Game Overview

I don’t know about you, but my first recollection of a joker would be from learning card games growing up; you know, there was a couple in a deck wasn’t there. It wasn’t until I was much older that I learned they were included back in the 1850s, specifically for a game called Euchre. Now that I’ve taught you something new, let me introduce you to another game they are included in, titled Joker Split from Relax Gaming. This isn’t a card game, of course, but it is instead a 6-reel cluster pays slot with an RTP of 96.10% and a maximum win of 20,000x bet.

Slots that operate on the cluster pays mechanic are typically littered with in-game mechanics, but that’s not the case here, and somewhat surprisingly, the cascading reels engine is missing from the slot. The “Big Sell”, or main hook, if you will, is the Splitting Wild Respins feature, activated when a Joker Wild is part of a winning combination. This will first jump out from the reels, duplicate itself, and then reappear for the free respin that follows. The more wins they are then involved in, the more you will see appear on the next respin. An enhanced version of this activates when three bonus scatters land in view, with a bonus buy option also available at the cost of 100x stake.

Are we in for a barrel of laughs and a hatful of big wins? Or will the joke firmly be on us? You know the drill folks, there’s just one way to find out, and that’s by playing our Joker Split demo slot that’s waiting for your royal approval below.

Whilst my earliest memories of jokers may be from a deck of cards, I can recall them being on several land-based fruit machines when I was growing up. There was certainly one called Super Jester I used to play with a £4.80 jackpot, but the best machines by far were the Jackpot Jesters on £2.40 or £3.00 jackpots, where they could give a secret hold after the top win, ah, the good old days. Obviously, the humble joker/jester has made its way into online slots on several occasions too, and if you’re interested in trying a few of these games out, head over to Pragmatic Play’s Racing Joker or Four Leaf Gamings Dream Drop Jackpot slot Dueling Jokers.

Over to the paytable we go on Joker Split, and we have the crown as the highest paying symbol worth 30x for clusters of 15 or more. Next, and finishing off the premium symbols section, we have the juggling balls, skittles, and dice, all sharing equal payouts of 20x the bet for combos of 15 or more. Relax has opted to use jewels instead of the industry standard royals for the low pays (probably one of the rare occasions they would be relevant), which are coloured red, green and blue, all sharing a value of 10x bet for wins of 15 or more.

A huge offering of stake sizes is available, with wagers starting from just €0.10 a spin and maxing out a regal worthy €50 a play. Hats off to Relax regarding the number of options within this range; if you want to play this game for real money, you can be the lowest of rollers or royalty itself, and there will be a bet size comparable to your balance.

Base Game & Modifiers

Joker Split Base Game

Cluster games tend to come with a hefty-sized reel set, and Joker Split sports one of 6×6 in size with a total of 36 positions for symbols to land in on every spin. Whilst some slots in this genre require 6 or 7 symbols to form a win, you’ll need just 5 to land anywhere within the grid on adjacent positions in this game. As I mentioned in the intro, cascading reels are not included in the slot, which does make the base game a little boring, but there is the Splitting Wild Respins that can be activated, so let’s find out more about what that is.

Splitting Wild Respins

Any Wild Jester that is part of a winning cluster will jump out of the reel, duplicate itself and give a respin. In a respin, the wilds from the previous spin will jump back in. If a wild symbol jumps to a position already containing a wild, their multipliers will be added together.

Joker Split Slot Bonus Features

Whilst the base game is active, if you can collect 3, 4, or 5 bonus symbols in one spin or series of respins, you will be awarded 5, 6, or 7 free spins to begin the bonus round with, respectively.

Free Spins Feature

During the free spins, any wild not part of a winning combo is stored outside the reels. On the first respin of every free spin, all stored wilds become regular wilds and jump back onto the reels.

Once the spins have ended, you are presented with the opportunity to buy an extra spin. The cost to buy this spin and be in with a chance of activating all of your stored wilds will be determined by how many you have saved and what their multiplier values are.

Bonus Buy

If the bonus buy button is active in your jurisdiction, you can instantly activate the free spins round at the cost of 100x the current bet.

Pros

  • A good-sized jackpot of 20,000x bet.

Cons

  • The game could have benefited from cascading reels, even if they were just present in the base game.
  • Buying just one extra spin can be incredibly expensive and feel very scripted when you have a good number of wilds stored with high multipliers.

Final Thoughts

Relax Gaming makes plenty of good slots, but Joker Split fell short of the mark for me. It didn't really grab my interest at any point, it took forever to trigger the feature organically, and from 20 bonus buys, I made a profit on two occasions. You might see better results than myself, but if I was relying on this particular joker to entertain royalty, I think I'd soon find myself in the stocks!
