Game Overview

Anybody that has ever spent time browsing the most popular and common memes on the web will tell you that cats are somehow way more funny than any other animal – that’s just an undeniable fact! With that in mind, it makes perfect sense that slot developers like to use these creatures as the focal point of their games. The latest entry in the long and respected line of cat-based slots comes courtesy of Red Tiger – titled ‘Here Kitty Kitty’, the scatter-paying grid slot utilises a huge 7×7 reel set and offers you the chance to win up to 2,135x your bet with a Return-to-Player percentage of 95.73%.

‘Our furry friends are up to something!’ states the game’s title screen, which is a massive understatement! Let’s start with the yarn ball meter, displayed along the top of the playfield – keep an eye on the numbers shown here, as every milestone reached will reward you with a new feature. These features include a ‘symbol swap’, a ‘destroy symbols’ mode, and ‘random wilds’, but the real highlight of the show is the ‘catmegeddon’, triggered when the yarn ball meter reaches its final stage. The Catmegeddon bonus will place a jumbo 2×2 symbol on the reels in a random position, but this can grow much larger under the right conditions – we’ll talk about this more later on! If you can’t contain yourself and need to see the Catmageddon immediately, you’re in luck – a bonus buy facility is included at the cost of 100x the total bet.

It’s time to call your feline friend and curl up on the sofa for some high-quality cat-based slotting! Unfortunately, I called mine an hour ago, but she’s still sitting staring at me from the other side of the room for some reason. Sigh. If you’re having more luck than me, then go ahead and fire up our free demo slot of Here Kitty Kitty; it’s available to play below.

There have been some fantastic cat-themed games released over the years, and I’d even go so far as to say that this style of game seems to bring out the best in many developers! Let’s look at a few examples – Kalamba’s Phat Cats Megaways was a great effort that scored 7.8 when we reviewed the game, whilst Snowborn’s Cats of the Caribbean did even better and received an 8.3 when I investigated the machine. Better yet, AvatarUX released their own cat-based slot that we rated at 8.6 – it was an excellent entry in their POPwins series titled Kitty POPpins, and remains one of my favourite releases from that developer to this day. In short, Red Tiger has plenty of competition on their hands with this one!

We’d better take a look at the paytable then, hadn’t we? Here Kitty Kitty includes four high-paying and four low-paying symbols; the high-paying group comprises four cute-looking cats, whilst the low-paying group includes yarn balls that have been fashioned into the four playing card suits. The ginger cat is the most valuable of the bunch and pays up to 300x the total bet for a 45+ symbol combination – that’s the highest number recognised by this machine and represents almost the entirety of the 49-position playfield. The white cat has a top prize of 100x the bet for 45 of its symbols, whilst the black fellow is worth up to 75x, and the pink docile-looking cat can fetch you up to 50x your total bet when 45+ of its symbols land on the screen. As for the playing card yarn ball-esque symbols, the prizes offered for those are ordered in the usual manner – spades, hearts, diamonds, then clubs, awarding 25x, 20x, 15x, or 10x the bet, respectively.

On to the betting range, the game offers minimum/maximum limits of €0.10 and €40.00 per spin, respectively, but once again, we are faced with some pretty tight arbitrary restrictions on exactly how much we can bet. If you are betting modestly, you’re unlikely to run into any problems, but those with deeper pockets may be frustrated by the huge gaps between permitted bet amounts.

Base Game & Modifiers

The 7×7 reel configuration used by Here Kitty Kitty has been featured in many previous games published by big developers. One example of this, which instantly springs to mind, is the Reactoonz games by Play’N’Go, as they coincidentally happen to feature a somewhat similar feature set. Yes, I’m sure that’s nothing more than happenstance!

However, this game does work a little differently, as rather than the cluster-pays mechanic used by Reactoonz, this machine awards prizes for hitting the required number of symbols wherever they might land on the playfield. This change has a massive effect on the number of symbols required to trigger a win, and you’ll need at least 12 matching symbols anywhere on the screen to bag a prize when playing this game.

Yarn Ball Meter

This is described as a ‘progressive feature’ by Red Tiger, referring to the four stages which can be reached on the meter. All winning combinations will help fill the meter, and the number of symbols that make up every win will be transferred to the yarn ball meter before they are removed from the playfield. Stage one requires 20 symbols to fill, increasing to 30, 40, and later 50 symbols as you progress to stage four.

After clearing the first, second and third stages, you will be awarded one of the following modifiers.

  • Swap Symbols: All symbols on the reels from a single random type are transformed into another randomly selected symbol.
  • Destroy Symbols: Random symbols on the reels are destroyed, making space for new symbols to drop in that could create a win.
  • Random Wilds: Several random symbols will be turned into wilds.

Finally, completing the final stage will activate a ‘Catmagaddon’ – see below for the full details on that one!

Here Kitty Kitty Slot Bonus Round

This game does not include a typical free spins feature or anything like that – this means that there are no bonus symbols either, but we do at least get a ‘Catmageddon’ feature activated when the yarn ball meter reaches its maximum capacity.

Catmageddon

After reaching stage four and filling the yarn ball meter for a final time, the game’s best feature will activate and begins with a giant 2×2 symbol being added to the reels; it also comes with a 2x multiplier. Next, all symbols that do not match the giant symbol will explode and disappear, allowing a new cascade to occur. This process will repeat, with the giant symbol growing in size if enough adjacent matching symbols land on the screen.

During these cascades, the giant symbol will also have its multiplier increased – a 3×3 symbol has a 3x multiplier, increasing to 4x for a 4×4 symbol, and so on. Filling the entire screen will result in a 7×7 symbol with a 7x multiplier, but this still does not guarantee you will win the 2,135x stake listed on the paytable, as that relies on hitting a few other payouts before you reach the full-screen stage.

Bonus Buy

I was expecting the Catmageddon feature to be relatively expensive to purchase directly, but surprisingly it’s offered at the cost of just 50x the current stake. This allowed me to test the feature many times whilst writing this review, and I’d estimate that I made a profit at least 2/3 of the time. I never received anything particularly impressive, but I was still left with the feeling that this was a bargain of a bonus buy facility.

Pros

  • Who doesn’t love cats? They’re so cute, as well as being the spirit animal of the internet!
  • Scatter-pay payout mechanic is easy to understand and makes for an exciting and fast-paced machine.
  • The yarn ball meter fills up fast, ensuring that your next feature is always just around the corner.

Cons

  • A maximum jackpot of only 2,135x isn’t especially impressive.
  • No free spins or other full-fat bonus round.

Final Thoughts

Grid slots make up a large percentage of my favourite games at the moment, so I’m always keen to check out a new game that utilises this format. Unfortunately, Here Kitty Kitty seems inferior to the machines I’m already familiar with in almost every way – this is a close call for Red Tiger and should have been something really special, yet somehow manages to miss the mark.
