Game Overview

Legacy of Undead Dragon Abyssways is the fourth entry in Play’n GO’s growing “Abyssways” series, which is a pretty unique series of games that combines dynamic reel expansions with collapsing grids. It looks solid and offers a maximum win potential of up to 20,000x, but is it worth playing? Let’s find out!

Theme & Design

Legacy of Undead Dragon Abyssways is set in a dark, volcanic valley where a dragon watches over molten treasure. It’s an impressively designed video slot, there’s no denying that, but it’s not the most original in the world, especially if you’re used to playing earlier instalments in the series.

The art style and music hit Play’n GO’s usual cinematic standard, though, but we can’t help but feel as though it doesn’t QUITE live up to the quality seen in earlier instalments like Scourge of Rome or 13th Trial Hercules.

The dragon animation above the reels is a nice touch, and we definitely don’t have any major complaints about the game’s presentation. It would have just been nice to see a tiny bit more to differentiate it from earlier instalments.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

Legacy of Undead Dragon Abyssways has a base game grid that begins at 6×4, and there are 738 connecting paylines. This grid can expand up to a 6×6 layout with as many as 1,456 paylines during re-spin and free spins features. You can wager between €0.10 and €100 per spin, and the default RTP is 96.2%, although, as is the case with all Play’n GO releases, Legacy of Undead Dragon Abyssways is available in multiple RTP settings.

Now, in the base game, you’ll find two mini features. Firstly, there’s Haunted Gold, where coin symbols can randomly awaken the dragon, awarding instant cash prizes between 3x and 25x. The second one is Dragon’s Wrath. On any non-winning spin, this feature can trigger randomly, and when it does, the grid expands to its full 6×6 layout while the dragon breathes Fire Wilds onto random positions.

Of course, the game’s main attraction is the core free spins feature, where the Abyssways mechanic comes alive. Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols anywhere in view awards between 6 and 12 free spins, and the bonus begins with symbols highlighted at the bottom. These then drop away after the spin, shrinking the grid, and a new row of symbols is added on top, essentially restoring the reel’s height up to 6×6.

During the free spins, Fire Wilds become sticky, locking in place for the duration of the bonus, but they do also slide down as rows are added. They also have multipliers that increase by +1 every spin.

Pros

  • High maximum win potential of up to 20,000x.
  • Well-designed medium volatility math model.
  • Solid animation and design.

Cons

  • Pretty generic compared to the previous three instalments in the series.
  • Surprisingly lower maximum win potential than previous Abyssways titles.
  • Wilds can “fall off” the grid

Legacy of Dragon Abyssways Slot Review Final Thoughts

Legacy of Undead Dragon Abyssways feels like a mechanically solid game, but we can’t help but feel that Play’n GO has been a little overly cautious with the creativity levels. Sure, the Abyssways system remains interesting, and the Fire Wild multipliers are quite unique, but the decision to move to a connected ways format, alongside the lower maximum win potential, makes it a little strange in our eyes.

Sure, it’s an entertaining game, and don’t get us wrong, a maximum win potential of 20,000x is still nigh. We just can’t help but feel it doesn’t quite live up to the quality set out in previous releases like Static Nightmare or 13th Trial Hercules.
