Game Overview

Hammerstorm is a Thor-themed release from Pragmatic Play that’s designed around a collection-based mechanic. Familiar visuals and mechanics may not suit every player, but the 10,000x maximum win potential is appealing, so is the slot worth playing? That’s what we’ll answer in this detailed review.

Theme & Design

Hammerstorm is one of the most unusual-looking Pragmatic Play slots we’ve seen in a while, and that’s primarily down to the graphics and visuals. Pragmatic Play slots have a very familiar look and feel to them: if you’ve played enough of their games, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

Hammerstorm, on the other hand, does away with this, and we can’t quite put our finger on it, but the graphics and design wok but just look different compared to what we’re used to seeing – in a good way. The reels themselves are set atop a lush-looking Viking valley, where longhouses, rivers, and old Viking buildings can be seen! You’ll also see three modifiers about the reels, which we’ll cover later in this review.

Of course, Viking-themed video slots are nothing new, and there are tonnes of titles to choose from, so it’s always a high bar when a provider decides to release a new Thor-inspired slot. Power of Thor Megaways, for example, is another Pragmatic Play release that proved quite popular, and Odin’s Gamble is another notable title worth checking out.

Hammerstorm Gameplay & Bonus Features

Hammerstorm is played on a five-reel, three-row layout with 40 paylines, offering bets from €0.20 to €240 per spin. The RTP sits at 96.50%, though, as usual for Pragmatic, lower configurations also exist. You can also activate two Ante Bet options. The first costs 50x and guarantees a Thor symbol on each spin. The second costs 100x and guarantees at least 5 Lightning symbols land.

Now, in the base game, there are three types of Lightning symbols: Red, Green, and Purple. Red is linked to the Double Chest, Green is linked to the Expand Chest, and Purple is linked to the Spins Chest.

Whenever these symbols appear, they are collected into their respective chest. This collection may randomly trigger the Respins Feature, activating one, two, or all three modifiers. Lightning symbols also act as money symbols, carrying values from 0.5x to 10,000x.

If you land the special Thor symbol on reel 1 with at least one Lightning symbol, the re-spins round triggers, and you’ll then be taken to a new 5×5 game grid. You start with 5 respins, but the three modifiers and the shifting collection zone makes things quite interesting.

The 2×2 collection zone gathers all coin/lightning values landing inside it. The zone then moves to follow new lightning symbols as they land. Collected Lightning symbols fill a progression meter. Once you collect 5, the Zone expands to 3×3 and you receive +3 re-spins.

After collecting 4 more, the Zone expands to a 4×4 layout, and you get +2 re-spins. After collecting another 3, the Zone expands to a 5×5 size, and you get +1 re-spin. There are also the three modifiers. The Double introduces Cold Coins and collects twice. The Expand expands the grid up to 7×7, and the Spins awards +1 re-spin.

Pros

  • Win up to 10,000x.
  • Quite an interesting base game/feature Zone mechanic.
  • Two Ante Bet options available.

Cons

  • No bonus buy available.
  • Ante Bet options are very expensive.
  • Theme and mechanics all feel quite familiar.

Hammerstorm Slot Review Final Thoughts

Hammerstorm is the latest game to join the ever-growing collection of “three-pot” collector slots, and we’re seeing these a lot right now. While Hammerstorm offers a few unique wrists, like the moving collection zone and the expanding grid, it doesn’t feel unique to us, and while the game is well-designed and well-executed, we can’t help but feel it’s just something we’ve seen before in a different skin.

There’s no bonus buy, so if you don’t want to spin the base game naturally, your only options are the two Ante Bets, and these are massively expensive, considering they don’t guarantee a bonus, so proceed with caution if using them would be our advice.

Still, players who enjoy collector mechanics, moving zones, and multi-modifier respins may find Hammerstorm decent enough to play, and the 10,000x maximum win potential doesn’t hurt: just don’t expect anything overly unique, and you won’t be disappointed!

  1. This is a good and fun game, but please don’t make the thorn animation look like someone is being electrocuted 😫
