Slot Overview

King of Spear is Pragmatic Play’s latest offering, and this Scatter Pays game is played on a 6×5 grid. Look out for Tumbling Reels, random Multipliers, a progressive level-up-based Free Spins feature, and a modest maximum win potential of 5,000x. Sticking closely to the studio’s proven formula, this looks like a “safe” release from Pragmatic, but is it any good? Let’s find out.

Theme & Design

King of Spear looks very familiar once you load the game; there’s an undeniable similarity to other Pragmatic Play multiplier-based games like Gates of Olympus and Starlight Archer 1000.

Still, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you’re a fan of these types of games. Visually, you’ll notice that the game carries a strong ancient-warrior theme, with stone arenas, banners, and a heroic spear-wielding king looking over the action. Visually, it’s clean and polished, with sharp symbol artwork and smooth animations during tumbles and multiplier drops.

So, yes, it looks good. Just don’t expect anything overly unique-looking or visually distinct from the many previous Pragmatic games like this!

King of Spear Gameplay & Bonus Features

King of Spear uses a 6-reel, 5-row scatter-pays system where wins are formed by landing eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid. There are no paylines, and all winning symbols are removed after a win, so new symbols can then drop down, potentially allowing for multiple wins in the same spin. You can bet between €0.20 and €100 per spin, and the game’s default RTP is 96.25%.

Now, in the base game and bonus round, random multiplier symbols can land anywhere in view, and these carry values between 2x and 100x. At the end of a tumble sequence, all multipliers on the grid are added together and applied to the total win from that sequence. The game’s sole bonus round, a Free Spins feature, is triggered by landing 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols, awarding 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively.

Now, during the bonus, a level-up system comes into play. At the start of the feature, you begin at Level 1, where multipliers are worth between 2x and 100x. Landing six multipliers during Level 1 spins upgrades the feature to Level 2, increasing the minimum multiplier to 8x. Upgrading to Level 3 introduces a 15x minimum, while reaching Level 4 guarantees a minimum multiplier value of 50x.

Bonus Buy & Ante Bet Options

King of Spear includes both Ante Bet and Buy Bonus options. The Ante Bet increases your stake by 25% and doubles the chance of you landing the Free Spins. There are also four Bonus Buy options:

  • Buy Level 1 Free Spins: Costs 100x and begins the Free Spins feature at Level 1.
  • Buy Level 2 Free Spins: Costs 200x and begins the Free Spins feature at Level 2.
  • Buy Level 3 Free Spins: Costs 400x and begins the Free Spins feature at Level 3.
  • Buy Level 4 Free Spins: Costs 500x and begins the Free Spins feature at Level 4.

Pros

  • Unique level-up-progression mechanic during the free spins.
  • Solid 96.25% RTP.
  • Guaranteed 50x multiplier at the highest bonus level.

Cons

  • Max win of 5,000x is quite low.
  • Very familiar mechanics with little innovation.
  • Expensive bonus buy cost considering the small max win prize.

King of Spear Slot Review Final Thoughts

King of Spear is a well-made game, but then, that’s to be expected from a studio like Pragmatic Play. Yes, it looks nice, and it’s smooth to play, and it will be instantly recognisable to fans of Pragmatic Play's scatter-pays slots. And, yes, we DO like the fact that they’ve done something slightly different with the level-up mechanic during the free spins, as this adds something new, at least.

However, the game plays it extremely safe, we feel. Outside of the bonus progression, there is virtually nothing here that hasn’t already been seen. Except, in King of Spear, everything feels underwhelming. The maximum multiplier you can hit is just 100x (compared to, say, 250x or 1,000x like other titles), and the maximum win potential is just 5,000x, which is very low in today’s market.

Add in the fact that the top bonus buy costs 500x, and it’s actually quite crazy to think you’re, at best, going to be able to 10x your Bonus Buy stake! Sure, King of Spear isn’t the worst release we’ve seen so far, but there’s virtually nothing new here, and we feel this is a game made for fans of the studio’s scatter-pays games who don’t care about max wins as much as the general mechanics of the game.
