Game Overview
After spotting this game on our latest to-do list, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d already reviewed the game at some point in the past. After searching my folders and finding nothing, I suddenly wondered – what on earth does the word ‘Tiki’ even mean, anyway? Even if I hadn’t looked at PG Soft’s Hawaiian Tiki before now, I was confident that I must have reviewed a similarly named machine from another developer. It turns out – drum roll please – that a Tiki is a wood or stone figure of a Polynesian supernatural power! At least, that’s what Miriam-Webster has to say on the matter anyway… the Oxford Dictionary reckons that it’s a ‘large wooden’ or ‘small greenstone’ image of a human figure. Definitely not a small wooden one though, do you understand? Contradictory definitions aside, the game features 3,600 payways, a 96.76% RTP, and a 2,500x bet jackpot.
Ah, I have to do it, those definitions! When the two biggest dictionary companies alternatively define something as being either a human figure or a Polynesian supernatural power, you have to wonder just how accurate the remainder of their catalogues might be – don’t you think? I seriously hope that Tiki is the exception and not the rule – on the plus side though, I’m probably the only person who will search the term during 2023! Trying to get back on point now, as reels three and four include special spreading wild symbols, which are extremely helpful with regard to winning on a large number of payways simultaneously. The main bonus round is a typical free spins affair, awarding a minimum of 12 up to a maximum of 18 free spins that can also be re-triggered. The spreading wilds become a tad more generous during the feature too – check the bonus round section below for details.
Do you agree with the Miriam-Webster definition of a Tiki? Or does Oxford have this one worked out? I’m starting to wonder if the pair of them might be trolling us to be honest. But at least you can always be certain that we’ll have a free demo slot – check out Hawaiian Tiki, available to play below!
Hawaiian Tiki Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
You may think that the word ‘Tiki’ is very much obscure, in which case you’ll likely be shocked to hear that several existing slot machines feature the word in their titles! Examples include Pragmatic Play’s Tropical Tiki – I’m guessing that will be the one responsible for my initial confusion in the opening paragraph – along with Silverback Gaming’s Tiki Bonanza. There are several more matches for the term in our review library, all of which look to be related to totem poles and similarly weird and wonderful things! Whilst all the games are relatively similar in terms of their visuals, the two games I included links to above look a little more impressive to my eyes – they have much larger feature sets, too. Perhaps the paytable could be where PG Soft has the edge?
From the top, the highest-paying symbols are all elements of totem poles with payouts that range up to a maximum of 80x for a full payway of six of the pink variety. The red and yellow carvings share equal returns of 50x the total bet for a six of a kind combination, whilst hitting six of the included fruit varieties will add 40x your stake to your bankroll. Finally, there are two more flower-themed symbols that also share payouts – 30x the bet this time – after this, we’re left with just the four playing card suits with a prize of 20x for a complete payway.
Before moving on to the base game, let’s give the developers of Hawaiian Tiki – PGSoft – a shout-out for their excellent wager selection mechanic! This time around, there are just three choices of coin size – €0.01, €0.10, and €0.50 – but you also have bet level options ranging between one and ten. Together, these settings provide excellent flexibility along with minimum/maximum betting limits of €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively.
Base Game & Modifiers
The name ‘Pocket Games Soft’ immediately gives us a clue about what to expect from this developer’s slot machines – if you like to play slots on your phone, then the design of these games will be perfect for you. However, those who enjoy playing on a desktop may be a little disappointed by the lack of any big-screen interface.
With that little disclaimer out of the way, Hawaiian Tiki utilises an unusual reel layout with three rows on reels one and six, four on reels two and five, and five on reels three and four. Multiply those numbers together, and you’ll get a total of 3,600 payways – a huge number, made all the better by the fact that all symbols appear stacked on the reels!
Expanding Wild Symbol
These symbols are dubbed ‘expanding’ wilds on the paytable, although the way they work is quite different to other games that feature expanding wilds, to my mind.
After any winning round that includes one or more wilds on reels three and four, the wild symbols will become locked in place, and an extra wild will be added in an adjacent position. Those wilds are then available to use as part of subsequent winning combinations during your next paid spin.
Unfortunately, this feature has a bit of a catch – when all five positions of either reel three or reel four become filled with wilds, the game will remove them all before the next spin! I can’t believe the game didn’t even award a single spin with the fully stacked wild symbols in play – talk about an anti-climax!
Hawaiian Tiki Slot Bonus Features
Many previous six-reel slots insist that you hit at least four bonus symbols to activate their features, but PG Soft has done us a solid here and allowed just three scatters to trigger the free spins of Hawaiian Tiki! A three-scatter trigger will get you 12 free spins, with two extra spins added for each additional symbol up to a maximum of 18.
Free Spins
In this mode, the expanding wilds feature discussed in the previous section becomes slightly more valuable as the sticky symbols it creates remain on the reels even if you fail to hit any wins during the current spin. Unfortunately, gathering a full stack of five wilds will still cause all of your accumulated wilds to be removed!
On the plus side, hitting just two scatters whilst the feature is active will add four more free spins to your remaining counter. You can also fully re-trigger the feature by hitting three or more scatters!
Pros
- The paytable is relatively generous for a 3,600 payway slot.
- Free spins are reasonably easy to trigger and seem to re-trigger fairly often as well.
- Spreading wilds and stacked symbols create a situation where you’ll rarely have an entirely dead spin!
Cons
- Small-ish jackpot, especially for this developer – a 2,500x bet is just too small in my eyes, but it is still better than some other slots out there.
- The bonus round would have benefitted from an extra feature or two – it plays just like the base game for the most part.
Final Thoughts
Who doesn’t like the idea of casting our regular daily grinds aside and slipping away to a Hawaiian island once in a while? I guess that’s what this slot is meant to inspire in us, but the limited feature set and average jackpot limit the game's appeal. Only for die-hard PG Soft fans, I’d say.
