There’s quite a lot going on, and one of the core mechanics revolves around the highlighted centre reel position, where special Scatters can land in the base game. When a Knight Scatter appears, it converts itself and all visible Knight symbols into Wilds. The Barbarian Scatter performs the same function for Barbarian symbols.

There’s also a Battle Scatter, which, when it lands, triggers an animated clash between two of the armies, randomly selecting a multiplier of between 2x and 100x. The winning side’s symbols, along with the Battle Scatter itself, turn into Wilds, with the multiplier value displayed applying to all wins for that spin.

Knights vs Barbarians’ Free Spins bonus is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 of the Scatter symbols anywhere in view. Doing so awards 10, 15, or 20 free games, respectively.
