and fierce-looking bulldog, and we now have crocodiles, tigers, elephants, and eagles. As for the payouts, the Elephant pays the best of the regular symbols with a 20x stake reward for a line of five. The Tiger brings in a maximum of 16x, the Crocodile pays up to 12x, and a 5-symbol combination of the Golden Eagle will deliver 8x. The playing card symbols are responsible for the low pays on the reels, and each of the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack will pay up to 2x the stake. As for the Wild symbol, this also pays out for any combinations, and it equals the Elephant with a max combo win of 20x.
The minimum/maximum bets supported on Legion Gold Unleashed have been set at €0.05 and €100.00, respectively, while there’s a good number of betting increments to choose from between those. So, regardless of your budget, you should find a suitable stake.
Legion Gold Unleashed Slot Base Game & Modifiers
There are no fancy reel mechanics on display in the Legion Gold Unleashed, just the traditional paylines set over a 5×3 reel formation. There are 25 fixed paylines, and wins are created when three or more matching symbols line up across one of them. All winning combinations must start from reel one and move along a payline across consecutive reels.
Legion Gold Unleashed Slot Bonus Features
The two main bonus games of the original, the Mega Free Spins and Gold Respins, have returned for Legion Gold Unleashed, although there are a few slight differences between them.
Gold Respins Bonus
The first returning bonus game is the Gold Respins bonus, which triggers once 6 or more Coin symbols holding values of between 1x and 1,000x land on the same spin. The standard reels are replaced by a new set that only contains coin and coin bag symbols and blanks. Each time one of the latter two lands on the reels, the respin counter resets back to three, and this continues until you fill all positions with symbols or run out of respins. The coin collector symbols collect all money values and reset the respins but do not lock in place like the regular coins. If you run out of respins, you receive the value of all collected coins on the reels, whilst oddly, if you fill all positions with coins, you win just 1,000x the stake rather than the 2,000x on the original slot.
Mega Free Spins Bonus
Next up is the Mega Free Spins Bonus, which, while similar to the bonus of the same name on the original slot, has one slight difference – three reels are no longer chosen randomly to merge and contain only 3×3-sized colossal symbols. Instead, a colossal symbol is guaranteed to land in a random position on each spin. This bonus triggers once three scatter symbols land on the first, third, and fifth reels during the base game, and once it does, you receive 5 Mega Free Spins. Another difference is that it is possible to re-trigger this variation of the bonus up to eight times, something that was not possible in the original. Furthermore, you can trigger the above respins feature during the free spins bonus, and when that happens, that bonus plays out before you return to finish off your free spins.
Pros
- Another top Play’n Go effort in terms of graphics and animations.
- Two bonus rounds to trigger.
Cons
- Just half the max win of the original.
Legion Gold Unleashed Slot Review Final Thoughts
I’m all for slot sequels, as often they’ll take the best from the previous release and add more to make the newer slot even better than the original. The problem is, I don’t get that feeling here. Legion Gold Unleashed is essentially the same, albeit with a few tweaks. In fact, aside from a slightly better max win of 3,000x compared to 2,000x and a few minor changes to the bonus games, the core slot is basically the same.
