Game Overview

In the movies and mythology, we often see the most dangerous characters residing in less than desirable places, which are often covered in flames or home to scary-looking creatures, and if you’re particularly unlucky, active volcanoes. We don’t quite have the full house in today’s slot review, but there sure is plenty of fire, so strap in as we’re about to unwrap the Lava Balls slot from Pragmatic Play, a 5-reel game with 243 ways to win, a fun plinko-style bonus, and a maximum win of 4,800x.

Theme & Design

Lava Balls is set in the depths of a volcano, and although we have some characters present on the reels, there’s no backstory given by Pragmatic Play as to who they are, so we’re going to take a stab in the dark that the guy with the horned hat is the baddie, the woman is the damsel in distress, and we’re the good guys/gals ready to save the day and be rewarded with big wins. It sure does sound like a good movie plot, doesn’t it? Anyway, back to the design, and it might not be a Hollywood set, but it’s a game that’s been put together well, which, let’s be honest, you’d expect nothing less from a tier-one studio like Pragmatic Play.

It’s onto my legendary recommendations next, and I’m going to stick with the whole Plinko thing that Lava Balls has going on. That can only mean one thing, and that’s over to Print Studios, where you can try out their Pond of Plinko demo or, alternatively, the Pine of Plinko 2 slot.

Lava Balls Gameplay & Features

Pragmatic Play’s Lava Balls is a 5-reel, 3-row online slot game with 243 ways to win and a return to player percentage of 96.50%. The game features a good betting spread, although the minimum stake to play starts at €0.25 a spin, which could prove to be too rich for some low-rollers. At the other end of the spectrum, there will be no problems for those with cash on the hip, as the max stake reaches up to €250.

Let’s take gameplay next, and the wild symbol is the main talking point in the base game. If this forms part of a win, it will unlock the volcano plinko feature, where it drops down through the pegs before landing in one of the pots at the bottom, awarding you a monetary prize or access to the free spins bonus.

Speaking of which, the free spins can also be triggered via three scatters landing in the base game, awarding 12 free spins. During this round special symbols appear on reels 1 and 5, allowing you to collect more lava balls and free spins. At the end of the spins, all collected balls drop down the Plinko grid, with all winnings being added to your final bonus total.

Bonus Buy

Players who wish to skip the base game can access the free spins via the bonus buy option at the cost of 100x the current base bet.

Pros

  • The plinko feature can be triggered in the base game, too.
  • A fun end to the free spins bonus.
  • At its highest, the RTP is above the industry average.

Cons

  • Low max win of only 4,800x.
  • If you don't collect many lava balls in the free spins, the end to the bonus can be disappointing.
  • Not ideal for the low-rollers

Lava Balls Slot Review Final Thoughts

I liked the concept behind Pragmatic Play's Lava Balls but did feel the max win was a bit disappointing at 4,800x. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be grumbling if I were to win it, but I just thought the studio could have made it higher and increased the size of the pots a bit at the bottom of the reels.

Nevertheless, this is a fun slot to play, and even if you only take it our for a spin with a few bonus buys in our demo, I think you'll get some short term entertainment out of the game.
