Slot Overview

Le Fisherman is a brand new Hacksaw Gaming release that is yet another spin-off in the iconic “Le” series of games. This 6×5 cluster pays game sees the return of the Golden Squares mechanic, adds a new “Buckets” collection twist, and boasts a maximum win potential of up to 15,000x. So, is it any good? Or is it yet another re-skin of a game we’ve seen reproduced a lot over the past two years. Find out in this detailed Le Fisherman slot review.

Theme & Design

Hacksaw Gaming has enjoyed mainstream success with its “Le” series of games. From the original Le Bandit to later spin-offs like Le Rapper, this franchise has become arguably the provider’s most popular, and it’s no surprise to see them pushing out new instalments, although we’d like it if they had offered a bit more variety in previous releases.

Le Fisherman takes you on an outdoorsy fishing trip, with Smokey the raccoon trading his bandit “swag” for a pair of yellow Wellington boots and a rod that he’s casting out into the water. The presentation, while not groundbreaking, does the job, and it has that classic “Hacksaw” vibe to it.

Le Fisherman Gameplay & Bonus Features

Le Fisherman runs on a 6-reel, 5-row setup using a cluster pays mechanic, so wins are formed by landing 8+ instances of a symbol anywhere in view. The game has a default RTP of 96.33%, and you can bet between €0.10 and €50 per spin.

Like all “Le” games, the core mechanic is the Golden Squares. When you land a winning cluster, the involved positions convert into Golden Squares and remain marked on the grid. In the base game, these squares reset between spins. In the bonus rounds, they stay until activated, or beyond, depending on which feature you trigger.

Now, to activate the squares, you’ll need to land a rainbow symbol, which then causes all marked positions to reveal coin wins, multipliers, or collectors. Le Fisherman also introduces a brand new mechanic: Buckets. These act as collectors, pulling in coin values and even other buckets within a defined area.

Standard buckets collect within a 3×3 zone, while global buckets collect everything on the screen. Le Fisherman also contains an Epic Rainbow mechanic. When this lands, all symbol positions on screen are automatically activated, for a full screen of wins/modifiers.

The game’s free spins bonus is triggered by landing 3+ scatter symbols in view, just like previous instalments. Landing 3 scatter symbols triggers the On Thin Ice bonus, which awards 10 free spins. During this feature, all Golden Squares stay highlighted until they’re activated by a Rainbow. Here, however, a brand new mechanic called the Big Catch Bar comes into play.

After a Rainbow symbol has activated, it will transform into another special symbol depending on which level the Bar is currently on. At Level 1, it turns into a green clover; at Level 2, it turns into a golden bucket; at Level 3, it turns into a gold leaf clover; and at Level 4, it turns into a gold clover symbol, and all future spins are also guaranteed to land a rainbow or epic rainbow.

Landing 4 scatter symbols triggers the Slippery When Wet feature, which also awards 10 free spins. During this feature, all Golden Squares stay marked even after they’re activated.

Le Fisherman also contains a hidden epic bonus, triggered by landing 5 scatter symbols; Smokey Under Water. In this bonus, the Big Catch Bar starts at Level 4 and remains there for the duration of the feature.

Bonus Buy & FeatureSpins

Le Fisherman contains five Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins options:

  • BonusHunt FeatureSpins: Costs 3x and makes each spin 5x more likely to trigger a bonus game.
  • Rainbow Trout FeatureSpins: Costs 50x and guarantees at least 1 win and a Rainbow or Epic Rainbow symbol to land.
  • Rainbow Epic Drop FeatureSpins: Costs 500x and each spin guarantees that an Epic Rainbow symbol lands + a win.
  • On Thin Ice Free Spins: Costs 60x to trigger the 3-scatter free spins bonus.
  • Slippery When Wet Free Spins: Costs 250x to trigger the 4-scatter free spins bonus.

Pros

  • Win up to 15,000x.
  • Nice addition of Buckets and Big Catch Bar.
  • 5 different Bonus Buy/FeatureSpins options.

Cons

  • Almost all the game’s win potential hinges on landing Rainbows.
  • The Rainbow Epic Drop FeatureSpins and Slippery When Wet Bonus Buy are both very expensive.
  • Some players will feel it’s too similar to previous “Le” releases.

Le Fisherman Slot Review Final Thoughts

Just a few hours before reviewing Le Fisherman, we were tasked with reviewing another “Le” game, Le Rapper. In that review, we criticised Hacksaw Gaming for not including enough “newness” in the game and said that the “Le” series were simply re-skins of the original Le Bandit.

Credit where credit is due; Le Fisherman is similar to the previous “Le” games, sure, but here, Hacksaw has actually added a number of new mechanics. We like how the game introduces Buckets, as this gives the bonus rounds more of a "collector" vibe, like that found in Relax Gaming’s Money Train slots, and the Big Catch Bar also adds another exciting element into the mix.

The medium variance maths model also means that the base game isn’t quite as brutal as other “Le” games, which is good, as it keeps your balance a bit safer while you’re waiting for those Rainbow activations, or bonus triggers.

Sure, for some, the game won’t be different enough to warrant playing, but for us, we think Hacksaw Gaming has done a pretty good job here, and if future “Le” releases contain equally as unique mechanics, we’ll be a lot more generous with our review scores!
